Growly Notes Changelog

What's new in Growly Notes 4.3.9

Nov 7, 2023
  • Bug fixes
  • Several of the lists in the format panel (for example paragraph tabs) were squashed.
  • Selecting a table column and choosing Format→Plain changed text in unselected columns as well.
  • Changing the width of a table column set numerous undo events instead of just one.
  • Under very rare conditions table columns could not be resized properly and the table would not resize to fit the note.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.8 (Sep 6, 2023)

  • Bug fixes:
  • When you try to open a notebook in a shared folder, if it has already been opened by another computer Notes warns you that the notebook may be damaged if two people work on the same notebook at the same time. Unfortunately, the Open and Cancel buttons in the warning dialog were reversed, so the wrong thing happened.
  • When you selected a picture embedded in a text note and then clicked in a different note, the picture stayed highlighted. This didn’t happen when you selected text instead.
  • Undoing a change to the opacity of a picture note didn’t work.
  • Applying a note border from Format→Manage Styles didn’t update the format panel.
  • On older systems such as Mac OS 10.12, after using Insert→Snapshot and then another dialog such as Tools→Sort, the snapshot dialog would reappear unbidden. Very rude.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.7 (May 15, 2023)

  • Bug fixes:
  • If you used Services→Send to Growly Notes for text with embedded images, some apps (such as Safari) did not send the images, just the text.
  • The Zoom tool was too narrow on macOS 13.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.6 (May 15, 2023)

  • Enhancements:
  • Sections and notebooks can now be locked in the format panel. This prevents further changes to that item, although you can turn off the lock whenever you want. Locking a notebook like this is equivalent to locking it in the Finder’s Get Info window, but causes fewer problems when backing up the notebook.
  • All expandable outlines in lists (such as template lists and favorite links) were too tall in macOS 13.
  • Bug fixes:
  • Remarks in pages, sections, and notebooks were not updated during a sync. Neither was the Don’t print option in pages or sections.
  • If you performed a search, closed the workbench, and repeated the search, the search results did not show. This is similar to the workbench bug that was fixed in 4.3.5.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.5 (Jan 12, 2023)

  • Bug fixes:
  • Sometimes when printing whole sections or notebooks, the page title would not be printed.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.4 (Jan 5, 2023)

  • Enhancements:
  • The format panel shows the duration of audio notes when they’re selected. Previously the duration was only shown in the tooltip bubble when you paused the mouse over the note. The duration is also shown for video notes, but only when they have Audio/Video checkpoints.
  • The rewind button on the A/V controller at the bottom of the window is visibly disabled during recording. It always was disabled, but now it looks it.
  • The commands Select Table and Select Whole Table Rows have been moved to the Table menu, and now there is also a Select Whole Columns.
  • If you hold down the option key while double-clicking a word, the word is selected but not the trailing spaces.
  • Bug fixes:
  • If you copied text that contained embedded images and pasted it to Growly Write, the pictures were lost.
  • In shared notebooks, any pages added or deleted during a sync (including conflict pages) would not show up in the navigator until you reloaded the section containing them.
  • The first time you tried to create a new audio or video recording (before playing anything else), it could fail.
  • When whole table columns were selected, all pictures in the table looked as if they were selected even if they weren’t in the selected columns.
  • Some ancient version 1 files could not be converted to the modern file format.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.3 (Nov 15, 2022)

  • Enhancements:
  • The format panel shows the duration of audio notes when they’re selected. Previously the duration was only shown in the tooltip bubble when you paused the mouse over the note. The duration is also shown for video notes, but only when they have Audio/Video checkpoints.
  • The rewind button on the A/V controller at the bottom of the window is visibly disabled during recording. It always was disabled, but now it looks it.
  • The commands Select Table and Select Whole Table Rows have been moved to the Table menu, and now there is also a Select Whole Columns.
  • If you hold down the option key while double-clicking a word, the word is selected but not the trailing spaces..

New in Growly Notes 4.3.2 (Aug 24, 2022)

  • Bug fixes:
  • On macOS 11 and later, if you quit Notes when the workbench was open to Favorites, Notes would crash when you restarted it.

