Trickster Changelog

What's new in Trickster 3.9.2

Dec 17, 2023
  • Handle displaying new Dropbox client's paths and iCloud-based Desktop/Documents
  • Add support for Setapp version of Hookmark
  • Fixes and improvements for updating to future versions, especially on macOS Sonoma
  • For items originating from DEVONthink:
  • Copying URLs will copy a callback URL that opens the item in DEVONthink
  • Helps with copying DEVONthink items, for example
  • Option-Double-Click or Option-Return will open the file using a default app for the type instead of inside DEVONthink.

New in Trickster 3.9.1 (Mar 6, 2023)

  • Added a setting to select what should be displayed in the Favorites sidebar: Icon, Title or Both (like previously).
  • Improved integration with Hookmark and DEVONthink:
  • Change name from Hook to its rebrand name Hookmark.
  • Display Hookmark button for tracked DEVONthink documents that have hooks.
  • Invoking Hookmark on a DEVONthink item in Trickster will provide expected URL to DEVONthink.

New in Trickster 3.9 (Oct 21, 2022)

  • Fix launch on log in to be hidden from 10.15 and up
  • Better reliability of access to watched folders
  • Fixes system apps not being tracked on Big Sur or later. Automatically add folder to watch system apps, if /Applications is chosen.
  • Allow dragging a file or a folder to favorites directly from Finder. This still has the limitation that the added files or folders should be already in a Watchable location. They will be automatically added to list of items, favorited and inserted where dropped.

New in Trickster 3.8.1 (Jul 7, 2021)

  • Fix AppleScript integration (required for LaunchBar integration, for example)
  • Add menu items in Integrations menu for Hook, LaunchBar and Alfred articles in user manual, in addition to the DEVONthink one.

New in Trickster 3.8 (Jun 21, 2021)

  • NEW: Integration with DEVONthink (optional). This integration enables Trickster to track the documents you open in DEVONthink and then open these documents back in DEVONthink when you ask to open them in Trickster. Read details in our documentation forum.
  • The underlying additions open the door to possible integration with other Mac apps and even other services in the future. If there are other applications or services which you think would make sense to integrate with Trickster, let us know on our Trickster forums at https://discourse.apparentsoft.com/c/trickster/6

New in Trickster 3.7 (Jun 4, 2021)

  • NEW: Added Renaming capability (Command-K or from the context menu)
  • Moved the User Manual to the web forum (https://www.apparentsoft.com/trickster/manual)

New in Trickster 3.6 (Jan 11, 2021)

  • NEW: Add a preference to automatically scroll Trickster to top of the list and select top item after a period of inactivity or on every recall. Default is still to not do it, so that it defaults as in previous versions, unless changed in Preferences.
  • Allow vertical dragging motion to start dragging a file instead of selecting more files. This is probably the more common use for that motion. Multiple files can still be selected with Shift or Command clicking
  • Allow Trickster window to become smaller than it was
  • If the anchor option is set (not to close Trickster’s window), it’ll now reappear after dragging a file out of the window. Trickster disappears when dragging out so as not to cover a potential dragging destination. But it was not coming back previously, even of anchor option in the window titlebar was selected
  • “Open at cursor” option works correctly now when multiple screens are connected to the Mac
  • Fix showing Trickster window on the correct screen when Trickster icon in the menubar is clicked and Trickster is in the “attached to menubar” state
  • Add Hook icon to the collection of filter icons for custom filters
  • Fix filtering of tags that include Capital letter
  • Fix support for Hook version 2.2 and alter
  • Fix filter icon position on macOS version prior to Big Sur
  • Some fixes and improvements to tracking for new customers

New in Trickster 3.5 (Nov 12, 2020)

  • Build 3502: Fix previous version of Trickster 3.5 clearing almost all of the list on launch
  • Added Support for macOS 11 (Big Sur) and Apple Silicon Macs
  • Added a preference to limit the number of files that Trickster will keep in the list. The default is 5000 but it can be edited to be between 10 and 10000. Note that the actual number of files at any specific time can be higher for many reasons since the cleanup occurs only about once an hour or on launch.
  • When tracking is paused (there's a command in Trickster's main menu), Trickster will now display [Paused] in its title and its icon in the menubar will become translucent.
  • Invoking the "Empty List" command in the main menu will now show a confirmation alert
  • Updated the copy of various menu items to make them clearer and more consistent
  • When the "Current app" filter (bottom bar, second control from left) is disabled, Trickster will now display the current app's icon as translucent, for clearer indication of the enabled and disabled state for this option

