Unlox Changelog

What's new in Unlox 3.0.0.5

Aug 1, 2019
  • I’m really pleased to announce that v3 is finally here. v3 brings a few new features, a few old features, and a few fixes and tweaks.
  • It’s really important to note that v3 is not compatible with v2 due to the huge change in connection procedure, so please make sure you update BOTH apps asap. Unlox v3 is a free update for anyone who has v2.
  • v3 has been the work of about 6 months or so, thank you to everyone for your patience while I worked on this. Here’s what’s changed:
  • Fixes the missing name bug (finally!) which started in macOS Mojave.
  • Since I had to re-write the connection code to fix the bug above, Unlox now requires your device to be “trusted” to connect. This means you might see a system Bluetooth pairing prompt (with some numbers to confirm on your Mac and iOS device). This should fix the issues people were seeing with having to forget and re-add your device over and over.
  • Unlox for iOS can now control the volume level of your Mac.
  • Unlox for iOS can now start your Mac screensavers again.
  • Unlox for macOS can now connect to multiple iOS devices. The number is actually unlimited, but I recommend adding two devices. An iPhone and iPad is a nice combination.
  • AutoLock and AutoWake (previously called Proximity Wake) are now configured per-device, so you can turn it on or off for a particular device, or change the trigger to be further away for your iPad, for example.
  • Unlox for iOS is now more power-efficient, because it will only advertise itself when in the foreground. That doesn’t stop Unlox for macOS reconnecting to your iOS device while Unlox is in the background, it just means you can’t add a new device without bringing Unlox into the foreground, which is required for discovering the name of your device anyway!
  • Small tweaks to some of the alert buttons in the app. For example, instead of the unlock confirmation alert saying “okay”, it says “unlock”, so you know what confirming actually does.
  • Since your Mac can connect to multiple devices, confirmation alerts on each device are automatically dismissed if your Mac is unlocked either from another device, from Tap to Unlock or just entering your password manually. Same goes for admin password requests.
  • Unlox for macOS will now show the number of devices connected in the menu bar, and will also show “!!” if Bluetooth has been turned off or is in some other state other than “on”.
  • The above update made it easier to give much better VoiceOver support for the menu bar icon, which will now indicate how many devices are connected and whether Bluetooth is off etc.
  • Unlox for macOS’ “Unlox ready” lock screen notification now shows the number of connected devices.
  • Unlox for macOS has a fresher design for the setup flow when adding a device.
  • Unlox for macOS will now check if you’ve entered the right password before saving it, and will tell you if you made a mistake.
  • Fixes macOS sometimes showing a warning that Unlox needs to be updated to 64-bit architecture. Unlox was actually already 64-bit, but an embedded app Unlox uses to relaunch itself was still 32-bit. I’ve completely removed that embedded app now, Unlox can use alternative methods to relaunch itself.
  • Unlox for macOS will add itself to Login Items the first time you set up a device, so Unlox will automatically start when you log in. Previously this was broken and you would have to add Unlox to Login Items yourself.
  • Added local logging to Unlox for iOS to help me debug issues. If you experience strange behaviour, please forward on logs from both your Mac and iOS device. As always, logs will never leave your device unless you explicitly share them with me.

New in Unlox 2.0.1 (Mar 8, 2018)

  • Fixes an issue where Unlox would enter the incorrect password if you have multiple keyboard language inputs enabled. (This is the main reason for the 2.0.1 release)
  • Makes it clearer that you have to click your iOS device when it appears in the setup window.
  • Adds a progress indicator while setting up rather than an indefinite spinner.
  • Checks for updates on launch if you have automatic update checking enabled.
  • Fixes an issue where Unlox wouldn’t let you set up a second time. (This was especially bad for people who were part of the beta but moved over to the release version)
  • Fixes an issue where autolock would tell you it’s disabled because you’re not on battery, even if you have autolock turned completely off.
  • Re-adds the following URL schemes:
  • unlox://lock
  • unlox://wake
  • unlox://screensaver
  • unlox://relaunch
  • unlox://check-for-update
  • unlox://reset-bluetooth
  • unlox://quit

New in Unlox 1.3.6 (May 10, 2017)

  • MacID for macOS now remembers between launches if you asked a Mac to disconnect. Handy for those (often) times that Bluetooth needs resetting.
  • Tap to Unlock tap pattern no longer gets forgotten if you have to forget and re-add your primary device. You still need to have a device paired to actually use Tap to Unlock, though.
  • You can now stop MacID from disabling auto-lock when apps keep your screen awake. Use this with caution because auto-lock may trigger while you're watching a movie!
  • Ensures that MacID AppleScript extensions get run in alphabetical order. To find out more about MacID for macOS AppleScript extensions, search for "extension" on the MacID blog.

