Some international Amazon stores may not show the product; we are investigating this issue and will update Sandvox as we find out more. In the meantime, the basic layouts should continue to work just fine.

  • New Features:
  • Sandvox Hosting! This version integrates with Karelia Software's new Sandvox Hosting service.
  • The Host Setup Assistant now integrates directly with Sandvox Hosting, plus dramatically simplifies the process of setting and testing third-party hosting providers as well.
  • The act of exporting a site and the act of publishing onto the local computer via the Host Setup Assistant have been unified into a "Publish to Folder" menu item. The "Publish to this folder by default" checkbox allows repeated publication to that same folder.
  • Those Sandvox designs that use Google fonts will load them asynchronously, which means that these websites will load (though without Google fonts) from places like China that block them. Third-party designs will need updating to take advantage of this.

New in Sandvox 2.9 Build 29099 (Sep 24, 2014)

  • Objects:
  • Contact Forms now have the “Send from Karelia” option checked by default if it had not explicitly been turned off before. This is to help reduce the number of messages lost due to mistyped “from” addresses or aggressive spam filters on the receiving end. A few Sandvox users may want to turn this checkbox off if they are relying on the old behavior for any mail-processing rules or scripts. (Or, better yet, update those mail-processing rules or scripts.)
  • New object for playing videos hosted on Vimeo
  • Improves handling of images which have accidentally been set to have “auto” width or height
  • Corrects an issue where pasting or dragging pages to duplicate them could end up shrinking photos
  • Publishing:
  • We’ve added support for additional publishing protocols:
  • FTP with Implicit SSL
  • FTP with TLS/SSL
  • WebDAV with HTTPS
  • The full suite of protocols is available during Host Setup. If you’ve previously chosen to publish to an FTP server, Sandvox will guess whether to use FTP or FTPS based on your previous preferences. If this guess is wrong, you just need to edit your Host Setup, selecting the correct protocol to use.
  • Sandvox is now stricter about certificate handling when connecting to a server using TLS/SSL (i.e. publishing using HTTPS or one of the FTPS protocols). Certificates must be deemed valid by your Mac, either because they’ve been signed by a recognized authority (this is the normal case), or your Keychain has been configured to make an exception for this particular certificate/server. If at all possible, we recommend hosting providers use a suitable certificate and upload settings. If not, third-party FTP clients such as Transmit can generally be used to generate a system-wide exemption for your particular setup.
  • SFTP and FTP connections are reused when possible for better performance
  • When stopping publishing, the currently uploading file is allowed to finish first. Clicking the Stop button for a second time forces the upload to stop immediately
  • Avoids the quirk where the publishing process of folders could appear to jump backwards and forwards for some time
  • Fixes a crash when SFTP authentication takes too long
  • Addresses an issue where the publish or export progress window would unnecessarily include an entry for the overall upload folder
  • The dock progress indicator for publishing is working again
  • Revamped sheet for browsing remote folders during host setup
  • Browser Compatibility:
  • Allows IE 9 and above to play video and MP3 audio natively, not using Flash
  • Fix to video/audio flash detection script
  • Adds a margin below popup menus so that sub-menus taller than the content will not be cut off on Webkit browsers
  • Improves compatibility of favicon images with Google Chrome
  • Distribution & Licensing:
  • Sandvox is now distributed as a .zip archive, not a disk image (.dmg). Consequently, the software license agreement is shown on first launch (instead of as part of mounting the disk image)
  • If launched from outside of the Applications folder, Sandvox offers to move itself to a more appropriate location
  • Fixes a crash in the licensing window
  • Document Handling:
  • Improves reliability of importing corrupted old Sandvox documents
  • Corrects a bug where photo albums wouldn’t display titles after import

New in Sandvox 2.8 Build 28042 (May 15, 2013)

