Growly Photo Changelog

What's new in Growly Photo 2.4.4

May 9, 2024
  • Sometimes Edit→Copy can fail, for example when cropping a photo in HEIC format, because the resulting data is too large to put on the clipboard. If this happens, Photo informs you instead of failing silently. The workaround is to use Image→Save Photo As, then copy that image.
  • Different cameras store the creation date in the photo’s metadata slightly differently. Photo can now recognize more date formats, which allows you to fix the creation date for these photos.
  • Search in the help window was broken.

New in Growly Photo 2.4.3 (Nov 7, 2023)

  • If a photo is geotagged, the “Show Location” button in the Metadata section of the detail panel will take you to Google Maps to show where the photo was taken.

New in Growly Photo 2.4.2 (Sep 6, 2023)

  • The names of folders in the navigator were often gray for no good reason.

New in Growly Photo 2.4.1 (May 14, 2023)

  • Minor cosmetic enhancements.

New in Growly Photo 2.4 (Nov 15, 2022)

  • Photo now requires Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite or later.
  • The count of photos in a folder was difficult to read in the selected folder in light mode.

New in Growly Photo 2.3.4 (Sep 8, 2021)

  • Some effects, especially the Hole distortion, create holes or gaps in the image. The color of the void areas varied depending on where the image was being used. Now it is consistently black.
  • When restricting photo sizes in the Find dialog, you can specify whether to look at the height, width, or both.

New in Growly Photo 2.3.3 (Jul 7, 2021)

  • When viewing metafile data in the format panel, unexpected date formats could cause a hang.

New in Growly Photo 2.3.2 (May 20, 2021)

  • A new command, File→Adjust Creation Date, allows you to make incremental changes to the selected photos’ file creation date, or set part of the date such as year to a specific value. This command is available on the File menu only when the option key is held down.
  • The undo command for marking photos had the wrong name.

New in Growly Photo 2.3.1 (Feb 17, 2021)

  • A new section of the detail panel shows metadata for the photo, including the device that created it and how it was created. See .
  • File→Creation Date Series did not notice a new increment number unless you typed tab or return; clicking OK didn’t do it.

New in Growly Photo 2.3 (Jan 5, 2021)

  • Support for macOS 11 Big Sur.
  • Photo runs natively on Apple Silicon in new Macs.
  • Changes to the Find dialog:
  • If you enter “without the words” and no other criteria, all photos that do not have those words will be found. Previously the “without” words only worked if you also entered a word or phrase that should be found.
  • You can now require that photos match a size requirement (larger or smaller than some value) or an aspect ratio (tall or wide).

New in Growly Photo 2.2 (Aug 19, 2020)

  • File→Add Entire Folder now reproduces the folder structure from the Finder: nested subfolders appear in their proper locations and they’re sorted by name.
  • The number of columns shown in the thumbnail list is now saved with the library.
  • You can prevent changes to a library by setting the Locked option in the Finder (File→Get Info). This also disables all changes to the photo files the library includes, including renaming, changing the creation date, and moving to the Trash.
  • The Window menu now has a Next Window command.
  • The Jump button in the Edit→Keywords dialog was never usable.
  • The crop size applies to all libraries, but changing the crop size for one library did not redraw all libraries to show uncropped photos.
  • Starting on Mac OS 10.15 Catalina, the “Original Folder” button in the Save Photo As dialog didn’t work due to pointless changes in the OS. On 10.15 and later that button no longer appears.

New in Growly Photo 2.1.3 (May 6, 2020)

  • In the preview window, marked photos are explicitly labeled “Marked” instead of using the cryptic asterisks.
  • If the window tab preference specified that all new windows be merged into tabs, and you opened more than one file at a time, some of them became separate windows instead.
  • Minor bug fixes.

New in Growly Photo 2.1.2 (Feb 7, 2020)

  • Save and Save As were broken on Mac OS 10.15 Catalina. Apple changed the way the magic worked and I didn’t catch it.

New in Growly Photo 2.1.1 (Feb 5, 2020)

  • When you rename a file, the library is marked as needing to be saved.

New in Growly Photo 2.1 (Dec 12, 2019)

  • Dark mode and accent colors are supported.
  • The app is “notarized,” which means that Mac OS 10.15 will run it without complaint.
  • Finding a moved file would not update the photo thumbnail and could result in the photo library being corrupted.
  • If you hold down option when you click the Find button for a moved photo, Photo will attempt to locate all lost photos in the library that were moved to the same place. If you don’t hold down option, Photo will at least look in all nested folders below the current one.
  • Trashing photos did not update the count of photos for the folder.

New in Growly Photo 2.0.0 (Aug 31, 2018)

  • In version 1 of of Photo you could have only one library of photos, the built-in library. In version 2 you can have as many libraries as you like. This allows you to create a higher level of organization and reduce the size of each library so that opening and saving are faster. To enable multiple libraries, go to Preferences.
  • Library windows can be merged into tabs in one window using the window tabs introduced in Mac OS 10.12 Sierra.
  • Most menu commands that operate on individual photos (versus the picture file or the library) have been moved to the new Image menu. Find, crop, and other useful commands are now located here.
  • The Find dialog has a new option for the action to take with matching photos. As before it can either select the next photo that matches or create a new folder with the search results, but now you can also have it select all matching photos in the current folder. These can then be marked, deleted, previewed, etc.
  • Many other small enhancements.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.7 (Feb 5, 2018)

  • When you delete an empty folder, Photo will not ask if you’re sure you want to delete it.
  • Minor bug fixes.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.6 (Feb 5, 2018)

  • The preview window has a new control which removes the current photo from the preview (but doesn’t delete the photo itself). The delete key performs the same function.
  • Improvements to Help.
  • Bug fixes.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.5 (Jun 10, 2017)

  • Journal now requires Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
  • Bug fixes.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.4 (Dec 2, 2016)

  • A navigator below the groups and folders list allows you to go back to the previous folders you’ve visited.
  • In the thumbnail list, the arrow keys and home/end behave more reasonably at the start and end of the list.
  • Bug fixes.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.3 (Aug 12, 2016)

  • Bug fixes.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.2 (Dec 28, 2015)

  • Closed folders show the count for all nested folders.

New in Growly Photo 1.1.1 (Dec 28, 2015)

  • Many small improvements and bug fixes.
