New in Pro Tools 2020.11 (Nov 14, 2020)

  • Pro Tools | Carbon:
  • Support for the initial release of Pro Tools | Carbon audio interface. For product information, go to www.avid.com/carbon
  • Dark Theme:
  • Pro Tools has a “Dark” UI Theme in addition to the previous lighter colored look which is now called “Classic”. The “Dark” UI with its modern design, is now the default look for Pro Tools, but the theme can be switched in Pro Tools Preferences > Display based on work environment or personal preference. Note that there is no difference in Pro Tools functionality between the two available UI Themes.
  • Audio to MIDI:
  • We have integrated Melodyne from Celemony into Pro Tools to provide the ability to convert audio to MIDI. Pro Tools analyzes selected audio and converts pitches to MIDI notes and amplitude to velocities. This can be achieved by dragging and dropping an audio clip onto a MIDI or Instrument track, using a new command found in the track menu, or using special clipboard commands in the audio track’s contextual menu(s).
  • Melodyne must be installed and activated for this feature to work.
  • Melodyne Essential:
  • We are now including Melodyne Essentials for all active Pro Tools customers. Read the Licensing Melodyne essentials KB for activation instructions.
  • Space Clips:
  • Space Clips is a new batch command that inserts a user specified amount of space between selected clips on the timeline. This allows you to quickly space out a large number of clips by a desired amount in any time scale.
  • This feature was originally designed to vastly speed up certain game audio workflows that dealt with a huge number of clips, but can also be used in sound design, dialog editing, mastering, sample library creation, and music.
  • Bounce Mix Window:
  • The “Bounce to Disk” window has been replaced by a single “Bounce Mix” window. It is now possible to bounce audio or video file formats from a single window, accessed by a single key command.
  • The entire window is driven by presets. Presets save and restore the parameters in the window, including the mix sources and location options.
  • The Bounce Mix window also offers custom location options, including the ability to bounce to a user definable directory structure relative to the session file, as well as a static location.
  • All of the above improvements have also been applied to the Track Bounce window.
  • Dolby Atmos ADM BWF Export:
  • (Pro Tools Ultimate Only)
  • “Dolby Atmos ADM BWF” has been added as a new exportable file format in the Bounce Mix window. This allows for much quicker deliverable turnarounds with offline bounces directly from Pro Tools. It’s possible to generate new deliverables from a new project, with new metadata, or rework previous ADM files, passing along or changing the previous metadata.
  • QuickTime Export (Public Beta):
  • We are opening up the ability to bounce to MOV files, across all OS’s, without the need to install any additional components. Not all intended functionality has been completed, but we realize the importance of this ability, so we’re sharing our current progress.
  • The new Bounce Mix window has an “MOV (Public Beta)” option in the File Type menu.
  • This allows you to bounce MOV files with the following options:
  • Transcode video to:
  • DNxHD
  • DNxHR
  • Apple ProRes
  • H.264 (VBR and CBR)
  • Include the following audio formats:
  • PCM uncompressed audio.
  • 7.1, 5.1, Stereo, and Mono channel widths
  • Multiple audio stems
  • QuickTime and MXF OP-1a Import:
  • It is now possible to import audio from the following files, across all OS’s, without the need to install any additional components. This adds new support for macOS Catalina and beyond, and it removes the QuickTime installation dependency on Windows for import.
  • The following audio file types and codecs can now be imported on all supported OS’s, in addition to the existing file support. All imported audio will be converted to the current chosen session audio format.
  • .m4a/.m4v/.aac:
  • AAC audio
  • .mov/.mp4:
  • PCM (uncompressed)
  • AAC audio
  • .mxf:
  • OP-1a (audio from a combined audio/video MXF)
  • PCM (uncompressed) audio
  • Master Fader Increase:
  • (Pro Tools Ultimate Only)
  • Pro Tools Ultimate can now create 512 Master Fader Tracks. This is useful in situations where it is important to have plug-in processing at the end of the output stage for each output. Now it is possible to insert limiters when mixing in Dolby Atmos, for each object and bed, just before the signal reaches the final output.
  • AAF Mute:
  • Static track mute settings can now be received in an AAF from Avid Media Composer 2020.9 (and later).
  • Pro Tools can also export static mute settings with an AAF. Media Composer 2020.9 (and later) can import this mute information.
  • Performance Improvements:
  • Offline bounce speed has been improved.
  • Optimization at low buffer sizes:
  • A new setting has been added to the Playback Engine called, “Optimize Performance at Low Buffer Sizes”. This setting applies to the two lowest buffer sizes available.
  • In some cases, this optimization will conflict with certain plug-ins and cause a CPU error. If that occurs, Pro Tools will post a dialog with the suggestion to disable this optimization.

