Create bootable Linux USB drives by selecting and downloading one of numerous supported distributions or loading your own ISO file. #Bootable USB #Install Linux #Linux USB #Linux #Bootable #USB
You can find a Linux distribution that works on pretty much any device, and the first step in the installation process is usually to create a bootable USB. There are a few apps that let you complete this operation on a Mac, one of them being UNetbootin.
This is an incredibly simple and intuitive utility that requires you to go through a few straightforward steps in order to prepare your bootable USB. It can download various Linux distributions automatically or install them from your own ISO files.
Before anything else, make sure your USB drive is connected before launching UNetbootin. If the device is detected, you can then select one of the numerous Linux distributions the app can download automatically. A short description of the OS is also provided.
If you've already downloaded a disk image of the distro you want to install, go ahead and select the ISO. If installing Ubuntu, you can also specify how much space should be reserved for user files.
Once you've configured the wizard, there's really nothing else to do but wait for the operation to be finished. The utility will first download the necessary files (unless installing from an ISO), then extract and copy them to your drive, before finally installing the bootloader.
After the process is completed, you can eject your drive and install the Linux distribution you've selected on any device. If deploying on a Mac, just restart and hold down the Option (⌥) key to bring up the Boot Selection window, then boot from the drive to start the installation process.
UNetbootin does a great job of keeping things simple. While configuring and troubleshooting various Linux distros is still a somewhat grueling process, installing them doesn't have to be, and with this utility, you can create a bootable USB in no time.
