  • Enhanced compatibility with third party QuickTime components. iStopMotion automatically unloads certain QuickTime components that we have identified as incompatible with the app sandbox environment. However, it is strongly recommended that you uninstall the components that are listed in the warning message on startup as they affect stability in many apps. Click the help icon in that warning dialog for more details.

New in iStopMotion 2.8.2 Build 13830 (Aug 4, 2011)

  • A few more fixes, some of them cosmetic changes for OS X Lion.
  • Smaller changes in underlying frameworks.

New in iStopMotion 2.8.2 Beta 1 Build 3713 (Jul 25, 2011)

  • Implemented a temporary workaround for Apple changes regarding still camera support.
  • Special note just for this beta:
  • Make sure to remove all photos/videos from your memory card before using the camera with iStopMotion.
  • Set your camera to either JPG or RAW format but not to ayn combination (RAW+JPG) that produces more than one file per shot.
  • Smaller changes in underlying frameworks.

New in iStopMotion 2.8.1 Build 13693 (Jul 7, 2011)

  • iStopMotion 2.5 and later require at least Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.8, but Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.7 or later is highly recommended. If you are currently using Mac OS X v10.6.7 and plan need to work with a still camera on iStopMotion, please DO NOT YET update to 10.6.8, but stay on 10.6.7 for now! 10.6.8 will break capturing from still cameras. We are working on a fix.
  • Fixed an issue with the app silently quitting when capturing with a demo license installed. Sorry for the inconvenience!
  • Wording improvement in the General prefs. Thanks to Craig Lauridsen for spotting the inconsistency.
  • A few minor fixes for Mac OS X Lion.

New in iStopMotion 2.8 Build 13681 (Jun 21, 2011)

  • Russian localization! Thanks to the great work of Борис Матвеев (Boris Matveev) we now have iStopMotion fully localized into Russian.
  • Lots of work to re-enable capturing with Canon DSLRs on Mac OS X Snow Leopard v.10.6.5 and higher. We tested on many different configurations, especially with Canon 5D MKII and found it working every single time. However, we heard that older firmware versions of the camera prevented interaction with computers. We tested with version 2.0.8 available from Canon.
  • Filter effects such as Color Correction and Tilt Shift are now also applied when importing images via menu or drag & drop. Please make sure that a source is selected before importing.
  • Using the 'Edit in Image Editor…' command and copy & paste of image contents will not apply the effects when re-importing the edited frame.
  • Detecting bus overload when connecting too may devices (cameras, hard drives, …) to USB or Firewire ports.
  • Major efforts to improve color fidelity:
  • Preview and captured frame would sometimes not match exactly.
  • Copy & Paste used to deteriorate colors and brightness in previous versions.
  • There were noticeable differences between captured frames via continuous recording and single frame recording.
  • Still camera images were not always imported at the highest quality possible.
  • The world is just a better place when colors look alike.
  • Keyboard shortcuts now support non-ASCII languages and keyboards like Cyrillic and Greek.
  • Fixed a crash with foreground objects.
  • Changing values in the Color Correction module will now immediately update the still camera preview.
  • The recorded material would get blurry when switching between continuous and single frame recording.
  • Corrected a few typos, mostly in the built-in help.
  • Miscellaneous other fixes to both app and frameworks.
  • When editing frames with a non-square pixel aspect ratio, make sure that your editor correctly supports that sort of image, otherwise the result after editing will look distorted. We know that Photoshop and Preview handle it correctly while most common photo editors don't.
  • We would like to get your feedback if you need a switch to capture interlaced instead of de-interlaced frames from interlaced cameras.

New in iStopMotion 2.7 Build 3451 (Feb 2, 2011)

  • Japanse localization is back. Big thanks to Hayashi-san! If you need a great localizer, you should consider Eita Hayashi.
  • French localization is back. Thanks to Hervé Steyer and Matthieu Renault. Also highly recommended localizers.
  • Resolved a crash that sometimes occured when a camera was getting connected or disconnected.
  • Unfortunately most Canon DSLR cameras are no longer working on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and 10.6.6. Support had been added by Apple in 10.6.4 but once again dropped in 10.6.5. We don't know the reason for this but can confirm that Image Capture and Aperture also no longer work with those cameras. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about this right now. We will continue to investigate and keep you updated…
  • Various other fixes.

