Alpus offers you the possibility to quickly run queries in multiple dictionaries, even though you don’t have access to the internet. Moreover, you also get to import ZIM or MediaWiki files and browse Wikipedia posts offline.

Right off the bat, Alpus comes with support for downloading the Computing Dictionary, WordNet, World Factbook, and the Moby Thesaurus via the app’s user interface. The utility will automatically install each archive, and you get to see the total number of available entries.

At the same time, Alpus also allows you to import dictionaries by pointing out the respective archive on your drive, the direct URL, or by simply pasting the text. Alpus is able to handle StarDict, DSL, XDXF, ZIM, or MediaWiki files.

Note that Alpus allows you to see extensive details about each dictionary and even allows you to modify its properties. If you don’t want to use a database with your current profile, Alpus allows you to either disable it or remove it altogether.

Alpus comes with a powerful search tool that can handle diacritics, punctuation, or different cases, but can also match results phonetically. Note that you get to see the results available in all resources, and view additional details about terms included in the explanation within pop-up windows.

The Alpus app can also handle wildcard and fuzzy search, features an in-page translator tool, comes with history and bookmarks functions, and allows you to export the results to a file.

Alpus sports different applets that can further improve your experience: a Text Viewer, a Vocabulary Exerciser, and an MP3 Player.

Bottom line, Alpus offers you the possibility to create an extensive database that includes various dictionaries, but also Wikipedia database dumps.

All the configuration details are accessible through consequent menus, which keeps the user interface clean, but can also prove to be slightly confusing until you learn your way around.
