Open source utility created to help you chat with your friends, share files and publish documents via a cryptographically-secure platform. #Encrypt message #Sign message #Verify message #Encrypt #Sign #Decrypt
Whether you are a hardened security professional or the average Joe who surfs around the web in his spare time, there's little to no chance you haven't heard of why using encryption to communicate online is a good idea.
This being said, you have multiple choices when it comes to encrypting the messages you send using the Internet, but the most popular is PGP, with Werner Koch's GnuPG (short for GNU Privacy Guard) suite of tools ready to help you start encrypting anything from instant messages to e-mails.
There is a problem with PGP though: if you're not an advanced computer user with at least some basic cryptography knowledge, it's quite hard to get the hang of it.
And this is where Keybase, an open source social network-like platform built on top of a cryptographically-secure filesystem, comes in to help you chat with other users via an end-to-end encrypted chat system, and share files using its built-in distributed filesystem featuring end-to-end encryption and a global namespace.
Once installed on your Mac, Keybase will start by displaying your full profile and allowing you to easily access the list of people you follow. Clicking the top left search button, you can find more people to add to your list, and open a private or public folder for easy sharing of files.
With the help of Keybase's status bar menu, you can open your public and private folders, as well as access the app's Help and Documentation website.
After starting a chat via Keybase with one of your contacts, you can also share files using the app's end-to-end encryption-based KBFS filesystem.
Moreover, at the moment, Keybase allows you to send text messages of up to 4000 characters, emojis and easy to add attachments via the bottom right button, under the chat input field.
Given the fact that Keybase is also multi-platform and available on today's most popular operating systems, from macOS, Windows, and Linux, to mobile platforms such as iOS and Android, there's very little left to ask for when it comes to finding a tool to keep your data secure.
Taking all of the above into consideration and its flawless performance during our tests, Keybase is the perfect app to install on your Mac if you need end-to-end chat and file sharing on a daily basis.
