Open source and Electron-based app with support for multimedia keys designed to help you view YouTube videos from your Mac's menu bar. #YouTube client #YouTube menulet #Browse YouTube #YouTube #Browse #View
YouTube is the most popular video sharing platform of the moment, and until it is dethroned, it is also the go-to service when you need to view the latest video released by your favorite singer or to listen to your custom list of best pop songs of the '90s.
MenuTube is a user-friendly Electron-based macOS app which resides in your Mac's status bar and gives you access to a mobile version of YouTube, with almost all the bells and whistles.
Moreover, the MenuTube app makes it a breeze to browse through the YouTube home page and use its search engine to pinpoint any video you want to watch. Unfortunately, it will not allow you to paste any text in the search field or to open a custom YouTube link, which means that you will not be able to play unlisted content.
However, MenuTube does come with support for logging in using your YouTube account, as well as browsing the Trending tab to quickly going through the most popular videos of the moment.
During our tests, MenuTube, together with its Helper processes, took up to 25% of a CPU core's resources and under 200 MB of RAM. This makes it an excellent alternative to a resource-hogging web browser for viewing a YouTube video or listening to a podcast in the background while working on other tasks.
MenuTube's main window can be set up to always stay on top, and to be resizable a draggable via the app's Preferences window which can be opened by clicking on the sandwich menu at the top.
MenuTube also comes with support for using the media keys on your Mac's keyboard to play and pause the currently playing video, as well as for jumping forward and backward, and for toggling the window using the pre-defined ⌘ + ⌥ + Y global hotkey.
Sadly, MenuTube will not remember where you left off and will take you back to YouTube's homepage the next time you open it. What’s more, once hidden, the playing window will not remember its position and will reappear under the menu bar, and the playback will stop after opening the preferences window.
All things considered, MenuTube is an unobtrusive and easy to use YouTube client for your Mac's menu bar, which also comes with the added advantage of a couple of extra features like smaller resource needs and support for media keys when compared to the YouTube website opened in a web browser.
Nevertheless, it still needs a little polishing around the corners and a couple of bug fixes in the future to make sure that everything is in good order and works as advertised.
