Kismet is very handy application suitable for 802.11 wireless network detection, but it can also be used as a sniffer, as well as an intrusion detection system.. #Wireless sniffer #Wireless network detector #Intrusion detection #Detect #Sniff #Sniffer
The only requirement is that your wireless card comes with support for the RAW monitoring mode. Using Kismet's extendable plugin architecture, you can easily include additional protocols to be decoded.
Kismet can be used to quickly find networks and collect packets, allowing it to easily detect hidden networks. In order to configure your wireless card for the monitoring mode, you must provide Kismet with root access.
In the channel list you can easily control the patterns and channels included in kismet's capture sources. The default channels are used only when channel lists aren't provided by the driver.
All channels can be specified as IEEE frequencies or channels. Individual channels can easily be added you that the application can spend more time on them.
Kismet also integrates with GPS devices in order to provide unique coordinates for the detected networks. These coordinates can be logged to the pcap file.
Also noteworthy is the fact Kismet supports basic filtering, so network can be quickly excluded from tracking or general logging.
Kismet provides DS functionality, including an IDS for layer attacks. The application can also integrate with other tools in order to provide additional functions.
Kismet's user interface is similar to most curses applications, and it even includes mouse support.
Kismet includes a drone service designed to turn the application into a distributed IDS system. Drones support all capture methods, but can also capture wireless data and forward it to a server over a secondary connection.
How to install and run: Unarchive, open a Terminal window, go to Kismet's folder and run the following commands from the command line:
