.DMG files, for downloads?
This comment is not for reviewing VLC Media Player. It\'s for asking why the download files, except for the one for the source code, are all .DMG files and how to perform an installation with such a file.
I downloaded the one for \"Softpedia Secure Download (US) [DMG]\", but have never seen or heard of these types of files before, but opened the file using 7-Zip and it shows four files named 0.ddm, 1.Apple_partition_map, 2.hfs (approx. 161 MB), and 3.free. I learned about being able to open these types of files with 7-Zip when doing a Web search to try to find out what these files are.
The main page for VLC Media Player says the download file is of \"Universal Binary\" format, but I don\'t see what Apple has to do with Windows and certainly don\'t wish for the media player installation to take up over 161 MB of hard disk space.
videolan.org and download.cnet.com provide .exe downloads of approx. 19 MB.
But it\'d still be of interest to know what these .dmg files are used for and why people should or might prefer to use this kind of file for installing VLC Media Player, instead of using a .exe installer download for Windows.
Is there a difference in terms of having the complete media player, or only a part of it with the 19 MB .exe installers?