New in iStopMotion 2.6.1 Build 3425 (Jan 18, 2011)

  • Resolved a crash on startup on all Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.8 systems. Sorry about that! Supporting legacy systems is getting harder and harder and may soon vanish.
  • Resolved an issue that would destroy the Mac App Store version after using the "Send to iMovie" command.
  • Many other impovements and fixes for all versions, but even more so for the Mac App Store build.
  • Unfortunately most Canon DSLR cameras are no longer working on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and 10.6.6. Support had been added by Apple in 10.6.4 but once again dropped in 10.6.5.

  • Camera preview had wrong aspect ratio when capturing with a NTSC 4:3 video camera.
  • Improved the circumstances for showing the warning about missing HDV Codec.
  • Fixed quite a few rather esoteric crashes that still occured after 2.5.1 was released. No animals were harmed when performing the necessary voodoo.
  • As usual, many other small fixes and improvements.

New in iStopMotion 2.5.1 Build 3300 (Nov 23, 2010)

  • Improved handling of Tilt Shift configuration interface.

  • Many of smaller fixes and improvements, too many to name.

New in iStopMotion 2.5 Build 3278 (Nov 18, 2010)

  • This small update (revision 3278) fixes an important crashing issue on Mac OS X v10.5.8.
  • Complete move to modern QuickTime capture API for video cameras.
  • iStopMotion can now work with multiple video cameras at the same time,
  • does no longer block cameras from use in other (modern) apps like iChat.
  • Given that either Final Cut Studio or Logic Studio is installed you can now use HDV cameras in full HD resolution.
  • Tilt Shift Filter. Use this popular optical effect to make you scene look like a miniature. Especially appealing with time lapse movies. A convenient preset functionality lets you store your favorite settings for future use. Please note that Tilt Shift is not available on older MacBook and Mac mini computers with onboard Intel GMA graphics.
  • Color Correction filter. Easily change tint, brightness and contrast of images to either correct lighting deficiencies or achieve a special atmosphere. Also with added preset gorgeousness.
  • Send to iMovie. Direct one click transfer of your clip to iMovie ('08 or newer required). This allows you to very quickly add cool intros, transitions, effects, sounds and share your work through YouTube, MobileMe, …
  • Support for more recent Canon DSLR models (Mac OS X v 10.6.4 or later required).
  • New document and export presets matching sharing presets in iMovie.
  • Improved Apple Remote support. Both the old white as well as the new aluminum Apple Remote are supported in iStopMotion 2.5. Button assignments are:
  • MENU: Capture a frame
  • PLAY hold: Capture a preview frame (with still cameras)
  • PLAY/PAUSE tap: Start/stop playback
  • LEFT/RIGHT tap: move the timeline left by one frame
  • LEFT/RIGHT hold: move timeline to beginning of movie
  • The select button on the aluminum remote has the same function as PLAY/PAUSE.
  • Dynamic preview quality adjustment. This enableds users with older computers/graphics cards to work with high resolution cameras and effects like Tilt Shift. The resolution and frame rate of the camera previewed in iStopMotion will be dynamically adjusted so that your computer remains usable. Please note that capturing always uses the full quality of your camera.
  • Various user interface improvements.
  • Using "Save as" to overwrite your original document does no longer fail immediately. Nevertheless, please use "Save" to save your document and "Save As" only for saving it to a NEW file.
  • Edit in … would sometimes not reimport the saved frame correctly.
  • Lots of smaller fixes and improvements, way too many to name.

New in iStopMotion 2.1.2 Build 2872 (Mar 12, 2010)

  • On 10.5 and later files on HFS+ volumes can be externally renamed again.
  • Some systems send rename events even if file is not renamed externaly. Handling this correctly now.

New in iStopMotion 2.1.1 Build 2858 (Dec 8, 2009)

  • Some still cameras (like Nikon D60) would deliver wrong images in preview.
  • Several small improvements to German, French and Japanese localization. The ReadMe included on the disk image is now also localized in Japanese.
  • Work around crashing issues with rotoscope and background movies.
  • Background and foreground movies would sometimes not get updated on screen properly.
  • Still Camera test results can once again be submitted.
  • Several fixes, lots of them for improved Snow Leopard compatibility.

