Yes, it will mess up your Microsoft Office documents. However, if your end product will be e.g. a PDF file, in other words, you only need to use the tools included in LibreOffice to create it, then it is convenient and safe to use.

I haven't encountered any major problems so far, in fact, I had less problems with it than with Microsoft Office. As for the debate whether to choose LibreOffice over OpenOffice: its mainly a matter of taste IMHO.

As one blog says: "you prefer LibreOffice over (Apache) OpenOffice because
    (1) It has a better open source license.
    (2) It has more community support.
    (3) It is more rapidly developing and releasing updates".

Also you need to know that "OpenOffice might have had a greater focus on MS Office document compatibility, while LibreOffice has focused on advancing features".

I use LibreOffice (LO) almost every day. I have been using LO almost from its launch. LO is full featured

Okay .. LO is not perfect. There are still many bugs and compatibility issues that should be corrected.

But at least I know that until now LO is still improving with a rapid release cycle.

The German Government was right. Open Source software is better. And LibreOffice is the best of those.

I've been using L.O. for a little while now in working on EPUB preparation. I realize that's not what all people use it for. But it does a good job of bringing in documents (usually prepped MS Office) and allowing a clean up and export to (X)HTML or straight to EPUB (through a plugin) that speeds up my work quite a bit. The style system is a little glitchy and funky, and I'd prefer a better range of unit choices (pt, pp, em, px, etc.) but that would just be extra.

For my meager needs it is a breath of relief and is more stable than OpenOffice.

In Lion on my iMac the software runs very smooth (of course) and I honor the guys who build this nice peace of free software! And I also honor them for their dedication so bugs got solved. Their language packets are very good (at least mine which is Dutch).

Their 'Feedback & Webpage' are also very supporting the user. Sometimes better then a Microsoft software packet ;)
No way that you'll download the wrong version for your Mac. Which is huge since they support still PPC and 10.4!

    1. Lightning fast. Although it has some weird default settings, bumping up the memory cache, reducing the number of steps and increasing object memory will allow it to open in under 3 seconds on a standard 7200rpm drive.
    2. It's free, unlike SOME office suites...
    3. It is (mostly) compatible with MS Office, and it's superior non virus filled ActiveX free ODF format is much better.
    4. It will do virtually everything you need it to do.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice look and behave the same regardless of platform (Linux, Mac, or Windows). This makes it much easier for cross-platform users, or those who are switching platforms, to continue working without interruption.

By contrast, there is obviously no Linux version of MSO, and the Mac and Windows versions are quite dissimilar in some respects.

LibreOffice 3.5 and 3.6 work like a charm with Mountain Lion, although you need to tweak your security settings in order to get along with GateKeeper. See the tutorial : http://www.italovignoli.org/2012/08/libreoffice-and-mountain-lion-macos-x-10-8/

Openoffice is effectively dead ofter Oracle bought Sun -- all the developers moved to LibreOffice , and, assuming you care about future enhancements and compatibility Libreoffice is the way to go now. I used to use NeoOffice when it was the only native port of OpenOffice for OSX, but since LibreOffice has a maintained OSX port I just moved to LO.

I am on OSX 10.7.4, LO 3.5.4 and all works fine for me.
