I had a MacBook stolen, meaning that all my music was only on my iPod. I'd heard that if you just plugged an old iPod into a new Mac, connecting with iTunes, it would wipe the iPod with the empty new iTunes library. After months of prevaricating, I just bit the bullet and bought the Senuti package, it seems to have worked a treat.
Beware that the free trial version only covers 1,000 songs. I ran a trial and that worked, so I bought (USD18) the full version. It's dragging all my music onto my laptop as I type. I also had downloaded a couple of albums from the web direct onto my new Mac's iTunes, and I was able to drag and drop those into my iPod no problem once I'd connected it.
MAKE SURE that you check the Manually Manage Music box on the iPod options in iTunes - details how to do that are on the Editor's review here, I think. Otherwise, I think, it will wipe your iPod clean. I think the thing to be VERY wary of is agreeing anything to do with 'Syncing' your iPod and the new Mac at any point.