  • Can automatically take advantage of high-resolution source images to optimize for display on Retina screen devices, whenever they are available. Controls for this have been added to the Appearance tab of the Document Inspector.
  • The Metrics Inspector now helps with image optimization:
  • Dimensions are now measured in points instead of pixels (Retina displays contain 4x as many pixels as 'regular' resolution displays)
  • If an image will appear at less than full quality (on either regular or Retina displays), a warning message will appear
  • The Size button now acts as a toggle between 'Retina' & 'regular' quality, preventing over-sizing of images
  • When Retina support is turned on, Sandvox makes high-resolution images "retina-ready" so that people who view your website on Retina screens will see images that are optimized for their screens, instead of 'regular' resolution images. On Retina screen devices, 'regular' resolution images appear fuzzy and pixellated.
  • With Retina support 'on' Sandvox will optimize, whenever possible:
  • Image objects, including logos
  • Banners (your custom banners & built-in banners for most Designs)
  • Photo Grid (including Gallery), Slide Show, and Titles & Summaries indexes
  • Amazon Lists
  • Badges & icons: RSS and Sandvox badges, and AIM Status objects (unfortunately not possible for other IM services at present)
  • Note: You may notice differences in the built-in banners and/or placeholder images in some Designs due to updates made for Retina support.
  • Designs:
  • Two new included Designs: Hydrogen and Kryptonite. You can choose to use either a left-side Sidebar or a right-side Sidebar with Hydrogen or Kryptonite.
  • All Designs have been updated to have a more accurate "full width" description, enabling image objects to be manually resized wider than in previous versions. Note: If using a "Simply" design, you may need to adjust some object widths manually to match the previous sizing.
  • Other minor updates to several included Designs
  • Social & Sharing:

New in Sandvox 2.5.4 Build 25172 (Apr 6, 2012)

  • Contains an alternate FTP subsystem. We would like to get as many people testing it as possible to see if there are any bugs. To do so, simply select “cURL” as the FTP Subsystem in Sandvox’s Preferences window. The next time you publish or run through Host Setup (FTP connections only, obviously!), the new system will be used.
  • This new FTP subsystem brings about:
  • Improved handling of long uploads
  • Improved compatibility with some servers like GoDaddy’s Windows hosting
  • Fewer crashes during publishing and Host Setup
  • Gatekeeper and Developer ID
  • Sandvox builds are now signed with our Developer ID, for compatibility with Mountain Lion’s Gatekeeper feature when it ships. This will mean that the first time you publish with Sandvox 2.5.4, you will be prompted for keychain access again. After that, if you chose “Allow Always”, Sandvox will be to able to retrieve your password for publishing warning-free.
  • Licensing:
  • Upon launch, Sandvox now checks for the presence of either a Karelia-supplied license key or a valid Mac App Store receipt. This allows Mac App Store customers to download new versions of Sandvox, including betas, directly from Karelia.

New in Sandvox 2.0 Build 23315 (May 10, 2011)

