Blue Crab Changelog

What's new in Blue Crab 5.1.2

Jan 13, 2016
  • Update for Mac OS 10.11
  • Fixed a bug opening the download directory from the grabber window (the 'Reveal' button), and similar problems with other convenience functions that open folders or files.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the opening of the log file from the File menu, and similar problems with other instances for opening certain files.

New in Blue Crab 5.1.1 (Feb 6, 2015)

  • Help menu link to the website and tour has been fixed.

New in Blue Crab 5.1 (Jan 23, 2015)

  • For document searching: updated the Spotlight indexer to support 64-bit Spotlight word extractors, which in particular fixes an issue with extracting words to create indexes of RTF files.
  • Removed the 2000 word limit on the number of words extracted. Previously an index would contain a maximum of 2000 unique words, now it includes as many as there are in the document.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.09 (Jan 6, 2015)

  • Removed deprecated system functions.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.08 (Nov 6, 2014)

  • The "Browse" button in the grabber windows were not working properly.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.07 (Nov 15, 2013)

  • Mavericks Update

New in Blue Crab 5.0.06 (Apr 18, 2012)

  • Fixed a bug in Lion where the mail server password in Server Settings was not always loaded due to a problem reading the Keychain Access record. This bug affected the mail notification and batch authentication features, which require keychain access.
  • The "classic" grabber window sports a new progress indicator that mimics the app's dock tile progress indicator.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.05 (Sep 7, 2011)

  • The "classic" grabber window's networking has been modernized to improve downloads, and simplified for ease of use by modelling it on the quicker grabber. The log pane has been simplified with each log entry containing: current URL, date and time and the complete server response for each request. It also sports a new progress indicator that mimics the app's dock tile progress indicator.
  • The built-in aggregator has been extended. It now supports aggregating files by modification date. This is done as follows: First the files are organized into folders according to the year, into "year folders," then the files for each year are aggregated by month and day into subfolders of each year folder.
  • There is a new menu item titled "Aggregate a Folder by Modification Date…" and the older menu item has been renamed to "Aggregate a Folder by extension…" The aggregator also now displays a progress window while it is working, because date aggregation can take a while to complete.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.04 (Aug 29, 2011)

  • The "classic" grabber window's networking has been modernized to improve downloads, and simplified for ease of use by modelling it on the quicker grabber. The log pane has been simplified with each log entry containg: currnet URL, date and time and the complete server response for each request.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.03 (May 25, 2011)

  • The built-in aggregator has been extended. It now supports aggregating files by modification date. This is done as follows: First the files are organized into folders according to the year, into "year folders," then the files for each year are aggregated by month and day into subfolders of each year folder. This is analagous to how iPhoto organizes photo files by date.
  • There is a new menu item titled "Aggregate a Folder by Modification Date…" and the older menu item has been renamed to "Aggregate a Folder by extension…"
  • The aggregator now displays a progress window while it is working, because date aggregation can take a while to complete.
  • Note that aggregation is performed "in place" modifying the locations of files in the chosen folder, and that this operation is not undoable by the app. So use it with caution, or you may want to operate on a copy, or make a backup.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.02 (May 17, 2011)

  • Browser support update: Various features of the app require the ability to obtain the current web browser's front window's URL so it can be imported automaticalluy into Blue Crab (see the "Grab" menu for example.) Recent changes to Google Chrome broke the ability to do that for Chrom, and it is now fixed. The method of obtaining the URL for Opera has also been updated.

New in Blue Crab 5.0.01 (Mar 15, 2011)

  • Bug fix: The progress bars in the Batch Download window progress column were not getting updated during the download of each item until the download completed. This was due to an inadvertent offset in an index.
  • Bug fix: Two labels in the Batch Downoad window were not bound to the edges of the window resulting in them obscurring the file list if you resized the window.
  • Blue Crab's webpages have been rewritten/updated.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.55 (Mar 11, 2011)

  • The default directory of the Search window is set to the app's application support folder.
  • The Bookmarks window is no longer created by default. Rather a new grabber window is displayed. Use the Bookmarks menu to show the Bookmarks window.
  • If a bookmark item's "shortcut icon" (also known as a favicon) can not be found it is set to a genric icon, and it is no longer looked up for the current session. This reduces the display speed of the window after it is initially loaded.
  • Bookmarks files are no longer ugraded from much older versions that date back to version 3.
  • All console logging has been removed.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.54 (Feb 3, 2011)