New in Trickster 3.4 (Apr 10, 2020)

  • NEW: Integration with the application Hook
  • Hook is a Mac application by CogSci Apps which also helps with fast access to resources on the Mac or on the web enabling you to quickly link and access resources.
  • If you have Hook installed and running, Trickster will show an additional button on the right edge of the row for files that already have Hook links. This helps with knowing when to invoke and not invoke Hook - there’s no need to remember or guess if a file or a folder on your Mac has hooks. If there are, the button will appear to indicate that. Clicking on that button will invoke Hook on the corresponding file, saving you a trip to the keyboard to hit Hook’s hotkey.
  • So, now you can use Trickster with Hook to access relevant files linked to recently modified ones.
  • NEW: Added a Preference, which selects showing Trickster’s window at current mouse location, if the window is not attached to the menubar icon and Trickster is invoked using the keyboard. Can be very handy for even faster access to files in Trickster. Trickster will position the window such that the mouse is over the topmost visible item, allowing for immediate dragging of it out of Trickster (for example, to drop into an email)
  • IMPROVED: Made it so that the popup menu called from the keyboard shows Services menu. As a consequence, the menu open not at the gear button but at the current mouse location
  • FIXED: Hiding Trickster’s window when dragging files out to the left of it

New in Trickster 3.3 (Dec 5, 2019)

  • Fix undesirable scrolling of the file list
  • Memory usage and performance improvements

New in Trickster 2.7 (Jan 20, 2018)

  • Trickster’s window can now be dragged by the top or bottom bar to detach it from the icon in the menu bar. It can then be reattached by bringing the window close to the icon. Very useful to reduce the amount of dragging you need to do on large monitors.
  • Monitoring can now be paused to save CPU resource during file-intensive operations or when running operations that create a lot of files that you don’t want to see in Trickster. Trickster can be paused from its main menu (bottom-right button) or using Mac’s Defaults mechanism (see User Manual for details on that).
  • Cosmetic fixes and improvements

New in Trickster 2.6 (Jan 5, 2017)

  • NEW: Light Theme. Change in Preferences.
  • NEW: Trickster will now ask if to overwrite a file when a file is dragged onto a folder in Favorites, and another file with same name already exists there

  • NEW: Provide instructions in File Tracking and Filter Editing Panels

New in Trickster 2.3.4 (Oct 26, 2015)

  • Add AppleScript support for working with filters — it’s now possible to get the list of filters and list of files in each filter
  • This allows for better integration with applications such as LaunchBar or for your own scripts. Visit our blog at http://blog.apparentsoft.com to find integrations with LaunchBar and Alfred.
  • Remember active filter between launches
  • Recent searches are now remembered
  • Search text, if entered, is now focused and selected when opening Trickster’s window. This makes it easier to clear it quickly with Backspace. Navigate from search field with arrow up or down.
  • Starting your search text with either letter P or N didn’t activate search. While it did for any other key. Gotta love these kind of bugs
  • Trickster might now ask to refresh some watched folders. This may be required in situations when hard drive is changed or any other reason that may prevent Trickster from accessing watched folders under Sandbox. Trickster will detect these cases upon launch or when updating Watched Folders, will remove those entries and ask you to add them back.
  • “File Tracking Settings” menu item is changed to “Configure File Tracking”. It’s an action and is clearer. User manual was updated to reflect this change. You knew that there’s a full User Manual in the Help menu, righ

New in Trickster 2.3 (Aug 20, 2014)

  • UI updates + speed + stability:
  • Removed the heart-looking button for favourites in favour of a star-shaped button on the top-right of the window. Anchor button moved to the top-left.
  • Disabled animation of changes in the list of files. It's faster, uses less CPU and reduces crashes.
  • Added a preference to disable fade-out of the window when it hides. Work faster.