  • New Features:
  • There is no longer a distinction between “Regular” and “Pro” editions of Sandvox. Everybody gets Pro features.
  • No more page “types.” Lay out text, images, video, and other objects on the page as you see fit. Plus, we still have a bunch of templates to get you started building a page.
  • Massively improved editor UI:
  • Selecting an object works much closer to traditional desktop publishing apps. Click once to select an object; click again to start editing inside of it, e.g. Text Boxes
  • Images and other objects can be resized
  • Objects can be dragged around to adjust their position, with full controls available in the Wrap Inspector
  • Drag and drop support is heavily improved. e.g. drag a file onto a media placeholder or index and Sandvox will cleanly handle it for you
  • Indexes are far more configurable; they can be moved around the page, like any other object. And we've expanded the layout choices available
  • Completely revamped Inspector. There are now six segments, giving more precise control of your website, and a cleaner layout. The rightmost segment is for options specific to the object currently selected.
  • The sidebar is more flexible, allowing you to specify exactly which objects appear on a given page if needed.
  • We have a handful of new designs, and also introduced a number of color variations to our classic designs. The Sandvox 1 bonus designs pack is now included, free, with the app
  • Brand new Design Chooser:
  • Conveniently groups design variations together
  • Filter to show only designs of a particular category
  • If the design supports it, site menu can be laid out hierarchically
  • Photo Grid sports a Gallery option for a beautiful JS display of your pictures big and bold and bright.
  • Integration with Twitter and Facebook:
  • Show feeds from Twitter
  • Add a “tweet” or “like” button to your content
  • Use Facebook as a commenting system
  • Each page includes its thumbnail (if there is one), so that websites linking to the page (Facebook, Digg, Yahoo, MySpace, etc.) display that thumbnail
  • HTML5 page generation. The goal is to make sure that your multimedia website is compatible with as many devices as possible, including iPhone/iPad, and both Mac and Windows.
  • There is a new code injection option for adding site-wide CSS; extremely handy for customizing a design. (Before, you had to insert your custom CSS into the head area of every page.)
  • Overhauled Raw HTML editor:
  • Validates your code as you type, then use the toolbar item to get more detailed info on validation
  • Specify the type of code; e.g. PHP will not attempt to be previewed in Sandvox, but will instead appear as a little "PHP" placeholder
  • Brand new Cocoa plug-in API; look for great plug-ins coming from us and third-party developers.
  • Sandvox is free to try for sites of up to five pages. Anything outside that limit will be published as a placeholder until a Sandvox license is purchased
  • Improvements:
  • We've put the page details area down below the web view, instead of in the lower left corner as it was in Sandvox 1.x.Keywords have moved into the Page Inspector, as they are not actually very important to search engines. The extra space means the page’s full URL can now be displayed.
  • Commenting system and Google integration now live in their own sheets, for easier setup.
  • Tidied up preferences window.
  • Using the Inspector, you have a lot more control about what pieces of a page (titles, sidebar, logo, etc.) will be shown. For example, it's more valuable to your site if a page's title is hidden, rather than having no title at all.
  • A regular page can be converted into a collection, and vice-versa.
  • YouTube videos use the most up-to-date embedded Flash/HTML5 player; border, border colors, and HD options are no longer supported.
  • Smarter logic for automatically adding pages to the site menu.
  • Sandvox does a much better job of keeping HTML tidy while you type.
  • The publishing system is more efficient, so all files in the site are only re-published if needed (previously, this capability only applied to pages and media files).
  • Improved page loading performance when using many of our built-in plug-ins.
  • Many other subtle UI improvements for a healthier, more energizing website building experience.
  • Sandvox is now a signed application, which means in future updates, the Keychain should stop asking you if you want to re-give Sandvox access to it
  • To aid custom HTML, jQuery is available on every page.
  • Other Notes:
  • Link editing has moved into the Inspector, including when linking an image to a larger version of itself.
  • Sandvox 2 documents have a new extension: .sandvox
  • Opening an existing .svxSite document will prompt you to upgrade the document, saving it to a new location. (Your original .svxSite document is left untouched.)
  • You can no longer edit the Raw HTML making up a text area, since that would conflict with the new flexibility over object positioning. Instead, insert Raw HTML objects within the page text as needed and enter your markup there.
  • Edited HTML imported from existing documents will be left as-is, but the first time you edit the page, it will be cleaned up, resulting in a mix of regular text and Raw HTML objects. You can force this cleanup to happen at any time with the "Format > Advanced > Tidy HTML" menu command.
  • Removed support for JS-Kit/Echo comments.

  • Fix for issue where particularly large contact forms could heavily impact performance.
  • Fix for issue where creating a document whose filename contained a non-URL-valid character, such as ?, would stop media from being copied into the document.
  • Fix for issue where JS-Kit inserted 0 at bottom of collection pages without indexes (Republish your entire site to correct this.).
  • Fix for issue on Tiger where dragging a page in the site outline immediately after creating it would cause an exception.
  • Improvements to RSS Feed pagelet and feed publishing; RSS feed URLs were incorrectly generated with certain hidden preference settings.
  • Custom summaries are, once again, editable in the raw HTML editor.
  • Comments are now excluded from QuickLook thumbnails.
  • Fix to rare cases where changes in some text blocks are never saved.

  • Now using the OSX 10.5/QuickTime 7.2 API for getting the proper dimensions, taking aspect ratio of a movie into account, when querying for the dimensions of a movie from a movie page or pagelet. This is so that an anamorphic movie returns the proper playback size, not the pixel size, which we don't want.

  • Fix for issue where changes from Search and Replace in raw HTML editor would be lost by activating the main document window immediately afterwards.

  • Fix for issue with Digg pagelet.
  • Improvements to RSS handling:

  • Updated to latest version of iMedia Browser:
  • Improved library loading performance.
  • Double-clicking on an image in the photo browser will open up the image with the default image-viewing application. Holding down the control key while double-clicking will cause the original (unedited) version of the photo to be opened, if available.

