If you are a gamer, at some point, you have probably dreamed of building your own games and making a living from selling your creations. However, game design is a lot more difficult that it may seem at first glance, and having to spend many years learning to code can be discouraging.
Buildbox is an intuitive macOS app created with novices in mind, as it simplifies the game development process, making it accessible even to beginners. It should be noted, however, that this tool cannot be used to design artwork from scratch, as original content has to be created separately or obtained from other sources.
Assuming you are new to the game development scene, even a utility as simple as this could prove to be challenging, as learning through trial and error can be frustrating and time-consuming.
Buildbox goes beyond simply providing extensive documentation. Detailed video tutorials go through every step of the game creation process, making things much simpler than they otherwise would be.
Buildbox prefers to keep things simple when it comes to inserting new objects to be used in the assembly process. Assuming you have prepared the necessary artwork beforehand, you can drag items and drop them into the scene editor.
The application then brings up an overlay that allows you to specify whether the inserted file represents a background, object, character or power-up.
Many presets are provided by Buildbox, each suitable for various types of games, and you can test them on several screen sizes, to get an idea of what the finished product would look like on certain devices.
The completed game can be exported to multiple popular platforms, complete with in-app purchases or ads, should you wish to monetize it.
Buildbox is a suitable application for users taking their first steps in the game development business. It is easy-to-use, while offering an extensive set of tools and providing comprehensive instructions.
What's new in Buildbox 3.5.7:
- Fixed:
- Fixed a compile bug where using a reserved folder name was preventing submission to Apple
- URL Buttons now function on all platforms when the full address is given. If you leave out elements of the address, www or http for example, we do our best to fill those in for you, but we don’t guarantee that. So please fully fill out your address fields, example: https://www.google.com/
- Fixed situations where certain Pinned Attributes were not showing on the attributes panel, maintaining their changed values, or capable of being pinned in the first place. Pinning an attribute on a node allows individual instances of your object to have different values from other individual instances of the same object. Meaning that changes to the parent should not propagate to the children.
