New in Sente 6.7.9 Build 11898 Pre (Sep 18, 2015)

  • This is the first publicly available pre-release of Sente for El Capitan. While a lot of effort has gone into upgrading the app to work with the latest version of OS X, we are still relatively early in the testing, so we do not recommend this pre-release for regular use. (Of course, if you are running a pre-release of El Capitan, you cannot run Sente 6.7.8 anyway. The point is that we are opening this up for help with testing; do not expect this release to be stable yet.)
  • This release has NOT been tested on earlier releases of OS X, so if you are not running El Capitan, but would like to help, you can download this version and try it on your system. We recommend that you do not overwrite your existing copy of Sente 6.7.8 with this pre-release, but keep both versions around while you test. (Should you inadvertently delete your copy of 6.7.8, you can always re-download from our site, of course.)

New in Sente 6.7.8 Build 11870 (Jan 6, 2015)

  • Fixed a bug that caused File > Open Library to fail.
  • Fixed a bug when running on OS X 10.7.

New in Sente 6.7.8 Build 11864 (Jan 6, 2015)

  • Updated to be compatible with OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

New in Sente 6.7.7 Build 11825 (Jul 12, 2014)

  • Corrected several scanning bugs: an RTF scanning error encountered whed unicode characters are terminated with a newline; an exception that could sometimes cause scanning to hang.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when importing a reference through Applescript.

New in Sente 6.7.6 Build 11672 (May 2, 2014)

  • Corrected problem that caused bibliographies to be generated without newlines between entries.
  • Removed the license acceptance step when launching new releases.

New in Sente 6.7.5 Build 11649 (Apr 16, 2014)

New in Sente 6.7.4 Build 11520 (Nov 21, 2013)

  • Fixed a rare sync bug that was affecting several users, and which could affect more.

New in Sente 6.7.4 Build 11517 (Nov 20, 2013)

  • There is a new File > New Library dialog window that presents the option of automatically importing
  • libraries from Mendeley, Zotero of Papers into your new library if any of these are present on your computer. These library importers have also been improved in various ways.
  • There is also a new File > Open Library window that presents the known libraries in a free-standing window, rather than in a submenu.
  • The start-up options have changes to use these new dialogs for new users to help them get up and running more quickly.
  • There is also a new Window > Bibliography Formats window that is used for setting your "favorite" bibliography formats. The Bibliography Format Editor has been reconfigured and it now accessed through the new Bibliography Formats window.
  • Users with a free Basic account can now share libraries with other users.
  • Users without Premium account can no longer edit libraries that have been shared with them, regardless of permissions.

New in Sente 6.7.3 Build 11460 (Nov 7, 2013)

  • An important fix to sync that was causing some users to experience sync errors. It appears that some recent OS X update changed the way the MIME type of some files is reported.
  • Updated targeted browsing support for: NY Times, arXiv.
  • Added ability to stop syncing a library. That is, to permanently disconnect the local copy of the library from the server.

New in Sente 6.7.0 Build 11353 (Sep 17, 2013)

  • Is now a 64-bit app and both have been converted to use Objective-C 2.0 and ARC memory management for increased stability and performance.

New in Sente 6.6.0 Build 10939 Preview (Mar 19, 2013)

  • Sync2 -- a major update to the sync technology that Sente uses; creating and using synced libraries is now easier than ever.
  • Find-in-PDF -- now supported on both the Mac and iPad.
  • New, streamlined PDF annotation interface on the iPad.
  • Support for the retina display on Mac.
  • A new approach to licensing makes Sente free for many uses.

New in Sente 6.6.0 Build 10920 Preview (Mar 12, 2013)

  • Includes:
  • Find-in-PDF
  • Support for the Retina Display

New in Sente 6.6.0 Preview 1 (Dec 12, 2012)