New in Sandvox 1.6 Build 9603 (Mar 26, 2009)

  • New Features:
  • Added new fields in page detail view (the area in lower left corner of document window, now resizable) for setting window title and meta description of a page; these can be customized to improve listings in search engines. Text entry fields show a counter to keep track of length; they turn red when the length exceeds the limit that will cause Google to truncate (65 for the window title; 156 for the meta description).
  • Updated and simplified the publishing sheet as part of a major update to the publishing system.
  • Added “Discover Plug-ins” menu item to the Sandvox menu. Choosing this opens a window to find and download new plug-ins (mostly designs, but also page/pagelet types). Items can be purchased by clicking on the arrow buttons to view their web page; free plugins can be directly downloaded and installed. Plugins with newer versions available than what are currently installed are highlighted.
  • Publishing now automatically registers moderator email with JS-Kit, eliminating that fraughtful step required in version 1.5.4. You set the moderator email using Site Inspector.
  • Added hidden preferences to change JS-Kit behaviors:
  • JSKitReverseOrder, when set to YES, lists comments in reverse chronological order
  • JSKitDisableAvatars, when set to YES, hides avatars from comment postings
  • JSKitDisableThreading, when set to YES, disables threading of comments
  • The Disqus comment system is now available via the Site inspector. (Enter the “short name” of your site as registered with Disqus.)
  • The IntenseDebate comment system is now available via the Site inspector. (Enter the account ID (very long string of letters and numbers) corresponding to “idcomments_acct” in IntenseDebate’s “generic install” instructions for your site.)
  • Index pages now show “comment count” of entries automatically, with a link to the full entry, for all comment systems, rather than showing comments in-line. Comments are now seen only in the complete weblog entry page.
  • Added “Submit to Site Directory...” menu item to Site menu; this opens a web page where you can submit your published website to a directory of Sandvox-built sites.
  • Pages automatically generate the new “canonical” URL tag introduced by major search engine companies on Feb 12, 2009. Each page now inserts this to help search engines determine the main, preferred URL for a page. This will help search engines realize that variations of URLs (e.g. with or without “www.”, or with or without index.html) are actually the same page. This information comes right out of the host setup settings, so the Sandvox user doesn't need to do anything special to enable this feature.
  • The Option key will change the “Publish” toolbar item into “Publish All.” You can also add the “Publish All” item to the toolbar permanently via View → Customize Toolbar...
  • Renamed and re-ordered publishing menu items. New keyboard shortcuts, including returning command-E to its rightful owner in the Find menu. (“Export” is now command-shift-E.)
  • New collection preset, which just has a Raw HTML page as the index page type. This allows you to create an index page where the page type is Raw HTML, not Rich Text.
  • When a trial license has expired, the user is warned appropriately.
  • Invert position of code injection for the bottom of the document body, so that you can do something in the site-level code injection at the beginning, then something 'nested' for the specific page, and then do the un-nesting at the end body injection for the page, and then un-nest at the end body injection the site level. (Example uses: caching and buffering using PHP).
  • Installing plugins by opening plugin file from the Finder now moves, not copies, that file (unless the source of the file is not writable, such as a disk image).
  • The Contact Form no longer chooses destination address automatically: you must make an affirmative choice so you are fully aware of which email address will be used for receiving emails.
  • Renamed “View Published Site” menu item to “Visit Published Site”; added “Visit Published Page” menu item that visits the page currently selected in the site outline.
  • “Publishing Transcript” has been added to Help menu to help diagnose any publishing errors.
  • Publishing can now be effectively paused. If you hit Stop and then later re-publish, Sandvox will resume where it left off, truly publishing only the changed items.
  • A small progress indicator is now displayed on Sandvox dock icon during lengthy operations like publishing and page importing.
  • Amazon List is now also available as a Page type.
  • Added a hidden preference, FTPDataConnectionType, to allow the Active connection type to always be used.
  • Added a hidden preference, ExportShouldReplaceExistingFile, that reverts Export to 1.5 behavior (files are overwritten in place, rather than creating a new folder).