New in Unlox 1.3.5 (Sep 27, 2016)

  • Fixes an issue where it could take two attempts to enter a password on Sierra.
  • Fixes an issue where a device could wrongly show in the setup window if macOS is having trouble finding the proper MacID service.
  • Fixes Tap to Unlock lock screen UI glitch.
  • Reduces change that MacID for macOS (and iOS) show the German version for English users.
  • Prevents proximity features from trying to activate while the device is still connected but the macOS account is currently not active. (That is, if someone else is also logged in)

New in Unlox 1.3.4.6 (May 31, 2016)

  • New:
  • Adds option to allow Tap to Unlock to work when Terminal is active. Note that MacID has no way of knowing if Terminal is asking for a password, so successfully tapping your tap pattern will always input your password into the window.
  • Adds an option to notify you when the Mac App Store is asking for a password. For this to work properly your Mac's account password must be the same as your App Store account password.
  • Enabling the feature above also enables Tap to Unlock for the Mac App Store.
  • Increases the size of the lock screen menu item.
  • Improves reconnection times.
  • Moves some options to a new "Advanced" menu in the More menu.
  • Includes support for new colour schemes.
  • Improves elevated auth requests by only sending a request if the system is asking for an actual password.
  • Adds an option to make any device the primary device.
  • Improves Tap to Unlock responsiveness when waking from deep sleep.
  • Adds an option to stop searching for devices when it's in the "Looking for..." stage. This is useful if you have multiple devices paired but don't need it to scan for some of them while you're away from home, for example.
  • Lifts the 4000 character limit on sending clipboard text.
  • Fixed:
  • Fixes an issue where a device disconnecting and reconnecting during password setup could cause the setup window to close.
  • Bluetooth scanning now 'pauses' between each connection attempt to help alleviate cfprefsd CPU issues.
  • Fixes an issue where an unlock request would get sent if an iOS device connects while the screensaver is running but the lock screen isn't visible.
  • Fixes an issue where Proximity Wake would continually press the return key.
  • Fixes an issue where elevated auth requests would get sent even if the account isn't an admin account.
  • Fixes an issue where selecting some Auto-lock options would cause "Limit to battery power" to become enabled.
  • Fixes an issue where MacID would MacID wouldn't stop scanning after searching for new devices.
  • MacID now forces itself to activate when showing alerts so it's better for VoiceOver users.
  • Fixes an issue where the lock screen icon may not always appear.
  • Prevents a Spotify-related crash.
  • Prevents an issue where "lock on disconnect" may fail.
  • Fixes an issue where forgetting a primary device wouldn't automatically assign a new primary device.
  • Fixes an issue where choosing "Reconnect" wouldn't show that it's "Looking" even though it was searching for the device.
  • Fixes an issue where choosing "Uninstall" would re-save known devices just before uninstalling.
  • Fixes an issue where the Auto-lock menu wouldn't properly disable items if Proximity Wake was set to a conflicting option.
  • Fixes an issue where clicking the continue button multiple times during setup would cause multiple instances of the same device to be saved as a known peripheral.

New in Unlox 1.3.3.12 (Mar 25, 2016)

  • Focuses on improving reconnections.
  • Fixes an issue where launching MacID while Spotify or iTunes is running and paused would still cause the track name to be sent to MacID for iOS.
  • Moves the Auto-lock disabled reason to the main menu.
  • Auto-lock disabled reason now shows if it's disabled because you've set it to be limited to power adapter only and you're on battery, and vice-versa.
  • Auto-lock disabled reason will only show if you have Auto-lock enabled.
  • Adds an option to completely hide MacID from the Dock and Menu Bar. After hiding MacID you'll need to click the MacID app icon again to get it back.
  • Adds an option to set a keyboard shortcut to completely hide MacID.
  • Improves password entry reliability.
  • Pressing play or pause on MacID for iOS while the screen is locked will wake the screen to play/pause and then automatically send the screen back to sleep.
  • Fixes some nasty memory leaks.
  • Fixes an issue where moving the MacID menu from the Dock to the Menu Bar would fail.
  • Reduces the amount of random connections when Bluetooth briefly wakes up while the lid is closed. Unfortunately there are times when the system reports that the screen is awake even when the lid is closed so MacID will send you an unlock request. I know this is annoying so I'm continually looking into a way to work around this.
  • Adds automatic relaunching for some Bluetooth errors (MacID will only automatically relaunch once an hour in case it gets into a loop)
  • Adds some logging to the console so you have a better idea of what's happening when something goes wrong with Bluetooth etc.

