I agree with Siava, My Experience of OOo is fair but not excellent.

OOo is good just for doing very basic things. But when come to handling complex the things many times I have seen OOo has crashed & attempts to retrieve the files.

GUI is very old fationed & matches with MS office 2003 but not as easy & comfortable as MS office 2007

Calc - 1) Cannot handle large amout of data especially with the formulae
    2) Do not have many common formulae support (e.g IFERROR)
    3) In data filter OOo can filter out only 1 item at a time , unlike MS Office 2007 which offers a checkbox for filtering
    4) In general overall Calc runs very slow & not comfortable to work with as compared to MS office 2007
    5) Chart options / Pivote table are too less sophisticated

Impress - 1) Animations run very poorly
    2) Animations / 3D options are far less sophisticated as compared to powerpoint
    3) Fonts go weird & changes their size & positions with MS Powerpoint even with compatible fonts like Arial / Verdana / Times New Roman etc.
    4) Create Album option is not there ... Similar extention exist but is very poor in performance.
    5) Basic operations on images like change the colour tone / crop / resize are difficult to do.

So I will Recommend OOo use for just very basic things if MS Office is not affordable, but cannot advocate to rely on OOo.

Openoffice the best alternative to M$ Office.

I've been using this product for more than two years and I got no problem with it.

If you want to save money go for OpenOffice. Its free!

The fact is, for most users, OpenOffice.org is more than enough. It is NOT a clone of Microsoft Office, in spite of all the comparisons made to it. While it imports MS Office files, it does not always get the formatting exactly like MS Office. If your MS Office files make extensive use of macros, you'll have to do some editing of the macros to make them work in OpenOffice.

If you are a business that is looking to save a great deal on your technology costs, OpenOffice.org is one of the best solutions you can use. No licensing fees of any kind. A major technology company (Sun Microsystems) and thousands of volunteer programmers behind the project. A wealth of free online support. Quick bug fixes and updates. Multi-OS capability (Windows, Mac, Unix-type).

Before you spend money on MS Office or try to break the law by getting a pirated copy of MS Office (not recommended), check out OpenOffice.org and see if it will do what you need it to do. The modules offered in OOo are very powerful, including Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, and Database applications.

I'd go as far as to say that as far as the Word Processing and Database modules go, it's *better* than Microsoft Office. The Spreadsheet module is not far behind Excel, and the Presentation module equals PowerPoint. I think Inkscape is a better drawing program than Ooo Draw. (Inkscape is also free, and as good as Adobe Illustrator in my opinion.)

I have read a lot in favour of oOffcie. But in reality: It works BETTER under Windows then under Linux, It is too slow in comparison to MS Office, it works POOR with large volumes of data (i.e. handling spreadseets with tens of thousands of rows), it can not do some things with data which Excel can. So, for simple tasks it is sutable but for rather complicated ones it is NOT SUTABLE AT ALL!!! In such areas it can not compete with MS undoubtedly !!! Why these limitations of the product are hidden? I would be fair to urge possible users about them!
