It's rare to come across an app that is so well-thought-out and useful that you can integrate it into your workflow instantly, with almost no adjustment period. Well, I'm glad to say that Unclutter is one of them.
In a nutshell, this app creates a sort-of drawer that can be accessed from the top of your screen. Here, you can place important files, write and store notes, as well as manage and save clipboard entries. It is incredibly intuitive, requiring almost no time at all for users to get accustomed to its inner workings.
The app's standout feature lets you store files you use frequently, or those you will need for multiple operations, in an accessible space, with a simple drag and drop action. From here, you can then drag them anywhere else, or even open them directly.
By default, these files are stored in a secure location on your Mac. You can move them to another folder to enable Spotlight indexing, and even use a cloud storage directory (such as your Dropbox folder) to sync them between devices.
Opening TextEdit or any other text editor just to write down a quick memo is far from an ideal solution, and you then have to waste time saving it to a file as well. With Unclutter, you can just bring down the panel, write or paste what you need, and then get back to your work.
The text editor is as simple as they get, but no one is planning to use an app like this to write novels anyway. It's essentially a drop-down sticky note, and it comes with a useful search function for finding whatever you need.
The app remembers all text that has been copied to the clipboard, allowing you to retrieve anything you might have come across earlier. Particularly useful clippings can even be favorited, and you can edit them before copying them again.
If a certain app contains potentially sensitive text that you may not want to be stored anywhere, Unclutter can conceal this data and avoid saving it on the disk. If you then remove this restriction, previously-saved clips from that app will again be visible.
Unclutter doesn't seem to bring any new or eye-catching features to the table, but what makes it special is just how well everything is put together. You can literally start taking advantage of it in just a few seconds, and it does wonders for your productivity.
What's new in Unclutter 2.2.8:
- Fixed: A rare bug causing panels' widths reset on Unclutter relaunch or Mac sleep/wake up.
- Improved: Unclutter Files support for non-latin characters in files & folders names.