New in Unlox 1.3.2.3 (Feb 29, 2016)

  • Fixes an issue where auto-unlock wouldn't work from the screensaver.
  • Fixes an issue where AppleScript extensions wouldn't run.
  • MacID will now not monitor trackpad events if Tap to Unlock is not set up, which is something people have asked me for because it can interfere with programmes like Adobe Fireworks.
  • Fixes an issue where choosing the Monochrome Light colour scheme on iOS would make MacID windows difficult to read.
  • Adds a missing translation for "Looking for primary iOS device..."
  • Fixes many other little crashes.

New in Unlox 1.3.2.2.1 (Feb 25, 2016)

  • Fixes an issue where the MacID menu icon would be difficult to see when using OS X Dark Mode.
  • Fixes an issue which could cause MacID to crash when opening the Auto-lock menu.
  • Multiple little fixes thanks to crash reporting. Thanks to everyone who turns crash reporting on!
  • Stops the auto-lock notification appearing on the screen so often.

New in Unlox 1.3.2.1 (Feb 24, 2016)

  • Hotfix for an issue where the MacID menu icon would show as a square on some Macs.

New in Unlox 1.3.2 (Feb 24, 2016)

  • Adds the ability to set keyboard shortcuts for locking, sending the clipboard, relaunching and quitting MacID.
  • MacID can now even display the currently playing song if MacID for OS X is launched mid-song.
  • Completely re-written data send logic to improve communication between devices and prevent crashes.
  • Completely re-written window management to make it quicker for me to add new features in the future.
  • Adds support for using the colour scheme chosen in your primary iOS device. Changing the colour on iOS animates the colour change in any MacID for OS X windows open. Really swish!
  • MacID windows now use the lovely diagonal gradient, just like MacID for iOS the MacID website.
  • Adds support for getting more reliable device name information (rather than it sometimes just showing “iPhone”).
  • Prevents the Dock icon briefly appearing and disappearing on app launch.
  • Prevents an issue where the MacID menu items would be greyed out on app launch.
  • Adds support for only showing the snooze button on iOS notifications when the notification is sent due to Proximity Wake.
  • Snoozing Proximity Wake from the iOS app will press the escape key so the screen shuts off straight away.
  • Prevents the auto-lock warning notification not dismissing even if you use the keyboard or mouse.
  • If the password is missing from the keychain, MacID will display the “Save Password” window on launch.
  • Adds the ability to relaunch MacID from the More menu. Useful for quickly fixing Bluetooth connection issues.
  • The Lock Screen menu item now has a nicer, tidier looking icon.
  • RSSI information now shows above the primary iOS device to make it clearer which device MacID is getting the information from.
  • Device menus now show more reliable states, and the primary iOS device now states that it’s primary.
  • Adds the ability to add more than two devices if you so wish, however two is still recommended due to OS X not handling multiple connections particularly well.
  • Windows are now “floating” windows. This means that if you accidentally click away from a MacID window you won’t have to bring up Mission Control to get back to it.
  • MacID lock-screen UI now displays properly if the screen is locked when dismissing a screensaver.
  • MacID also now properly hides it’s lock screen UI if you press escape on the screensaver’s lock screen. Previously it would get stuck on the screen.
  • Auto-lock menu now shows is an app or process is stopping the screen from sleeping (which disables auto-lock). Unfortunately the Caffeine app uses some way of keeping the screen awake that MacID can’t detect.
  • Adds the ability to change your Tap to Unlock tap pattern without having to first disable Tap to Unlock.
  • New progress indicator when sending/receiving large amounts of clipboard text.
  • If you’re using a Dock icon instead of the Menu Bar icon, the Dock icon will show a “!” if there’s an issue like Bluetooth being turned off or unavailable.
  • Brings back the “auto-move” option if MacID is launched anywhere other than the Applications folder. Useful for people who don’t use automatic updates and prefer to use the website.
  • MacID now determines that a user is active if the keyboard or mouse has been used in the last 3 seconds, previously it was 5. Doesn’t sound like much, but some people can get away from their Mac sooner than 5 seconds and auto-lock won’t trigger.
  • If you have automatic updates disabled, choosing “check for update” will now take you to the website’s update page (like before automatic updates were implemented).
  • Proximity Wake now imposes a 5 second delay after screen sleep to stop it triggering as people are walking away.
  • Slightly updated app icon.
  • Improves t he look of the menu bar icon on non-Retina Macs.
  • Fixes a glitchy looking activity indicator window.
  • Fixes an issue where “taps” would get stuck on the screen.
  • Prevents an issue where snooze time remaining could show a long negative number.
  • Updates Sparkle to use the latest version.
  • MacID now detects if VoiceOver is enabled, if it is MacID automatically shows certain hidden items that would otherwise be inaccessible.
  • Adds German localization.

  • Temporarily removes "auto-move" option to improve situations where the MacID menu may be greyed out.