  • Batch Downloader: Added an "extension" filter as a compliment to the MIME type filter. This filter should be easier for users, since MIME types are less well known than extensions. Also, extension filters are much faster to apply because they do not require access to the server since the extension is part of the URL. Use the new "Extension Filter" button in the Batch Download window to access the editor.
  • Safari History Import: Mime and extension filters are now applied when importing URLs from Safari's History.
  • The mime and extension filters are loaded when the Batch Downloader is displayed. This means they are restored from the previous session. Make a note of that because it is possible you may forget that you have filters in effect.
  • Batch Downloader: The default state of the "Display Name" and "Display Modification Date" is off because it improves the speed of display of the window. Both of these options may require querying the server for the URL information, and that can be time consuming, especially if the list is long.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.53 (Jan 26, 2011)

  • All grabber activity is now written to the "global" log file; previously only the Batch Downloader used the global log file. You can open this log file using the "Open Console" item in the File menu.
  • The global log file's location is now in the "Blue Crab" folder in "Home > Library > Application Support > Limit Point Software"
  • Configuration files and the default "Grabbed Files" now reside in the "Blue Crab" folder in "Home > Library > Application Support > Limit Point Software." You can change the location grabbed files are placed using a custom configuration.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause the program to quit when starting a download for a redirected URL. This was because the log file was not initialized at the time the redirection was handled.
  • Fixed a bug in the Bookmarks window in which the program could hang while it tried to get the "shortcut icon" of an empty new bookmark item. This happened because the item does not contain a "real" URL.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.52 (Dec 15, 2010)

  • A new feature for "aggregating" files in folders has been added. Select the function from the File menu's new "Aggregate a Folder" menu item. Aggregating is the process of collecting all files in a folder into subfolders by file extension. The subfolder names are the extensions they contain.
  • The license screen message for new users has been removed.
  • New Blue Crab users now have a 30 day demo, rather than just 10.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.51 (Dec 1, 2010)

  • When the option to only save web location bookmarks (webloc's) is selected, the original extension of the URL is no longer replaced with the extension "webloc" but rather the whole URL is appended with that extension. This prevents a bookmark with a similar path and filename, but different extension, from being overwritten by a new bookmark with the same path and filename.
  • Network connectivity checking has been add to the following operations to prevent repetitive failures: all grabbers, and all types of batch downloading: downloading, archiving and imaging. When network connectivity is a problem, the program alerts you and ask if you want to continue.
  • Your option is to stop immediately (Cancel), or try to resolve the connection issue, and then continue (OK). Note that Blue Crab has an option for resuming downloads that can be used if you need to terminate a download: This option is named "Load URL data from disk, if available, when grabbing a website", see the "Grabber" pane to set this option.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.50 (Nov 26, 2010)

  • A new option has been added to the Grabber pane of Preferences: "Only save web location (webloc) files for each URL, not the content of the URLs." When this option is selected each URL will be saved as a web location file (with extension "webloc") rather than saved with the contents of the URL. This is a bookmarking facility.
  • A recent update to the web browser Opera changed the manner in which the browsers current URL can be contained. Blue Crab has been modified to support that change in its "current browser url" grabber methods.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.49 (Oct 26, 2010)

  • The Batch Downloader now respects list selections: The "Download," "Archive" and "Image" commands will now operate just on the URLs in a selection, or all URLs if there is no selection. (Note: if you have a selection, use "Command-click" to deselect it.) List selections are also now observed when you double click on them to open the URL in your default web browser.
  • The "Download," "Archive" and "Image" commands are now accessible via a contextual menu. Control-click on the list items to open the contextual menu. The "Open" command will open the selected URLs. The operations apply to the current list selection.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.48 (Oct 21, 2010)

  • The Batch Downloader list now has a new column called "URL Name." This name is the text which represents the URL's link in HTML. This value will be the URL's text that displays in your browser, commonly underlined or highlighted. It is a label for the link, analogous to the title of the page a URL references.
  • For each URL the Batch Downloader keeps track of a URLs name and title, if they exist. These values are now saved and restored when the batch download window is closed and opened, respectively, provided the option to save the whole batch list is ON. (Options for the batch download window are specified in program Preferences.)
  • The progress bars in the Batch Downloader are now properly updated when the window is deactivated and then re-activated. {previously the progress bars were not redrawn.)

