Large photos collections can take a considerable amount of storage space, which can be put to better use. PhotoShrinkr is a small yet efficient OS X utility designed to help you reduce the size of your JPG files without losing on the image quality.

The PhotoShrinkr application comes with a reasonably intuitive workflow: you can import the images you want to shrink via the Finder Open menu or with a simple drag and drop on top of the main window, and the app takes care of the rest.

By default, the optimized files will be sent to the Pictures folder, but you get to quickly change the output location via the Preferences window. The same area allows you to enable the logging function, or to toggle the audio notification that lets you know the processing is done.

When the optimization is over, PhotoShrinkr is also able to show you the files in the containing Finder window. You can easily set them apart because PhotoShrinkr also adds the “optimized” prefix to the file name.

Within the PhotoShrinkr main window you can see the original file size, the size after the file has been optimized, how much space has been saved expressed in percents, and how long it took. In the bottom area of the window you can see how much space has been saved in total.

Take into consideration that you will not only gain storage space but also time, since your image files will both load and transfer faster. However, since PhotoShrinkr is compressing the JPG files, the image quality will not be visibly modified.
