Effortlessly create customized Chrome-based site-specific browsers (SSBs) that can run like native macOS applications on your Mac's desktop. #Create SSB #Create site-specific browser #Create web app #SSB #Web app #Browser
Epichrome is an application that allows you to create site-specific browsers that are launched as regular Mac apps and are designed specifically for a certain web page. It is very intuitive, and even complete novices should have no problems building SSBs in no time.
The utility is made up of two components: a Mac application that is used to create the actual SSBs and a Google Chrome extension, Epichrome Helper, that allows you to configure the newly created app.
Before anything else, you need to make sure Google Chrome is installed on your system, as the created SSBs will be impossible to launch otherwise. They are, however, full Mac apps and use separate Chrome profiles, enabling you to customize each of them individually.
When launching the Epichrome app, you are presented with a wizard that consists of a small number of steps. You need to select the app’s location, name it, choose the default URL and, optionally, provide a custom icon.
Moreover, you can determine which app style the SSB should use. It can either be displayed as a simple app window, without menus and tabs, or as a full browser window. You can also switch between these two layouts at any time after the app is created with predefined hotkeys.
After the app is created, it can be customized by accessing the Epichrome Helper extension’s options menu. You can add a complex set of rules that determine how various websites are handled so that certain web pages are opened in the app while others are launched in your default browser.
The apps created with Epichrome are self-updating, and this process should take place automatically once Google Chrome has been updated or a new version of Epichrome is installed on your system. However, the latter requires Spotlight indexing to be enabled on your Mac.
In short, Epichrome is a well-designed app that allows you to create site-specific browsers by following a few easy steps. They are launched as native Mac apps, can be configured to open only certain web pages and have the capability to update themselves automatically.