New in Blue Crab 4.9.47 (Oct 6, 2010)

  • New Grabber Preference: This option is called "Pause quicker grabber on network error" and will cause the iterator to pause when a network error occurs, such as an unexpected disconnection. As usual, this option is OFF by default. Enabling this option may be desirable if the network is unreliable as it prevents the download from missing files during a downtime. You must manually resume a paused iteration.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.46 (Sep 17, 2010)

  • The Batch Download window has two new checkboxes for setting the option to show the "Name" and "Date" columns of the URL table. These are optional because both could possibly slow down the display of the list if it is large or the network is slow: each may require server access to find the values required. (Date: displays the modification date of the URL as returned by the server; Name: returns various forms of the URL "save" name, which if selected as "URL Title" requires server access to get the URL's title.) Both options are ON by default.
  • A new Preferences option is now available to select inclusion of a URL's search arguments in the "save" filename, when the option to save a URL by it's filename is selected. This option is OFF by default.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.44 (Aug 22, 2010)

  • New Batch Downloader URL generation feature: You can now import URLs whose parts are formed using a numeric range or string list. This is done by specifying the general form of the URL using special notation as in: "http://www.limit-point.com/{images,music,movies}/page[1-199].html." A string replacement list has the form {string1, string2,...,stringN}, as in {images, music, movies}. A numeric range has the form [n-m:x] (x is increment), as in [1-199] or [0-50:5]. Click the "Import or expand from URL…" button in the lower part of the Batch Download window. A window is displayed prompting for the string. If you enter a URL with no patterns, the links contained by the URL are imported, as usual. Otherwise the program generates all URLs using the string list and/or numeric range.
  • New Batch Downloader Preference: This option is called "Rename duplicates." If you select this option Blue Crab will rename any file by the same name as the current URL so that it can be downloaded. Otherwise, since the Batch Downloader does not overwrite files by the same name, files tat have the same name will not be downloaded (note that this depends on the selected file naming scheme you choose: using URL filename, name sequentially, using URL pathname or title.)

New in Blue Crab 4.9.43 (Aug 19, 2010)

  • URL data loading option: "Load URL data from disk, if available, when grabbing a website" - this option is available on the "Grabber" pane of the program preference panel (so it is a "global" feature, not specific to the chosen configuration.) It is OFF by default.
  • If this option is selected: When grabbing a website, URL data will be loaded from disk, if available, rather than loading it from the internet. This feature is intended primarily for resuming a download that was terminated, and not for updating a website previously downloaded.
  • Grabber windows display "Looking for url disk file" in the status message area when the option is selected.
  • This method should not be used with remapping dynamic urls since the file names can not be properly mapped during the update as that information from the first download is not saved. (A future update may provide this ability.)
  • Speed is also improved since pages loaded from disk will not be relinked or remapped if these options are selected in the configuration. (If pages were relinked when the data was originally saved, there is no need to relink them again.) Also, data is not re-saved to disk because it is identical.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.42 (Aug 13, 2010)

  • Batch Downloader: When saving the result of a download (either for grabbing URL source, web archiving or imaging) the desired destination filename is changed if a file by the same name already exists in the download folder. This is currently achieved by appending a unique identifier to the desired filename; other methods will be forthcoming. This is useful because many URLs are either unnamed, renamed the same, or duplicated which resulted in downloads being overwritten or not saved.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.41 (Aug 5, 2010)

  • Preferences: a new preference named "Create Web Archives of all downloaded pages" has been added to the "Grabber" pane of the application Preference window. When this option is selected a Web Archive of the page is created adjacent to the downloaded HTML file.
  • See Webarchive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webarchive) for more information on this type of file.
  • This option is OFF by default, and if selected it applies to every grabber you use.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.40 (Jul 29, 2010)