New in Unlox 1.3 (Oct 26, 2015)

  • You can now add a secondary iOS device. Proximity Wake and Auto-lock work off your Primary Device. If you remove a Primary Device any Secondary Device will assume the role of Primary Device.
  • You can now extend MacID by dropping AppleScript text files (they MUST be exported as text files) into onSleep, onLock, onWake, onUnlock directories in ~/Application Support/MacID/. MacID will execute these scripts at the respective event. For example, you could pause iTunes when your Mac locks, and resume playing when your Mac unlocks.
  • Adds option to hide the Menu Bar icon and move the MacID menu into the Dock icon. The Dock icon will have a badge count with number of iOS devices connected.
  • When adding a new device, if MacID already knows what your password is you won't be asked for it again.
  • Adds option to limit Auto-lock and Proximity Wake to power adapter or battery only (on portable devices).

  • Fixes an issue where MacID may stop receiving screen wake/lock notifications from the system in El Capitan.
  • Fixes an issue where other apps could report that the system was currently entering into a secure text field.
  • Fixes an issue where using Tap to Unlock during an elevated privilege request could also lock the Mac.
  • Tap to Unlock now ignores touches which move on the trackpad which makes setting up simpler, and also reduces the chance of accidentally locking the screen if "Tap pattern locks Mac" is enabled.
  • Adds support for snoozing requests from MacID for iOS. Tip: to un-snooze a Mac, in MacID for iOS, slide a connected Mac left and tap "snooze".
  • Snoozing requests are currently fixed at 1 hour. See how long is left by clicking the MacID menu.
  • Adds support for MacID for iOS' better notification management.
  • Auto-lock now defaults to sending a confirmation notification to your iOS device.
  • Adds "Uninstall" option.
  • Improves inputting password into elevated privilege requests.

  • Fixes an issue where VoiceOver would read devices in the discovery window as "text".
  • Uses default system font.
  • The Menu Bar icon now shows the number of Macs connected.
  • The Menu Bar icon is slightly smaller to match the size of (most of) Apple's icons.

New in Unlox 1.2.5 (Sep 4, 2015)

  • Fixes an issue where auto-lock notifications would keep being sent even if the Mac was already locked.
  • Proximity Wake now uses the average signal strength rather than the raw signal strength, which should stop it continually activating whenever the signal jumps about even if your phone is right next to your Mac.
  • Tap to Unlock can now be used during OS X authorisation requests, like dragging a protected file to the trash. (You won't get any visual feedback)

New in Unlox 1.2.3 (Aug 6, 2015)

  • This update improves Auto-lock, Proximity Wake, Tap to Unlock and VoiceOver support:
  • Auto-lock relies on signal strength, which can sometimes fluctuate and causes auto-lock to trigger. MacID will now continually check if you're actively using your Mac, and if you are MacID will cancel auto-lock for you.
  • To determine if you're using your Mac, MacID will check if you've used your keyboard or mouse within the last 5 seconds, whether you're watching video, or whether you have a finger resting on the trackpad. If auto-lock triggers while you're not actively using your Mac but you are sitting at it, you can now cancel auto-lock by simply touching the trackpad, or pressing any key.
  • If Auto-lock gets cancelled by either you or MacID, MacID will now automatically decrease the sensitivity slightly up to a maximum of -10dBm, and resets itself after 5 minutes where your iOS signal may have levelled out again.
  • You can now tell MacID to automatically lock your Mac when your iOS device disconnects. You must enable this in the MacID menu.
  • Auto-lock has also been improved to only activate if your iOS device has actually returned to your Mac.
  • Auto-lock options automatically disable themselves in the MacID menu when Auto-lock is disabled.
  • Proximity Wake has been changed to be either -60dBm, or -10dBm less than the current Auto-lock setting. This will make it more sensitive and should trigger quicker. Proximity Wake will only activate if your iOS device has first left and then returned to your Mac.
  • You can now use either ALT key to view current RSSI information, and also added an option to always display RSSI information.
  • RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) information will update automatically if you have either Auto-lock or Proximity Wake enabled. If you don't have either enabled, RSSI information will update when you click the MacID menu.
  • You can now use Tap to Unlock when your display is asleep and the screen is locked; no need to wake your display first. Note that this will only work if your system is awake, but your display is asleep.
  • You can also now use Tap to Unlock to authorise admin requests, like dragging protected files to the Trash.
  • VoiceOver support for setting up Tap to Unlock has been improved, VoiceOver now knows about the Tap Capture Area. The easiest way to set up Tap to Unlock with VoiceOver is to allow the VoiceOver cursor to move the mouse cursor, which will ensure your mouse cursor is in the Tap Capture Area when tapping your Tap Pattern.
  • Save, Reset and Continue buttons are now more descriptive when using VoiceOver.
  • MacID for OS X has a new icon for the Dock and Applications folder.
  • This update also includes a fix for an issue which stopped MacID working with OS X El Capitan Beta 6.
