Backblaze Changelog

What's new in Backblaze 8.0.0.520

Jul 7, 2021
  • Performance Boost: As we’ve described in the past, thread count matters, but until today your max threading was set to 30. You now can run up to 100 threads concurrently if your system and network are up to it. From go-kart to highway speeds in one update! It’s like nitrous for uploads.
  • Smarter Gas Pedal: If you’re worried about stressing your motor, we’ve greatly improved our autothrottle, which will keep your bandwidth and system load in mind if you don’t want to.
  • Easier on the Engine: We’ve reduced the client’s load on your HDD or SSD by up to 80% by reconfiguring how reads and writes happen before encryption and upload.
  • A New Coat of Paint: Sometimes it helps to look faster, too, so we updated our brand a touch to keep up with what’s under the hood.

New in Backblaze 6.0.0.298 (Feb 4, 2019)

  • Performance — a 50% Boost:
  • We’ve increased the maximum upload threads to 30, creating speed increases up to 50% (depending on your computer and upload bandwidth). More threads allow more uploads to run in parallel thereby dramatically increasing backup speeds.
  • Efficiency:
  • Logging and system resource usage have been streamlined so Backblaze continues to be nearly invisible on your computer.
  • Network Management:
  • We’re not big fans of data caps here at Backblaze, and one bit of feedback we’ve received over the last year or so was that people were blowing past their ISP’s monthly bandwidth allotment while backing up using their hotspot or mobile device-tethered internet connection. With that in mind, we’ve added a blocklist feature so you can choose to prevent backups from occurring while you are connected to specific Wi-Fi networks of your choosing. Backblaze will still transmit little bits of data (we call them heartbeats) to let us know your computer is still active, but no backups will be transmitted.

New in Backblaze 4.2.0.966 (Aug 26, 2016)

  • Inherit Backup State – we change the terminology for this feature in our previous release, but we have now also added the Inherit Backup State functionality into the client itself. You can find it by opening “Settings” in the Backblaze Control Panel. Read more about this feature on the Inherit Backup State knowledge base article.
  • Exclusions – as indicated in release 4.1, we have given users more access to our exclusions lists, giving advanced users a bit more control over their backups. Additionally, exclusions now work across all attached drives. This resulted in some confusion in the field, so we’ve added more verbiage to the client’s exclusions section to make the exclusions a bit more clear. You can read all about it on our Exclusions Settings knowledge base articles for Mac and Windows.
  • Performance – with the exclusion changes, indexing speeds can be ~100% faster. Lessening resource usage on the computer and improving overall performance.

New in Backblaze 4.1.0.952 (Jun 15, 2016)

  • Improved resilience for data uploads:
  • For B2 Cloud Storage, we built out a highly durable and reliable load balancer infrastructure. In release 4.1 the internal API calls were updated to use this new B2 load balancer set-up. The highly redundant nature of this design will leverage the B2 networking infrastructure to improve connection availability and reliability for both Backblaze Personal Backup and Backblaze Business Backup.
  • Inherit is the new transfer:
  • In another case of changing names, we have renamed the “Transfer Backup State” feature to “Inherit Backup State” beginning in 4.1. The functionality is the same; you can move Backblaze to another system and “Inherit” your backup status on your new computer – without having to reupload your data. This is a time-saving and bandwidth-saving feature when moving your Backblaze backup from one system to another. Please read the Inherit Backup State instructions in our Knowledge Base before you start to get the best results.
  • Retina display improvements on the Mac:
  • Mac users with a Retina display will be seeing Backblaze Personal Backup a little clearer with release 4.1. We updated the graphics so they display better on Retina capable screens.
  • Exclusions:
  • We all know that Backblaze automatically backs up the data on a PC or Mac. By default we exclude certain files from the backup, for example applications and system files. This works fine for about 99% of our customers, but there are some users who want to know more. Until now, the list of files being excluded was buried deep in our code and hidden away from prying eyes. Release 4.1 makes it a little easier for the 1% of you who are curious about which files are being excluded. Check out our knowledge base to learn more about file exclusions.