  • Change to how new RSS feeds are published: new feeds are now published as index.rss rather than index.xml. This maintains standards compliance but should increase compatibility with some hosting providers that would provide an RSS feed when a web page was requested!
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Major improvements to media system and image scaling. Scaling now happens asynchronously and on-the-fly, with cached results. During publishing, scaled media is generated asynchronously, which improves repsonsiveness in the program.
  • Major improvements to publishing engine. It now delays connecting to server until it determines there is actual new content to be published. It no longer blocks during long uploads.
  • Many fixes to FTP publishing.
  • Fixes to publishing engine to handle relative paths properly.
  • Improvements to publishing engine for RSS feeds.
  • Implemented date localization for Archive pages and Archive Index pagelet. (Previous versions used system default rather than site language preference.)
  • Fix for long-standing issue where text typed into the raw HTML editor window that didn't match the window's main font was invisible (affected mainly customers working in Japanese).
  • Favicons are being properly generated again.
  • Fix to Host Setup Assistant to better handle relative paths.
  • Fix for issue where Sandvox would become confused about document metadata and refuse to open document.
  • Change to only allow creating a Link List pagelet by dragging a URL to the pagelet area; dragging a URL to the Site Outline now properly creates an External Link page.
  • Updated document window label to “Meta Tags/Keywords” to clarify the multiple purposes of these words.
  • Now appending month and year to meta information for archive pages so that they are unique, rather than copies of the parent page, so that Google will not flag them as duplicate content.
  • Adjusted the Contact Form so that the input fields are more consistent in their widths.
  • RSS feeds are properly limited in length once again to the number of entries on the index page, sorted by date (use Collection inspector to change number of entries)
  • Update to page-bottom (footer) HTML structure so that newly created, as well as older, Sandvox sites will display the footer properly. (Note that some designs will only display a single line of text in the footer; other designs allow the footer to expand into multiple lines.
  • Compatibility fixes to many designs.
  • Made the list-joining code be less aggressive in re-submitting failed signup requests. If a second attempt fails, it will not try again.
  • Fixed the problem reporter for resending saved problem reports that were stored in an older format.
  • “Browse...” in Setup Host now automatically begins at Document Root, if specified; it now works for iDisk.
  • Fix for improper escaping of some URLs in RSS feeds.
  • Improvements to document migrator (for Sandvox 1.2.* documents).
  • Fix to remove orphaned site menu items.
  • Fix to update page modification dates for RSS feed and Google Sitemap.
  • Plugins, including designs, are now sorted without regard to initial punctuation.
  • Maximum height restrictions on in-line images have been removed.
  • Change to raw HTML editor to be more permissive when pasting in certain CSS tags. Pasted HTML will be a bit more literal, but will remove some annoyances where pasted code was lost after editing.
  • Fix for issue where unwanted, invisible pagelets were sometimes created by Sandvox that would upset both previewing and publishing.
  • Fix for issue where publishing to a site with an unusual URL scheme would sometimes cause the Web View to appear empty.
  • Fix to action menu in Amazon List inspector.
  • Fix for issue where External Link pages were not respecting “open in new window” setting if included in a collection.
  • Re-ordered CSS output so that design-specific CSS comes after general, plug-in based CSS, allowing designers to override without specifying “!important”.
  • Updates to Sandvox Help.
  • Many other bug-fixes too numerous to mention!
  • Known Issues:
  • Designs have been checked for overall compatibility with the newly-released Internet Explorer 8.
  • We have identified an incompatibility with the Safari 4 Public Beta with regard to pasting embedded images in both this and earlier versions of Sandvox. We are hoping that Apple will resolve this before their final release of Safari 4; otherwise we will prepare a work-around in the near future. If you experience problems with pasted-in images disappearing after switching pages in Sandvox, we recommend you de-install the Safari 4 Beta for now, or else work around this issue by using drag and drop to embed your images in text pages and pagelets.
  • Due to a change that was implemented to resolve some ambiguities with how different designs handled content entered in the footer area, some third-party designs may require updates for full compatibility with Sandvox 1.6. We have notified all third-party design providers so that they can issue updates soon. Check SandvoxDesigns.com or the Discover Plug-ins window to keep up-to-date on any additional designs you have installed.