  • Sync2:
  • Sync2 is a complete overhaul of Sente's library synchronization mechanism, including a faster and more robust backend, and a simpler user interface.  Like the old version, Sync2 lets you install synchronized copies of your libraries on any number of Macs and iPads, anywhere on the Internet.  Changes in any copy are sent to all other copies almost immediately.  You can also still share copies with other users, and set their permissions appropriately.
  • The new version of sync has a number of improvements, like:
  • It now uses standard web protocols to communicate with the servers, so it will work behind most firewalls.
  • There is now no limit on the size of attachments (sync1 only supported files up to 20MB).
  • Sync2 is based around user accounts, so you can now install your libraries on new machines directly from the server (no need to create a copy on the "master" machine).
  • The user interface is better.
  • Sync2 is faster.
  • Sharing libraries with others is easier (and they can even access your library without paying for Sente; see below).
  • You can now install any of your synchronized libraries on any of your devices by simply selecting it from the File > Open Library menu.  One big advantage to this approach is that even if you were to lose your entire computer, you can get back to just where you were by simply installing the software on a new machine and reinstalling your libraries from the server.  Everything will be just as you left it.
  • To start using the new version, you will need to create an account on the sync servers.  When you launch the app for the first time, you will be presented with a registration screen.  You will use your email address as your user name (don't worry, we will never use your email address for any purpose other than Sente).
  • When you open a Sente 6.5 library, you will be prompted to convert it to the new sync.  We would, of course, strongly recommend that you make a copy of your existing library before converting it to the new sync.
  • Once your library begins syncing in the new version, you will be able to open it using Sente 6.6 on any other Mac.  (See below for information on the upcoming Sente 6.6 for iPad.)
  • New Pricing and Licensing:
  • The other major change in Sente 6.6 is the way in which we are pricing and licensing Sente.
  • Beginning with Sente 6.6, both the desktop and the iPad apps will be absolutely free for anyone with libraries up to 100 references.  A free license will also include 250MB of space on the sync servers, which can be spread across any number of libraries.  This means that Sente will be free for many users, like people who just need to write a few papers in which they will cite a handful of references.
  • Users who need to work with more references will be able to upgrade to a premium account for just $29.95.  This will enable them to create libraries with any number of references.  It will also increase the space on the sync server to 1GB (enough for about 1,000 typical academic PDFs).  There are no recurring costs for a premium account.
  • People with a premium account who need more sync space can purchase it on an annual basis, starting at $19.95/year for 5GB.
  • Current Sente users can register their existing licenses with the new sync server to be given a non-expiring space allocation (20GB for standard and academic licenses; 1GB for undergraduate licenses).  Once you have created your account, use the Sente 6 > Enter Sente License Code... command to enter your existing Sente license.  Please note: each license can only be added to one account, so if you have been sharing a license with someone, only one of you will be able to use the old license to get the additional space allocation.  (Please note: licenses purchased on or before October 28, 2012 can be entered into Sente 6.6 today;  licenses purchased after this date will be available in the coming weeks, but will not be recognized today.)
  • The new purchasing mechanisms found in the preview versions of Sente are live.  This includes the Sente 6 > Upgrade to Premium Account command, and the Sync > Add Sync Space... command. This means that anyone who wishes to purchase a license using the new pricing can do so within the app today.  Purchases made this way, however, will only work with Sente 6.6, not Sente 6.5.

New in Sente 6.5.18 (Sep 19, 2012)

  • Corrected a bug in Sente preferences introduced in 6.5.17.

New in Sente 6.5.0 (Dec 19, 2011)

  • The new multiple-line reference list view is much more attractive and readable. While the old, grid view is still available, most users prefer the new view for most work.
  • Single collection tabs let you open tabs containing only those references in any collection in your library, like one showing all references with a particular status.
  • The completely new reference editor is more attractive and usable. It supports custom layouts based on reference type, and all layouts can be tailored to meet your specific needs.
  • The new notes interface features color coding to match the highlighting you added to your PDFs, and the ability to jump from any note to its original source in the PDF.
  • New window layout options let you set up each tab to make best use of your particular screen setup. You can, for example, place the reference list at the left edge of single collection tabs, making them particularly useful on a large monitor.
  • Support for Full Screen Mode under Lion (OS X 10.7).
  • Improved citation lookup now supports many more data sources. The new Citation Lookup sheet, which can be used either as files are being added to your library, or after the fact, makes it easy to locate the citation data for a paper using dozens of common sources.
  • Scan-in-place support for Microsoft Word and Apple Pages lets you work with a formatted version of your document at all times. When you select the scan-in-place option, Sente formats any recently added citations and lets you keep right on editing without missing a beat.
  • Compatibility with Word + EndNote lets you easily collaborate with colleagues who still use EndNote with Word. You will be able to edit and scan their documents, and they will be able to do the same with yours.
  • Common customizations now sync between copies of your library. Items like your custom statuses, reference type definitions, custom reference attributes, web bookmarks, QuickTags, hotword definitions, reference editor configurations and more are all automatically synchronized to all other copies of a library. (These changes do not yet appear in Sente for iPad -- this is coming.)
  • The new Print-to-Sente command, available in all print dialogs on your system, lets you quickly send any document as a PDF to Sente.
  • There is a completely new user manual, available in both PDF and EPUB formats.