  • All the following apply to the Batch Downloader:
  • The batch downloader window has been modified to make it easier to choose from the various retrieval options: image, archive or download.
  • Rather than specifying "Image URLs" from a checkbox and selecting the image format in Preferences, you can now simply click one of three buttons: "Image," "Archive" or "Download."
  • When you click "Image" the imaging format is determine by the setting in Preferences.
  • Each button will change its name to "Stop" when clicked so you can stop the operation.
  • The batch download window list has a new column called "Date." The date displayed is either the "Last Modified" or "Date" HTTP header field value or the "Last Visited Date" in Safari's History, depending on where the URLs in the list were obtained.
  • When archiving files the file modification and creation dates are set to the date displayed in the "Date" column. This is useful when you archive your Safari bookmarks because it if they are sorted by date in the Finder they will appear in the order you visited them.
  • A button for importing URLs from Safari's History has been added to the batch Download window (you can also select the action from the menu bar.)
  • The batch download window now displays status strings for imaging and archiving. The status item will be either "YES" or "NO" for success or failure, respectively.
  • The batch downloaded now always auto-redirects if necessary. (it would only previously re-direct if the option to "allow the system software handle redirection" was selected in Preferences.)
  • You can now stop imaging or archiving by clicking the appropriate "Stop" button.
  • More status messages are displayed during Imaging and Archiving for better feedback on progress.
  • A memory leak was fixed in the archiver.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.39 (Jul 26, 2010)

  • Various improvements to the Search window (accessed from the File menu.)
  • Search: A QuickLook document preview window has been added to the Search facility. After a search is conducted and search results are presented in the hierarchical view, single click on an item to open the QuickLook viewer. (On Mac OS X 10.4 the preview will simply be the files icon, since QuickLook is only available on Mac OS X 10.5 and above.)
  • Search: Use the QuickLook window to display the list of words in the current document, sorted alphabetically. This is a method for obtaining a summary of the documents content, taken out of context. (It is the same index used by Spotlight.)
  • Search: The Search window now searches any document type supported by Spotlight, since it uses Spotlight for text extraction.
  • Search: The search query of the Search window is placed into the "Find" clipboard so that you can quickly search for the term in the document itself when it is opened in the creator application, provided that application supports the Find clipboard, such as TextWrangler or XCode. (Double click an item in the search results window to open it in the default application for that type of file.)
  • Bookmarks: If you Command-click an item in the Bookmarks window the item is now displayed inside a WebView window. (See the help tags for the window for more options.)

New in Blue Crab 4.9.9 (Jul 28, 2008)

  • Implemented two new file naming methods for the Batch Download window: Sequential and URL Pathname. The purpose of these methods is to help avoid ambiguity in the names of the disk files.
  • The Sequential method names the downloaded files as "File X" where X is the index of the file in the batch list.
  • The URL Pathname method names the downloaded files as "Folder1-Folder2-...-FolderN-URLFilename" where ""Folder1/Folder2/../FolderN" would be the path component of the URL of the file.
  • And of course there is still the option to name the downloaded file using the same filename as the URL itself. Ambiguity in this case is handled by appending UUID's to files with the same name.
  • Specify your preference using the new option available in the "Behavior" pane of the program's "Preferences..." window, accessible from the "Blue Crab" application menu.

New in Blue Crab 4.9.8 (Jul 14, 2008)

New in Blue Crab 4.9.7 (Jul 9, 2008)

  • All the grabber windows now have a "current browser url" button which when clicked puts the current URL of a supported browser into the starting URL text field. This new button is located adjacent to the UTRL text field, and is labeled with the letter C. (Blue Crab supports the latest version of these browsers: Safari, OmniWeb, Camino and Firefox)
  • The text file importer of the Batch Download window has been enhanced to support more types of text encodings.
  • A new option is available when generating a sitemap, called "mode". The mode determines if the sitemap suffix filter includes or excludes a URL whose suffix is contained by the suffix list. SItemap suffix filters are entered on the "Logs/UA" pane of the configuration editor. This option is set to "Include Suffixes" by default.
  • There is a new option to not remember the list of files when the batch downloader is closed. Select this option on the "Behavior" pane of the program's Preferences window.
