  • FROM THE LOWER DEPTHS OF HELL comes Wizard 1.9, a malign masquerade ball of new features and functionality. If you thought that Wizard could already do everything when it comes to data transformation and analysis, YOU WERE WRONG. In the biggest release since last year's sleeper hit Wizard 1.8, Wizard 1.9 brings you...
  • COLLAPSIBLE FILTERS -- Make the most of screen real estate with the new Pin button -- when activated, it keeps filters applied even when you close the Filters pane.
  • DATES, DATES, DATES -- Import dates in your favorite format, format your dates with four exciting date templates, analyze dates with down-to-the-second precision, partition date/time data with greater flexibility, and create Timestamp columns using the number of seconds from a particular start date.
  • FILE SIZE FORMATTING -- Does your data set include a file size measured in bytes? Now you can format it with easy-to-read units (KB, MB, GB, etc). There's even an option to switch between the decimal convention (1,000 bytes per kilobyte) and the binary convention (1,024 bytes per kilobyte).
  • ITUNES IMPORTER -- Automatically pull in your music collection and see all the new features in action with the new iTunes importer. Visualize your listening habits by time of day, tally up your music collection by artist and genre, and graph file sizes and track lengths just for kicks. To get started, use the new menu item File > Import iTunes Music Library...
  • These are just the big-ticket items -- in addition, Wizard 1.9 boasts countless interface tweaks and bug fixes to make your statistical experience as smooth, seamless, and streamlined as possible. Enjoy it on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or later.

New in Wizard 1.8.0 (Feb 10, 2016)

  • REFRESH FROM WEB: Ever wish you could grab data directly from the web? Now you can import files directly from the WWW just by clicking "Import URL" and typing in a web address. Wizard will download the file for you, and keep your analysis up-to-date every time you click the "Refresh Data" button. The new feature is ideal for JSON data, but is designed to work with every file format supported by Wizard. To get started, choose File > Open URL, or click the new "Import URL" button in the toolbar.
  • POST-HOC ANALYSIS: A.k.a., "multiple comparisons corrections". If you're hunting for significant p-values, you should usually apply a statistical correction to account for the number of simultaneous tests you're performing -- this keeps your Type I error rate under control (and also keeps the journal referees happy). Now applying the correction is as simple as checking the box labeled "Adjust for multiple comparisons" and entering a number. To avoid confusion, corrected p-values will appear with an asterisk. (The applied correction is technically a Šidák correction, which is slightly more accurate than Bonferroni. You are nonetheless encouraged to celebrate the new feature by belting out "Bonferroni" to the tune of "My Sharona".)
  • NEW TEXT FUNCTIONS: "Concatenate" joins together multiple text columns with an optional separator. "Convert to Numeric" changes the underlying storage of a text column to be numeric. "Count Characters" and "Count Words" lets you compute the lengths of text values, ideal for analyzing natural-language data. If you'd like more text functions, just send me an email with your request and I'll take it under consideration. (Choose "Email the Developer" from the Help menu.)
  • MISCELLANEOUS IMPROVEMENTS: The Raw Data and Pivot views now remember each column's width when you resize it. (Less "resize hell" after re-opening a document.) The Column menu has been cleaned up to display only functions that are relevant to the selected column. The Pivot view allows you to perform "Count Non-missing" on a category column. The "Enter Full Screen" shortcut is now the same as Apple programs (^⌘F). Note that Wizard now requires OS X 10.9 Mavericks or later. If you are running an older operating system, please take time to upgrade your system.

  • Interaction terms: Models can now include separate interaction terms between two explanatory variables. For continuous variables, this is the product of the two terms; for category variables, this is an extra set of dummy variables representing all possible combinations of the two terms. Interaction terms will "just work" in the Predict view and in export XLS models.

  • NEW! Features for working with R — the popular statistical computing package — have graduated from Wizard Pro and are now available in regular Wizard. Import and export R workspace files (.RData), and easily copy models as R code (in the Model view, just choose View > Show Estimation Command). If you've ever been interested in R but felt lost on the command line, Wizard will be your trusted companion.
  • Importing newer Excel files (the XLSX file format). Wizard can now read in XLSX with ease. So if you see any old reviews bemoaning the lack of XLSX support, please note that as of today they are 100% obsolete. Being able to import XLSX is ideal for people who work with large data sets, as the older XLS format cannot store more than 65,000 rows.
  • To make up for several months of missing XLSX support, I went the extra mile with Wizard 1.3 and implemented the ability to import Numbers spreadsheets, that is, files ending in ".numbers". If you choose File > Import Numbers Document, Wizard will scan your spreadsheet and suck in all the data tables that it can find. So if you're a Numbers fan like me, now you can import your data into Wizard without having to export it as XLS first.
