The fact is, for most users, OpenOffice.org is more than enough. It is NOT a clone of Microsoft Office, in spite of all the comparisons made to it. While it imports MS Office files, it does not always get the formatting exactly like MS Office. If your MS Office files make extensive use of macros, you'll have to do some editing of the macros to make them work in OpenOffice.
If you are a business that is looking to save a great deal on your technology costs, OpenOffice.org is one of the best solutions you can use. No licensing fees of any kind. A major technology company (Sun Microsystems) and thousands of volunteer programmers behind the project. A wealth of free online support. Quick bug fixes and updates. Multi-OS capability (Windows, Mac, Unix-type).
Before you spend money on MS Office or try to break the law by getting a pirated copy of MS Office (not recommended), check out OpenOffice.org and see if it will do what you need it to do. The modules offered in OOo are very powerful, including Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, and Database applications.
I'd go as far as to say that as far as the Word Processing and Database modules go, it's *better* than Microsoft Office. The Spreadsheet module is not far behind Excel, and the Presentation module equals PowerPoint. I think Inkscape is a better drawing program than Ooo Draw. (Inkscape is also free, and as good as Adobe Illustrator in my opinion.) |