New in Growly Notes 4.3.1 (Jun 26, 2022)

  • Enhancements:
  • OPML files created by OmniOutliner and a few other misguided apps contain subsidiary notes for some outline entries. Notes now reads those as well as the main text.
  • Bug fixes:
  • Custom colors in Preferences were not remembered properly, and all colors chosen from the color picker were slightly off.

New in Growly Notes 4.3 (Jun 17, 2022)

  • Enhancements:
  • Pages, sections, and notebooks have a Remarks section in the format panel. This is for your personal notes about that part of the notebook.
  • There’s a new shortcut for zooming to a specific value. Type ⌘1 to zoom to 100%, ⌘2 for 200%, and so on. These activate menu items on the View→Zoom By % submenu.
  • Tools→Find with Options has a new option to find all instances of a specific tag. If you choose this option without specifying text to find, Notes will also report all instances of the tag within text notes as well.
  • Notes can now read OPML files, which are often used for RSS lists but were also an export option for Circus Ponies Notebook.
  • Pasting links:
  • From secure websites (https://): queries and fragments (everything after ? or #) are removed from the initial display string. This used to work just for http://.
  • From Notes (e.g. Copy Link to Page): the link always becomes an active hyperlink even if Automatic Link Detection is off in Preferences.
  • New preferences:
  • In the Appearance pane: You can hide the popup bubble that shows the size of images.
  • In the Navigation pane: The back/forward buttons on the toolbar could jump between notebooks until version 4, when they became tied to one notebook. The new default is doing it the old way—the buttons will cross notebooks—but you can go back to the one-notebook scheme using the Toolbar back/forward option.
  • In the Text pane: You can put the current date and/or time at the start of all new text notes. This does not apply if the note is created with one of the link trigger characters. The text will not auto-expand as you type, it’s set to a reasonably large width unless a default size has been set for text notes.
  • Bug fixes:
  • When search results were selected in the workbench, the page name could be hard to read.

New in Growly Notes 2.0.3 (Feb 27, 2014)

  • Backups are now saved in the background when possible.
  • Pages with many PDF notes load faster than they did.
  • By default a text selection can now shrink using shift and the arrow keys.
  • BUG FIXES:
  • When printing very long pages with lots of notes, some notes far down on the page were not printed.
  • If more than one note was selected, Edit/Copy was not enabled.

New in Growly Notes 2.0.2 (Feb 11, 2014)

  • Other minor improvements. See the What's New help topic.
  • MAJOR FIXES:
  • When certain types of complex text (usually from the web) were pasted or opened from version 1 notebooks, Notes could hang.
  • Certain pages, in unpredictable circumstances, could crash Notes when you selected them.
  • Undoing a page or section rename would crash.
  • In rare circumstances, Notes could claim that a notebook could not be saved, and fail attempting to recover it, when in fact there was nothing wrong.
  • All the pages could be dragged out of a section, which was lethal.

New in Growly Notes 2.0.1 (Jan 21, 2014)

  • When auto-saving was interrupted, the notebook could be destroyed.
  • Text in several languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, was not converted properly from version 1 notebooks or pasted text.

  • Certain unusual arrangements of text in version 1 files could cause a crash.

  • Trying to export an old recording while a new recording was in progress would crash.
  • MINOR FIXES:
  • Some links were duplicated when copying to other apps.
  • Zooming in on some PDF notes could cause the PDF image to vanish.

  • When exporting a multi-section notebook to HTML, the section names were not shown in the index.

