CronniX is a a graphical user interface for the popular task scheduling cron Unix program which will allow you to both delay or schedule the launch of certain applications or the execution of specific scripts (AppleScript support built-in).
cron, the Unix program, is launched at start up and checks every minute if the contrab (the configuration file for cron) contains tasks that need to be performed. The tool allows you to have a crontab file for the system and one for each system user.
CronniX is a simple and open source macOS application that allows you to add tasks to each of those two crontab configuration files.
The CronniX app also enables you to effortlessly view the currently selected crontab and switch to another via the app’s top toolbar.
To add new tasks to your crontab simply press the "New" button and input your task scheduling command. Through the Schedule panel you can choose to launch the command at a certain time, on specific days of the week, as well as set the action to repeat at certain time intervals.
Moreover, CronniX also comes with inbuilt support for drag and drop actions: simply drop the app or script you want to schedule on top of the main window (in a blank area) and the app will automatically create a new cron task which you can edit later.
To test the outcome of your tasks you can use the ’Run now’ command, but keep in mind that it only works for the current user’s crontab (using sudo, for example, will have no effect if you are not logged in as root).
As an added bonus, CronniX offers you the possibility to export your settings to a .crontab file, which can be easily restored after a system install.
In a nutshell, if you want to make your life easier while scheduling tasks using the command-line based cron UNIX utility, CronniX is the app you're looking for.
Once installed on your Mac, CronniX will make it possible to rapidly create custom cron configurations, easy to backup and restore at any given time.
