autoEdit2 is an open source project designed to work with the IBM Speech to Text service, while also incorporating two other experimental transcription systems that work in offline mode (Gentle and pocketsphinx).

The utility offers you the possibility to transcribe both audio and video files and comes with support for multiple languages, such as English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Arabic, Brazilian or Chinese.

Right off the bat, autoEdit2 prompts the user for the IBM Watson Speech to Text service credentials (username and password). Note that IBM provides a 30 days trial for the service, but you need to register for an IBM Bluemix account free of charge.

The next step is to navigate to the IBM Bluemix Dashboard in your default web browser and create a new application service based on the Speech to Text service (you will be able to find it in the catalog). Once the process is complete, just open the service credentials and extract the information you need.

autoEdit2 is able to save the IBM STT username and password between sessions, so you will have to go through this only once. On the other hand, autoEdit2 will let you know if the information is not correct when you try to use the service for a transcription.

Working with the autoEdit2 application proves to be rather intuitive: you can create a new transcription by loading a media file and selecting the transcription system you want to use. Of course, you can also add small descriptions for each entry.

Once a transcription is complete, you get to review the text content, as well as playback the video and jump to different sections while in highlight mode. autoEdit2 also offers you the possibility to edit the transcription text and correct any errors.

The autoEdit2 application also comes with a paperedits function where you get access to all your previous transcriptions. You can combine video sequences any way you like and export the data to an EDL (edit decision list) or EDL JSON file.

Bottom line, autoEdit2 offers you the possibility to generate transcriptions for your video or audio files and enables you to edit their content based on the text content. This way, you can edit interviews or projects that include a story line a lot faster.

The project edits can be exported to EDL files, you can extract the captions as SRT files, or save the entire transcription in plain text documents. Developers can also export the full transcription to JSON or to HTML5 media files.