New in Sente 6.5 Preview 5 (Dec 12, 2011)

  • A New Notes Interface
  • Revised Add File Interface
  • Scan-in-Place Support for Pages
  • Ignore Cover Page on PDFs

New in Sente 6.5 Preview 4 (Nov 28, 2011)

  • There is a completely new autolink interface.  This includes the way that autolink templates are managed (this is now in the Autolink Setup pane in the source list) and the way they are accessed (click on the "links" icon in the attachment view header).
  • The attachment view now automatically loads one of the autolinks (as controlled in the setup pane), or the autolinks page itself, when there are no attachments on a reference.
  • The attachment view header has been improved.
  • The output gesture configuration has been moved into Sente Preferences.  This is where you say what Sente should do when you drag a reference from the reference list, for example.
  • There is a new Add Reference sheet that is used when adding references to your library (e.g., through targeted browsing, or when dropping a URL onto a library).  You can edit the reference in this sheet before updating the library (e.g., you can set a status, add tags, etc.)
  • There is a new Add File sheet that appears when you drop PDFs or other files onto your library.  You now also have options of adding multiple files using template references (e.g., to automatically assign tags to all files in a batch).
  • There is now a Create Reference from this Web Page in the context menu in Sente's web view.  Sente will automatically add a web archive of the page to the new reference.
  • Crossref.org is now used to lookup citation data for a DOI.

  • Compatible with Sente for iPad:
  • Sente 6.2.0 is required for compatibility with the soon-to-be-released full version of Sente for iPad. This new version of desktop Sente uses a different approach to PDF highlighting to be compatible with the iPad version. We recommend that anyone considering Sente for iPad upgrade to Sente 6.2 prior to installing and using the iPad app.
  • New PDF Viewer and Annotation Model:
  • The attachment view has been entirely rewritten in this release. Most importantly, the PDF view has been made compatible with the PDF view in Sente for iPad. This involved user interface changes as well as changes to the way in which PDF annotation is stored.
  • Library Import from Mendeley, Papers and Zotero:
  • It is now possible to directly import Mendeley, Papers and Zotero libraries directly, without first exporting the data from those applications. This both improves the quality of the data that gets imported and, most importantly, it allows Sente to obtain PDFs directly, rather than relying on links or URLs in the export files.
  • Support for Microsoft Word 2011:
  • Sente can now scan docx files produced by the latest version of Microsoft Word. Sente works with Word 2011 just the same way that it works with Word 2008 (that is, it uses the File > Scan interface).

  • Sente now displays a Library identification number, and a current message number, for synchronized libraries to help track down any problems with library synchronization. The library ID can be found in the window title bar and the message number in the footer. Two copies of a synced library should display the same library ID number and, when up-to-date, the same message number.

  • Improved the handling of EBSCOhost web pages.

New in Sente 6.1.8 (May 13, 2010)

  • Miscellaneous:

New in Sente 6.1.4 (Mar 15, 2010)

  • IMPORTANT: Sente 6.1 is not backwards compatible with Sente 6.0. When you first open a Sente 6.0 library in Sente 6.1, Sente will make changes to the library that will prevent it from opening correctly in Sente 6.0.
  • For this reason, it is essential that you MAKE A COMPLETE BACKUP of your library and all attachments prior to installing and launching Sente 6.1. If you are unable to use Sente 6.1. for any reason, you will need to restore your library (and attachments) from your backup to revert to 6.0.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed two bugs in the handling of attachments in libraries which have been set to use the "link to" option for attachment handling. (1) attachments added to existing references were being lost on restart; and (2) automatically downloaded attachments were not being handled correctly.