New in Trickster 2.2.2 (May 16, 2014)

  • Mac OS X 10.9.3 update made a change to the file system, making the /Users folder hidden. This prevented Trickster from tracking any file inside the user’s home folder.
  • Version 2.2.2 of Trickster (released today) now allows tracking files inside hidden folders. This also allows selecting previously hidden folders, such as the /Library folder.
  • Direct customers should update immediately through the application, or by downloading Trickster directly.
  • Mac App Store customers need to wait until version 2.2.2 appears in the store or work around the issue in meantime by running the following command in Terminal:
  • sudo chflags nohidden /Users
  • Enter your administrator’s password when prompted, then press Return. The /Users folder will be visible again.

New in Trickster 2.2.1 (Jan 3, 2014)

  • Fixed: Watching a home folder didn’t work in some occasions.
  • Improved: Resizing of window is now more free. Allow large window when Trickster icon is near screen edge.
  • Added: Google Drive icon in icons for filters.

New in Trickster 2.2 (Nov 25, 2013)

  • MAJOR CHANGES:
  • Sandboxing. Trickster is now totally sandboxed, including the direct version.
  • What you need to know:
  • Launching this version should migrate your database into the container.
  • The application should ask you to re-add all the folders that you watch. It should show a dialog which lists all these folders that you had there in the list to help you add them again. This should only happen once.
  • Trickster now requires 10.8. Sandboxing on 10.7 is not good enough for Trickster.
  • Tags support in Mavericks. It's now possible to create filters based on tags. The filter editor now has a sixth button on the bottom to access the tags filtering. The filter will accept files whose filters contain any of the strings that you enter there.
  • This means that a filter that has two tag entries — "Work" and "Ball" — will match files that have tags such as "Workout", "Football", "homework" or "Job". Just kidding about "Job."
  • MINOR CHANGES:
  • If current view doesn't contain any files (search or filter), it'll show a message inside the list area, instead of showing an empty area
  • Trickster will ask for permissions to access the address book when you click on "subscribe to newsletter"
  • Trickster will show a popover on first launch to explain where to find the File Tracker Settings
  • Fix the display of compact mode on 10.9 (the path wasn't hidden and garbled the display)
  • Energy efficiency should be improved when there are no files to add/remove/update in the list

New in Trickster 2.1.1 (Jan 14, 2013)

  • Fix Trickster reaching 100% CPU usage for users during trial period
  • Fix number of days for 2 weeks of expiration setting to behave correctly
  • Don’t show Trickster’s window on launch, if Hide is set in Login Items.
  • Replaced flag with a yellow one instead of the older crimson-colored one for better contrast.

New in Trickster 2.1 (Nov 27, 2012)

  • New features:
  • Add Share submenu to the context menu (uses Mountain Lion built-in sharing capabilities, so only works on 10.8 or higher).
  • Add copy (Cmd-C) support. Selected files will be copied to the clipboard, like from Finder.
  • Adding files to Evernote from the context menu. You can add files either to the default notebook or to a specific one. Requires Evernote for Mac application to be installed on the machine.
  • Voice-over accessibility support.
  • Preference to only track opened files. In this case, modified and created files won’t appear in Trickster.
  • Support Control-P and Control-N for table navigation.
  • Automation support
  • AppleScript commands to get recent entries, selected entries, add files to Trickster and refresh the sort.
  • Added system-wide Service that allows adding selected files from Finder to Trickster as most recent ones. Even allows adding files by invoking the service on text that includes file paths.
  • Added a URL scheme (trickster-add-recent://) to add files to Trickster
  • Minor changes and fixes:
  • Don’t remove flagged files when cleaning items, just as favorite items are not removed.
  • Fixed: flagging a file would add it to any filter with flag set, regardless of other filter settings.
  • Activate the previous app when Trickster hides main window.
  • In Filter manager, when a file is dropped, display if the file won’t pass global tracking settings, even if it passes the filter.
  • Adjust window height to fit the screen, if resolution or display changes.

New in Trickster 2.0.2 (Jul 25, 2012)

  • New features:
  • It's now possible to drop files from Finder or other apps onto the Recent files list to add them to the list.

  • Full support for Retina displays
  • Return to items list from search with up/down arrows.
  • Type to search from every part of the window.
  • Remove items from list with Delete/Backspace
  • Added Remove commands to the pop-up menu.
  • Trash files with Command-delete.
  • Add Trash to pop-up menu.
  • Accept "." in manual extensions in filters and index.

  • Fixed drag and drop support with some apps, such as Skype and Illustrator.
  • Fixed the creation of excluded files from context menu.
  • Fixed different window resizing problems and Favorites bar drawing.
