Legend Maker Changelog

What's new in Legend Maker 2.1

Feb 14, 2017
  • New Features:
  • Improved formatting of pop-up notes in ePub 3 books.

New in Legend Maker 2.0 (Aug 29, 2016)

  • New features:
  • You can now generate ePub 3 books instead of ePub 2 books. Great for books featuring pop-up footnotes and embedded audio and/or video. Note that there is one major limitation: Kindle books can only be generated from ePub 2 books. Legend Maker will not let you select both ePub 3 and Kindle book generation at the same time.
  • You can now specify the book language as something other than English.
  • Endnote return character is now a ↩ to better represent returning to the previous location.

New in Legend Maker 1.6.1 (May 26, 2014)

  • More improvements to line break parsing.

New in Legend Maker 1.6 (May 10, 2014)

  • New Features:
  • If you are interested in being able to set language metadata as part of the book information, please contact us at [email protected]. We have some infrastructure in place and would like to work with you to determine the best approach to take. Thanks!
  • You can now specify "fimage:" to indicate that an image should fill an entire page. This is especially useful if you have an image larger than the ebook readers screen: using "fimage:" ensures that the image is scaled to fully fit on the screen. Prior to this the image would bleed outside the page boundaries.
  • You can now use "pnh:my own endnotes title" (for "Put Notes Here") to indicate where you want endnotes placed and have it use your own title instead of the default "Endnotes". In all other ways it's the same as using "bookmark:endnotes" (this behaves in a similar fashion to the use of "toc:" instead of "bookmark:contents").
  • Added the tag "srh:" (for "Start Reading Here") as a special bookmark that indicates to the ebook reader the page your book should start on the first time it's opened. This is useful if you want to skip introductory material such as ToC, copyright, etc. Note that this will only work with ePub books and ebook readers that support this feature (e.g. iBooks). The current version of the mobi converter provided by Amazon (kindlegen) isn't converting this marker correctly.
  • Legend Maker now ensures that your ebook only contains media files actually referenced in your manuscript.
  • Legend Maker now warns you if your manuscript contains multiple bookmarks with the same name.
  • Legend Maker will show a notification when a book is made and ready for your review.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Consecutive bookmarks (e.g. when inserting the ToC) no longer results in a blank page. LM doesn't even require blank lines between them anymore!
  • Consecutive bookmarks will no longer result in multiple entries to the same page (in the ToC). All consecutive bookmarks, prior to the last one, are now ignored (not including items such as the ToC and endnotes).
  • Ensures that the cover doesn't bleed outside the page boundaries.
  • Correctly handles internal linking when a ToC is placed in the book.
  • Correctly handles internal linking when there are trailing spaces in the "bookmark:" text.
  • Correctly handles mixed case "image:" tags.
  • Improved line break parsing.
  • Now handles old Mac text formatting of bookinfo files.
  • Handles audio and video files with spaces in their names, since the ePub standard doesn't allow them, by removing the spaces for you.
  • If there is no end of link tag (}}) LM now quits trying to make a link instead of corrupting the rest of the section with a link that's the length of the paragraph.
  • kindlegen detection has been upped to the version (2.9) available at the time of this release.

New in Legend Maker 1.5.5 (Jan 15, 2013)

  • New Features:
  • Tabbed indentation causes major formatting problems with the latest Adobe ePub engine. Legend Maker now replaces tabs with a fixed number of spaces, to ensure that the book formats correctly everywhere.
  • To ensure reliable indenting please use margin adjustments instead of tabbing.
  • You can now use "toc:" to force the inclusion of a Table of Contents at that location in your book. The ToC is bookmarked and the text following the colon is used as the title for the ToC. You can still use "bookmark:contents" to force a ToC with the default title of "Table of Contents".
  • Require an update to the latest version of kindlegen and warn people about OS X 10.8 whining about unsafe downloads.
  • Ensures validation with the new EpubCheck version 3.0.
  • Upgraded save panels to use new APIs.

  • Detects (and issues a warning for) corrupted RTF files.
  • Detects (and issues a warning for) invalid hyperlinks created in Word.
  • Detects (and issues a warning for) endnotes that don't end within a paragraph.
  • Detects (and issues a warning for) negative indentations (text outside page boundaries). Such indentations will result in a book being rejected for inclusion in the iBookstore.
  • KindleGen has been upgraded to version 1.2. Legend Maker will "encourage" you to download the latest version and add it to Legend Maker (to ensure that you're getting the best possible .mobi files).

  • Fix previewing Kindle books to work with the latest version of Kindle for Mac. Please update to the latest version to ensure proper previewing of .mobi books.
  • Ensures that there is only one cover page in a Kindle book. This also removes the cover from the Table of Contents (since readers such as iBooks just ignore that entry).
  • Ensure correct formatting when the formatting change occurs at an endnote boundary.
  • Improves formatting for older documents that have been converted to Word/RTF from another word processor format (such as Word Perfect).
  • Properly handle spaces after image file and bookmark names.

  • New Features:
  • Now requires KindleGen (from Amazon, follow the directions within Legend Maker to download) for generating .mobi Kindle books.
  • Adds "Preview Kindle" option, which will open the Kindle book with Kindle for Mac (if it's present, if it isn't then Legend Maker will ask you to download and install it).
  • Forces the Kindle to respect paragraphs that are not indented.
  • The ePub now includes a "hidden" table of contents file that can be used by Amazon's KindleGen to convert an ePub into a valid Kindle .mobi book.
  • Ensures proper ordering of the Cover in the table of contents (so that it always appears as the first entry when using KindleGen).
  • The demo version now includes building the Kindle book, since it's now easy to verify the book formatting using Kindle for Mac.
  • Support for documents that are right-to-left. This includes proper extraction of bookmarks and providing guidance to iBooks that it should start the book at the "end" of the book instead of the "beginning".
  • Verifies that all files (images, audio, video) referenced in a book are present in the book. If not, a message lists the files that are missing.

  • You can now include audio and video in ePub books. Create multimedia books for the iPad and iPhone! See "Preparing a Manuscript" (step three) in the Help menu for details.
  • Book files are now named using the ISBN (if an ISBN is present), making for easier book management and archiving. This has the added benefit of making the ePub ready for uploading to services such as kobobooks.com and Google.
  • Legend Maker retains the current naming conventions when there is no ISBN (using the containing folder's name).

New in Legend Maker 1.1.5 (Jul 28, 2010)

  • Allow multiple bookmarks with the same name — useful if you have multiple books within a single manuscript. The table of contents will correctly reference the different sections, but you will only be able to (internally) link to one of the bookmarks (the last one defined in your manuscript).

  • Ensures that paragraph indentations are always included when viewing books in iBooks.
  • Full support for switching between left and full justification of text (within a reader) — some books would not properly switch to left justification (in iBooks) when the manuscript text was fully justified.
  • Fixes a formatting problem with lists and improved table formatting.
  • Minor bug fixes.

New in Legend Maker 1.1 (May 30, 2010)
