  • All first-time users receive a new “warm welcome” upon startup
  • A new onboarding flow is available to some first-time consumer (non-Google Workspace) users. Note: First-time users in Google Workspace organizations will get the onboarding flow no sooner than version 82. To turn off the new flow for your organization, set the DisableOnboardingDialog key in the registry or plist settings. For instructions, go to Advanced Drive for desktop configuration.
  • The new flow is currently turned on for all customers in the canary program for testing purposes.
  • For Windows, changed the File Explorer sidebar icon to the Drive logo

  • Drive for desktop now supports Google Workspace Client-side encryption (CSE). Synced encrypted files appear as shortcuts on Windows and symbolic links on Mac. Additionally, users whose licenses support CSE can encrypt and upload local files to Google Drive.
  • Note: This capability will be rolled out to users on File Provider in a future release.
  • Users can now use a configurable keyboard shortcut to search their Drive files. The following mappings are set by default: Windows: Ctrl+Alt+g; macOS: ⌘+Option+g

  • Users who stream their My Drive can now view how hard drive space is utilized and unpin files so space can be reclaimed if needed. You can access the dashboard to manage storage by opening Drive for desktop, clicking settings "" and selecting Offline Files.

  • Important note for macOS users:
  • Starting with version 58, Drive for desktop will be rolling out a change that impacts macOS users over the next few releases. This update adds support for File Provider, a feature introduced by Apple in macOS 12.3 which provides native support for accessing cloud-based file systems like Google Drive. These changes will not impact the core capabilities of Drive for desktop but users will notice some slight changes in the functionality of the product. These include but are not limited to the following:
  • For users who stream their files, you can access the contents of your Drive in the “Locations” section of the Finder sidebar in a folder called “Google Drive”.
  • Dragging items in and out of a Google Drive folder will move files instead of copying them, by default.
  • When syncing is paused, you can’t download files.
  • Content is cached on the same volume as your home directory.
  • Downloaded and locally created files are accessible when Drive for desktop is not running.
  • QuickLook previews only work for downloaded files (files without a cloud icon).