New in Sente 6.0.12 (Oct 22, 2009)

  • Synchronized Libraries. Sente 6 makes it easy to maintain multiple copies of a reference library, including attachments such as PDF files, on multiple computers. This works well for users who regularly work on more than one computer. Because permissions can be set differently on each copy, this feature is also useful for sharing a library with colleagues.
  • Hierarchical Reference Tagging. Sente 6 makes it easy to assign and use tags on references. And tags can be arranged hierarchically, in which case Sente will treat references with child tags as though they had also been assigned the parent tags. This makes organizing a large research library much easier than it has ever been before.
  • PDF Markup. This new version also includes PDF markup commands that can be used to highlight passages or other regions in a PDF file. This information is synchronized along with the PDFs themselves, so the marked-up copy is available in any synchronized copy of the library almost immediately.
  • Hundreds of New Bibliography Formats. This significantly increases the likelihood that the format someone needs is already built-in.

New in Sente 6.0.9 Beta (Oct 12, 2009)

  • Sente 6 is "document-based" meaning that there is one main window per library. We think this makes for a cleaner interface and it supports coming enhancements better than our old approach.
  • Libraries in Sente 6 are now single files (bundles, actually) that can be placed anywhere on your computer, like in your Documents folder. Double-click the library in Finder and Sente will pop it open.
  • Attachments (PDFs and other files) can now be stored right in the library. This eliminates the problems with links breaking when you, for example, move a library from one machine to another. Copy a library to a thumb drive and you have all your references and PDFs.
  • Libraries can now be automatically synchronized across any number of computers, and this includes all attachments stored in the library. And different copies of a library can have different permissions, so you can share a library with colleagues without giving them the ability to make changes.
  • Sente 6 supports reference tagging. And tags are fully supported by Find, Browse and Smart Collection definition.
  • There is a new QuickTag palette that lets you quickly see which tags have been applied to one or more references, and assign and remove tags from any number of references with a single click.
  • Tags can be organized hierarchically. References with more specific tags (i.e., more deeply nested tags) will be returned when searching for less specific (i.e., less deeply nested) tags.
  • Sente 6 automatically provides a number of built-in smart collections to support many common needs. For example, there are folders for all recently added references, and all references with specific QuickTags, and all references with particular statuses.
  • There are hundreds of new bibliography styles based on CSL format definitions. And more will be added prior to the official release of 6.0.
  • There is a new, on-line user manual. This is still being completed, but because it is on-line, you will always see the most up-to-date version when you click on Help > User's Guide.

New in Sente 5.6.1 (Jun 19, 2008)

  • Sente 5.6.1 adds targeted browsing, which lets users download and import references from selected web sites simply by clicking on target icons in the page, using the new embedded web browser. This feature makes acquiring references from supported web sites easier than ever.

New in Sente 5.5.0 (May 7, 2008)

  • Enhanced PDF management. In this new version, users can create references directly from the PDF files they already have, as well as new PDFs that they receive from colleagues. Sente uses Google Scholar, the Library of Congress and PubMed to create complete references when importing a new PDF.
  • Sente 5.5 also includes a new Quick Add feature that lets users create complete citations from only an ISBN, DOI or PubMed ID.

New in Sente 5.4.1 (Apr 10, 2008)

  • Version 5.4.1 makes it easier to view, obtain and organize attachments for any reference.
  • The new Links component in the reference editor can be used to view existing attachments and automatically-identified web pages. And, when you click on any PDF file on any of these pages, Sente will automatically download the file, rename it and file it according to your preferences, and attach it to the current reference.

New in Sente 5.4.0 (Apr 9, 2008)

  • Easy Access to Auto-Links. Now, all active auto-links are shown right in the Links view for easy access. For example, if the reference contains a DOI, the DOI link is active and clicking on it will take you right to the publishers web page for the article.
  • Automatic PDF Downloads. When viewing any web page within the Links view, when you click on a link to a PDF view, Sente can automatically download, rename and file the PDF according to your preferences.
  • Attachments. All attachments for a reference are available within the Links view; just click on the icon and the file will be opened within Sente. (Files like Word and Pages documents are not displayable within Sente, but can be opened with one additional command.)

New in Sente 4.2.5 (Sep 13, 2007)
