Password managers are pretty much essential nowadays. There are plenty of options out there, but if you want a cross-platform solution that syncs your data between devices, you generally have to pay. Generally, but not always.

Bitwarden is an open-source project aiming to provide free password management for all desktop and mobile platforms, as well as browsers. It's not as feature-packed as some of its paid competitors, and the UI is somewhat outdated, but you can use it on all your devices free of charge.

The desktop app is very straightforward. The UI consists of three panels: one for folders, one for items, and one for displaying item info. You can organize passwords, cards, and notes into folders, search for content, and edit info in the right-hand panel.

Bitwarden comes with a password generator, and you can create shareable links with expiration dates. Your vault can be configured to lock automatically after a certain amount of time, and the app can be minimized to the menu bar for better accessibility.

The App Store version comes with the Safari extension built-in, and it is the only way to get the add-on. If you install Bitwarden from GitHub, you will only be able to use it with Chrome or Firefox. It's also worth noting that some Monterey users have reported issues with the Safari extension not showing up after installing from the App Store.

As far as the add-on's functionality is concerned, it offers pretty much everything you get in the desktop app, including autofill for password fields. The UI is a bit crowded, however, and it looks pretty outdated in Safari.

While a Premium plan is available, it is not essential by any means. It just offers some optional features that the vast majority of users won't need. When you consider that Bitwarden is available for every major platform out there, and you can use it on any number of devices for free, it's hard not to recommend it.

For users who want to start using more secure passwords, Bitwarden is a great option. It has all the features most users will need, it works on any device, and the fact that it's open-source should give you some peace of mind regarding how your data is handled.
