New in Retrospect 8.0.594.1 (Mar 23, 2009)

  • An all-new Mac OS X user interface employs standard Mac OS X interface elements, such as toolbars, scope buttons, search fields, etc.
  • Support for multiple processors/cores and improved throughput to storage devices results in improved performance across the board.
  • The Retrospect console and Retrospect engine are separate components, allowing management and control of multiple Retrospect servers from a single interface.
  • Retrospect Single Server and Multi Server can run multiple, simultaneous activities so that a restore can now be performed without interrupting active backups.
  • Disk Media Sets allow grouping of multiple direct- and network-attached disk resources into a single backup destination, with complete support for spanning backups across multiple disks. Disk Media Sets replace Removable Disk Backup Sets.
  • Periodic grooming of Disk Media Sets recovers space on the backup media by removing outdated files. Users can choose how many past backups to save.
  • New copy operations support staged backups, both disk-to-disk-to-disk (D2D2D) and disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T), with Retrospect’s Smart Incremental and file-level deduplication technologies.
  • Custom reporting, filtering, and sorting are available in all views (Activities, Sources, Past Backups, Media Sets, etc.); a Dashboard provides at-a-glance status of the Retrospect server.
  • Wake-on-LAN support for Mac clients gives Retrospect the ability to wake Mac OS X clients from sleep immediately prior to a backup, resulting in improved energy efficiency and reducing costs.
  • Improved Windows client backup and restore protects system state, registry, and open files on Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows Server 2003/2008. (Backup of open files, such as Outlook PST files and active databases with Retrospect Single Server and Multi Server requires the Windows Open File Backup add-on.)
  • Retrospect 8.0 supports more storage devices than previous Mac versions and now includes faster media slot scanning and automated cleaning tape support for tape libraries.
  • Built-in email notification, improved scheduling, and support for multiple network interfaces are some of the many additional new and improved features in Retrospect 8.0.
  • Retrospect 8.0 also introduces several important terminology.
  • Media Sets are backup destinations made up of one or more pieces of media (disk, optical, etc.).
  • Favorite Folders are user-defined folders that serve as backup sources and restore destinations.
  • Rules are used to filter files/folders/volumes for backup, copy, and restore operations. An example would be a rule that ignores files inside any folder named “Cache”. Rules can be created and modified in the Preferences window (Retrospect menu > Preferences...). The interface for creating rules is far improved over Retrospect 6.1.
  • Copy operations move files/folders from one location to another, retaining their format and folder structure. A copy script would be used to make a bootable clone of a Mac OS X startup disk.
  • Proactive Backup (formerly Backup Server) is Retrospect’s dynamically self-adjusting backup management system that automatically re-prioritizes sources based on their need for a backup and Media Set usage based on availability. Proactive Backup scripts are typically used to back up laptops that come and go from the network or to manage desktop/laptop backups where there are too many sources to protect within timeframe available.
  • Tags allow sources to be grouped by user-defined classifications, such as “Critical Systems,” “Accounting,” “3rd Floor,” and “Laptops.”

New in Retrospect 8.0 Beta 5 (Mar 7, 2009)

  • A handful of stability-reducing bugs have been identified and fixed.
  • Search-for-files restores have been implemented.
  • Client backup performance has been improved.
  • Removable Disk Media Sets have been superseded by Disk Media Sets, which are more flexible in several ways, from sharing space on the media with other applications/uses to support for media grooming.
  • Adding of members to a newly created Disk Media Set has been automated, and Media Sets created using the Backup Assistant are automatically selected as the backup destination.
  • Rules (previously Selectors) have been updated for Leopard and Windows Vista. Along with these updates, several rules present in previous editions of Retrospect have been removed.
  • Public/Private Key support has been added to the Retrospect Client for Mac 6.3 installer. See below for installation/testing instructions.
  • Built-in reports have been changed, as has the selection of which reports show by default as part of the "dashboard" view (shown when a Retrospect server name is highlighted in the sidebar).
  • Column selection and appearance has been improved.
  • Several Windows registry and system state restore bugs have been fixed.
  • Bugs too numerous to list (more than 200) here have been eradicated since the last beta.