New in Pro Tools 12.2.1 (Sep 29, 2015)

  • Bug Fixes:
  • VCAs in Pro Tools (non-HD):
  • VCA levels are no longer incorrectly coalesced to the mix group when opening a session with VCAs in Pro Tools
  • Session Notes no longer displays "This version of PT does not support VCA masters" when opening a session with VCAs in Pro Tools
  • Music:
  • MIDI Output path selector menus now display track name in addition to the MIDI node (i.e. the name and index of the Virtual Instrument). In the case of a track with multiple MIDI nodes, typical for workflows with VE Pro, track names have a sub-menu to display all MIDI nodes.
  • Fixed scenarios where audio from multi-output Virtual Instruments was not rendered during offline bounce
  • Automatic assignment of the MIDI Output of an Instrument track now reverts to none when removing the currently assigned Virtual Instrument from the track. Previously, Pro Tools would deactivate the route but leave it assigned and other inconsistent behavior would occur moving VIs around Instrument Tracks. Now, the only automatic assignments are to assign automatically to the first MIDI node of the first instrument added to the track, and to automatically set to none when the routed instrument is removed from the track.
  • Velocity and Transpose Real Time Properties correctly filter incoming MIDI data
  • MIDI Output path is remembered when moving a Virtual Instrument to another insert slot on an Instrument Track
  • Playback starts correctly from the Play Start Marker after using the grabber tool to move the timeline selection in Dynamic Transport mode
  • Fixed AAE error -9013 loading East West Play
  • Broadcast:
  • Pro Tools Import Settings in Interplay Administrator are reflected in the Pro Tools Dashboard and Import Session Data dialogs
  • Renaming clip and file name before exporting to AAF or Interplay will no longer result in offline in Media Composer.
  • Fixed all localized strings for the Interplay error "It is already checked out by Administrator on..."
  • Automation:
  • Special-cased automation write to warnings to alleviate accidental overwriting of automation on all or most of the timeline:
  • When users start playback without a timeline selection, make an edit selection during playback in hopes of writing automation to the new selection, then use Write to Start, Write to Selected, or Write to End, we will always end the pass with the respective automation warnings even if the preference to suppress warnings is enabled.
  • The do-to-selected modifier for changing track view to an automated parameter now applies to Plug-ins. For tracks within a track selection that have the same insert in the same slot with the same parameter automated, Shift+Ctrl+Opt+Cmd+Click (Mac) or Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Win+Click (Win) on that parameter in a plug-in GUI will set those track’s views to the clicked parameter.
  • Changes made to tracks in Auto Read when all automation is suspended no longer reset to previous values when turning off suspend

  • Clips moved on to the tops or tails of other clips are properly overlaid
  • Corrected the "remove" language to the proper "delete" language in the dialog that follows attempting to Delete a file by using the Clear command from the clips list

  • Whole File Clips that are not used on a track but are referred to by the sub clips used on that track are now correctly imported when using Import Session Data
  • Attempting to delete an audio file from "Project Browser" now properly checks if sub-clips are used in the session
  • File sizes in Workspace browser are now calculated correctly
  • Using the arrow keys to navigate up and down in the workspace no longer cycles from bottom to top or top to bottom
  • AAX:
  • ModDelay 3 properly reads ModDelay 2 presets when running a Core Audio (Mac) or ASIO/WASAPI (Win) playback engine, fixing the new ModDelay 2 to ModDelay 3 compatibility introduced in Pro Tools 12.0 for all users
  • Fixed cases where plug-ins in Pro Tools 12.2 would load slowly on first instantiation after install

  • Toggling active state of a mix group no longer causes solos to link when using "shift-S"
  • Control Surfaces:
  • Solo Mode (SIP, AFL, PFL) and Solo Latch Mode (Latch, X-OR, Momentary) are now available as EUCON soft keys

  • Note that 9092, 9093 and 9094 errors can still occur when a system is being run under demanding loads, including small buffer settings on non-DSP based systems. In these cases, enabling Playback Error Suppression can allow you to continue, at the possible expense of sound quality. There are also known cases of plug-ins causing these types of errors. You can determine if a plug-in is at fault by removing plug-ins one type at a time until the problem goes away. Then create a new session with just that plug-in to see if the errors occur there. If they do, please report this to Avid and also to the manufacturer of the plug-in. Reporting to both will help get the problem solved more quickly.

  • If you install the Pro Tools Instrument Expansion Pack (PTIEP) before installing Pro Tools on a system running Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion), no plug-ins will appear in the Pro Tools inserts menu. To avoid this, install Pro Tools first, then install the PTIEP. If you installed the PTIEP first, you must uninstall both Pro Tools and the PTIEP, then reinstall Pro Tools first, followed by the PTIEP.
  • The Pro Tools 10.0.1 installer correctly moves previously installed Pro Tools Instrument Expansion Pack (PTIEP) content to the new Applications/Avid folder instead of deleting it. (PTSW-153599)