New in iStopMotion 2.1 Build 2814 (Oct 29, 2009)

  • iStopMotion 2.1 is the first Boinx Software product to provide a full Japanese localization! Apart from that it features all new markers and provides bugfixes improving support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) and fixing user reported issues. This update is free and strongly recommended for all iStopMotion 2.x users of the Home, Express and Pro versions.
  • Full Japanese localization included.
  • Markers. Markers are a convenient way to structure your timeline and to aid your animation, e.g. in timing motion. Give us feebdack how you like the current feature, so we can adopt it even better to your needs.
  • A marker is defined by a starting and an ending frame. Each marker has it's own name, color and description.
  • Create a new marker either via Movie > Marker > Add… or via context menu on the time ruler in the timeline.
  • Markers can be moved in the timeline by dragging them. Drag the small handles at start or end to just adjust that edge. Double click a marker bar to edit that marker.
  • Hovering over a marker will show it's descriptions in a help tag.
  • Support for long file names including no-latin characters on Mac OS X Leopard and later when working on modern file systems. This excludes FAT-32 formatted USB sticks.
  • Your "Hide Extension" choice in the "Save As" dialog is now honoured.
  • Several fixes, lots of them for improved Snow Leopard compatibility.
  • Lots of fixes and improvements to the underlying frameworks.

New in iStopMotion 2.0.8 Build 2676 (Jul 12, 2008)

  • Keyboard shortcuts should now work again. Version 2.0.5 introduced a couple of new shortcuts. If you customized your shortcuts, please click reset so see those new ones and customize shortcuts again to your needs.
  • Fixed a strange export movie length issue when using very low frame rates.
  • An issue with keyboard navigation and background tracks has been resolved.
  • A few more minor changes and improvements to the underlying frameworks.

New in iStopMotion 2.0.7 Build 2651 (May 12, 2008)

  • Some Canon DSLRs like the 20D work with iStopMotion (only on Mac OS X Lepard)! You need to set the camera to "normal", not into PTP mode as suggested before. All cameras that are supported for tethered shooting in Aperture should also work with iStopMotion. See this Apple Support article for details.
  • With QuickTime 7.4.5 installed, the Home and Express versions would sometimes either display a garbled image or even crash on machines with new (high resolution) built-in iSight cameras, such as recent iMac and MacBook Pro computers. We were able to work around this issue with a trade-off of a somewhat reduced performance on these machines.
  • Improved handling when running out of disk space.
  • The insert point now is always at the last frame when opning a movie.
  • More consistent transport behaviour. Jump to beginning now moves to the front of frame 1 so that you can insert frames at the beginning of the movie. Note that in this case there is no frame to display for the overlay.
  • The time unit is now saved into and loaded from the document.
  • Entering data in the time lapse interval and continuous recording fields works a lot more reliable.
  • Worked around another QuickTime issue with long file names. Please note that due to some QuickTime limitations file names can not be longer than 27 characters.
  • A few more minor changes and improvements. Also, some lurking memory issues have been resolved.

  • Another try to really fix the Copy32ARGB32ARGB crash on Intel based Macs.
  • Prevented a potential crash related to opening/creating new documents.
  • Adjusted drawing of certain buttons for Mac OS X 10.5.2.
  • In certain situations the preview movie could be wrong in one frame.
  • Thumbnail rendering now works in background for continuous recording sessions.
  • A memory leak related to continuous recording and image import.
  • Startup and swiching video source is faster with a DV camera connected and FinalCut Pro installed.
  • More improvements to the underlying frameworks.
  • Other work in preparation of the next major feature release.

New in iStopMotion 2.0.3 (Jan 29, 2008)

  • When importing a bunch of files, e.g. via using Import Images from Disk..., the import order of files is now the Finder sort order.
  • Updated to latest version of the great Remote Control Wrapper from Martin Kahr. Amongst other improvements this includes support for the Keyspan RF Remote for FrontRow if anybody happens to use that.
  • Includes one background and foreground set from the Boinx Winter Theme, previously only available as a separate installer.
  • Added an alert on startup when an old version of DVCPROHDMuxer is installed. This component comes with Final Cut Pro and old versions of it cause major problems on Leopard. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307092 for details of Final Cut Pro compatibility with Leopard.
  • Opening a movie with dimensions larger than the current license allows could lead to a crash.
  • Added hidden preference setting ("Delete Image After Download When Capturing") to leave a captured image on a still camera instead of removing it immediately.
  • Replacing rotoscope tracks could lead to an exception that prevented further saving of movies.
  • Rotoscope and soundtrack offsets were sometimes handled poorly.
  • Hopefully fixed a strange crash deep in QuickTime (Copy32ARGB32ARGB) that only appeared on Leopard and later QuickTime versions.
  • A memory leak that probably caused alls sorts of problems is gone.
  • Various performance improvements.
  • Small improvements to German localization.
  • Lots of improvements to the underlying frameworks.
  • Other small fixes in preparation of the next major feature release.
