Just echoing what akakhorm has said - you need to follow the instructions first posted by andreamer and you should be fine. Even if the very words terminal and scripts make you run for the exit - don't worry, you can do it, really. This involves launching Terminal (which you will find in 'Applications' then 'Utilities' - when you launch it you will have a terminal window into which you just type each line as per andreamer's instructions (e.g. type cd /usr then hit return - then type sudo mkdir local and hit return - and so on... Of note, you will be asked for the password to your Mac at that point and then be given a standard warning about making changes to your computer, etc, which you need to ok. Then just carry on line by line. All you are doing is making the directories that are needed as part of the installation process.

You need to do this BEFORE you try and install the programme.

So, for example... download the file (e.g. MacFLAC-2.1.2.dmg.gz)
Double-click it and you will then have MacFLAC-2.1.2.dmg
    Drag it to your desktop
Make sure at this point you have created the directories as per andreamer's instructions
Launch it from your desktop and follow the instructions - I got a lot of applescript errors reported on the summary screen, but the programme worked fine and I was able to convert from Flac quickly and easily.

Janky! Doesn't work on my pro... DL'd the .dmg.gz file, drug that to desktop, created a folder called "MacFLAC" and dropped the dmg.gz into the folder. Dbl clicked, then dbl clicked the .dmg and :*(

It says it wants to install binaries, I tell it, "Sure! Go ahead little pal," then it coughs up the error mentioned below.

I'm relatively new to Mac, so I'm sure my own n00bish-ness could be killing me here : (

    Any help appreciated!

i had to follow jim's instruction to make it work

(Hey - stop launching it from the DMG - and it can install the binaries.
Drag it to your desktop (give it a folder of its own), and THEN launch it.)

    tnx jim

I had this on my old Mac and it worked great. I struggled a bit when I downloaded a fresh copy on my new Mac, got the /usr/local issues. Using the instructions below to get the binaries installed fixed everything, I'm back in business.

When I try to install on 10.5.6 it fails to install the flac binaries. It gives me the error: ls/ /usr/local: No such file or directory (1)
I saw the previous post says the author went into the Terminal and input some commands. However, I'm absolutely not a programmer and I have no idea what the Terminal even is. I wonder if there's a simple way for the lay person to get around this problem. If not, will Andreamer's Terminal work solve the problem on my OS too?

Works about 20% of the time on Leopard 10.5.4.

Various Applescript errors pop up or gear just keeps on turning and nothing happens.

MacFLAC 2.1.2. for on a MAC 0SX it did not work.
I cannot rate it as it did not open my flac files as it did not install correctly, missing directories.
The terminal info above is just too complicated, is there a step by step solution.

This software was working great until I upgraded to Mac OSX 10.4.11 from 10.3.9, then I was getting a no such directory message.

I tried the Terminal suggestion above to no avail. Then I downloaded FLAC tools for OS X via a link on http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html (specifically the dmg package) and did the install. Now MacFLAC is working fine.

After installing FLAC Installer 1.1.2 from versiontracker ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30100 ), MacFLAC works great! There is no need to go into Terminal or create any other directories this way. Just install FLAC Installer, then install MacFLAC and you're in business.

This program will decode and encode FLAC files on Mac beautifully -- once you get it installed! Unfortunately, that's a challenge, because it wants to put its binaries in /usr/local/bin, and my MacOS 10.4.7 installation did not even have a /usr/local/ directory. Modifying instructions I found elsewhere on the web, I had to go into Terminal and do this:

    cd /usr
    sudo mkdir local
    cd local
    sudo mkdir bin
    sudo mkdir lib

After all that I was able to doubleclick the Flac icon and it installed fine and let me decode my files.