New in Growly Notes 1.2.9 (Jun 18, 2012)

  • New features:
  • Find With Options is now always visible on the Edit/Find menu.
  • You can now search for whole words using Find With Options. This option is thereafter used for all searches, not just ones started from the Find panel.
  • A new preference expands text replacements as you type. This is available on System 10.6 and later. (The text substitutions are defined in System Preferences, in the Language and Text pane, on the Text tab.)
  • A smaller font size is now available for the navigation outline in serious window layout. Previously this option was only available for the tabs in the fun layout.
  • If a floating note window is empty when you close it, the Scratchpad page that was created to hold the note will be deleted.
  • A new help topic explains How to Use Notes Efficiently. Please read it!
  • Fixed bugs:
  • When exporting to PDF, PDF notes did not display in the resulting PDF file.
  • Dragging links from Safari to Notes on 10.7 Lion did not properly create a link note.
  • Yet another way for the ruler to crash: click on the Styles popup menu when no text note was active. Now all the ruler controls are hidden except when working in text notes.
  • Changing the type of a table column could change the widths of the columns and generate spurious Undo entries.

New in Growly Notes 1.2.8 (Apr 16, 2012)

  • Page tabs can be indented to give a visual hierarchy of pages. They’re not true subpages, but it’s better than our old trick of putting spaces at the start of the page name.
  • By popular demand, notebooks can now be rearranged. The Scratchpad and Help still sink to the bottom of the outline, or the right of the tabs, but your notebooks can be in any order you like.
  • The File/Email submenu has a new command for emailing the text of any text note.
  • Automatic links and quote substitution can be turned off.
  • You can add a footer to pages with the page number and the names of the notebook, section, and page.

New in Growly Notes 1.2.7 (Apr 16, 2012)

  • Enhanced Notes to recover when the server doesn’t copy all the notebooks’ components.

New in Growly Notes 1.2.6 (Feb 6, 2012)

  • A bug fix release with no significant new features.
  • A minor enhancement to exporting has been made.

New in Growly Notes 1.2.5 (Jan 9, 2012)

  • Copy and paste for tables has been greatly improved.
  • Also, when copying or dragging data from web pages, the pictures are imported along with the text. You can capture a still image from a movie note.
  • Some important bug fixes complete the first update in our second year.

New in Growly Notes 1.1.2 (Apr 27, 2011)

  • Dragging emails to Notes has been improved even more, to correctly handle accented text and symbols. The highlighter has also been improved: it now has a default color, so the toolbar highlighter will work without any setup.
  • Floating note windows can be opened from the dock icon menu; this menu also allows you to jump to any open notebook from any program whenever Notes is running. The same capabilities are also available by adding Notes status to the menu bar. See the help notebook for the complete list of changes.

New in Growly Notes 1.1.1 (Apr 19, 2011)

  • Dragging emails to Notes has been improved: image and PDF attachments are now inserted along with the message text, and you can drag the window icon of a message in Apple’s Mail to create a link to email messages.
  • Floating notes windows can be opened from the Services menu of many applications. Several other changes were made as well.

New in Growly Notes 1.1 (Apr 6, 2011)

  • Password protect sections of your notebook.
  • Highlighting in all textual notes (title, text, and tables).
  • Drag emails from the message list of Apple’s Mail and Microsoft Outlook® onto Notes’s dock icon or onto a page. The email header and body become a new text note.
  • Improved import and export of tables.
  • The context menu for text notes now shows spelling corrections if applicable.
  • Improved PDF import options.
  • Numerous smaller improvements and bug fixes.

New in Growly Notes 1.0.3 (Mar 28, 2011)

  • The Insert/Link command had a bug that prevented you from inserting a link into a text note. This has been fixed. Just as when inserting pictures, if you’re typing in text the link will go into the text, otherwise it will create a new note.
  • Holding down the shift key when rotating drawings didn’t work properly. Now it correctly constrains the rotation to multiples of 45°.
  • A new preference in the Import panel allows you to extract the pages of PDF documents into picture notes instead of creating a PDF note. This is especially useful with the Print to Notes feature to allow you to annotate documents created in other apps.
  • You can now more easily create a list within a text note without using the ruler. Begin a paragraph with one of the three characters -*1 followed by tab, and Notes will create a new list in place. Hit return twice to go back to typing normal text. You can turn off automatic list creation in Preferences.
  • When you leave a page and come back, Notes will scroll to show exactly what you were looking at last time. You can turn this off in Preferences.
