Before OS X 10.11 El Capitan, macOS users had a simple and straightforward way of checking and repairing user permissions with the help of the Disk Utility application.

After the release of El Capitan, the repair permissions functionality has been removed from Disk Utility because the new System Integrity Protection (SIP) macOS feature does not allow the alteration of system file permissions.

Luckily, according to the "Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder" support note on Apple's support website, users can now go through an eight-step procedure to repair permissions for any folder on their Mac.

Unfortunately, to follow that procedure, you will have to both use the Terminal app and run an undocumented command (i.e., diskutil resetUserPermissions) designed to reset the files permissions on a folder of your choice.

If you are not accustomed to using the Terminal and running command-line tools, you can utilize the GUI-based RepairHomePermissions, which will guide through the entire procedure of resetting the disk permissions for your home folder.

If you need a reason for verifying and repairing the home folder's permissions,  you should know that it will fix a wide assortment of issues, from your Mac running very slowly to iTunes not being able to sync.

It also fixes a problem lots of macOS users have encountered, that of not being able to save your work because of the file your working on is locked, or you don't have the needed permissions.

Moreover, to start resetting the home folder permissions, you first have to go through the procedure detailed at the top of the app's window.

When the RepairHomePermissions app is done repairing permissions, it will display the "User permissions have been reset" in the text area under the Repair Permissions button.

If you need extra information on how to use the RepairHomePermissions, you can get all the info you need from the Introducing RepairHomePermissions.pdf document.

On the whole, RepairHomePermissions is the perfect app to have on your Mac if you ever need to fix a wide range of issues stemming from the wrong permissions on files in your home folder.