New in Retrospect 8.0 Beta 4 (Feb 20, 2009)

  • Stability has been greatly improved, and this build should feel much better.
  • Proactive Backup (old Backup Server) monitoring is now functional, and the Pause/Run/Resume buttons now work as expected.
  • Email notification is working as designed now.
  • Repair and Rebuild Catalog functionality has been added.
  • It is now possible to set a password for the Retrospect engine by going to Preferences>General and clicking the Change Server Password button. Once you set/change the password, you will need to remove the Retrospect engine from the sidebar and re-add it using the new password.
  • Partial archiving of Time Machine data has been added. Retrospect 8.0 cannot restore a functioning Time Machine volume, but it can restore files backed up from a Time Machine volume to any non-Time Machine volume.
  • Backup and restore activities can now be previewed when using the Backup and Restore Assistants.
  • The restore files and folders workflow now has an option to restore to a new folder. When choosing this option, Retrospect may incorrectly warn you on the summary page that all other files will be deleted from the destination. This is not the case.
  • Media request notifications have been improved.
  • Several bugs related to rules (selectors) have been fixed; a handful may still remain.

New in Retrospect 8.0 Beta 3 (Feb 5, 2009)

  • Proactive backup schedules are now functional and scheduling has been improved in general.
  • Tags have been implemented. In addition to user-definable tags for each source, we’ve added three Smart Tags: All Clients, All Local, and All Shares. Tags are now valid source criteria in the Scripts view’s Sources tab.
  • Scripts can now be renamed. Yes, finally!
  • We’ve made the Backup/Copy/Restore Assistant buttons more visible, since some of the people in our usability testing had trouble finding them. We hope you like blue.
  • Status indicator icons have been improved.
  • New scripts and Media Sets are now selected immediately after being created.
  • Optical device support is disabled in this build. We did this because Retrospect 8.0 was locking out all other applications from being able to use the optical drive. To use a Mac’s built-in optical drive, you will need to edit the following file with a text editor...
  • /Library/Application Support/Retrospect/RetrospectEngine.bundle/Contents/MacOS/retro.ini
  • ...and change the DisableOpticalDrivers setting from 1 to 0. Save the retro.ini file and use the Retrospect System Preferences pane to stop and restart the Retrospect server/engine.
  • The Default reports have been added to the “Dashboard” view, which is viewed by clicking on the Retrospect server machine name in the sidebar. The Reports folder has been moved to the last sidebar entry and now defaults to closed. Some reports have also been renamed for space considerations. Removing reports is still not working.
  • Based on beta tester feedback, the scope button behavior has been changed to match functionality in Leopard. Scope buttons are now exclusive, meaning that only one can be selected at a time. “All” buttons have been added to each view and are the default. You may notice some strange deselecting of scope buttons when moving between views. If you notice an unexpected empty view, verify that the All scope button is selected.
  • Encryption functionality has been improved. Please try out some AES-encrypted backups.
  • We’ve also made a large number of general usability improvements and bug fixes (including catching the memory leak present in Beta 2).

New in Retrospect 8.0 Beta 2 (Jan 23, 2009)

  • Tape, removable, and optical drive support has been activated.
  • To use a Mac’s built-in optical drive, it may be necessary to Ctrl/right-click on the drive in the Storage Devices view, choose Create CD Configuration from the contextual pop-up menu and then follow the instructions generated by the Running Custom Configuration activity.
  • This process requires and will use a blank piece of media to complete.
  • Network-attached storage (NAS) devices and other network shares are far better supported as sources and Disk Media Set destinations.
  • Significant improvements have been made to communication between Retrospect’s console and engine components.
  • Default reports have been added for Today’s Scheduled Activities, Recent Activities, Disk Media Set Capacity, Sources Not Backed Up > 7 Days, Sources Never Backed Up, and Sources Nearing Capacity.
  • Preferences, including Retrospect server naming, have been implemented.
  • Media requests and selection for running activities has been improved.
  • Mouse-over tooltips have been added for the main views (i.e., Scripts, Sources, etc.).
  • The bottom toolbar for the various views has been moved above the main list view pane.
  • More than 200 bugs have been fixed since the first beta release, including several reported by users in the beta test forum.

New in Retrospect 8.0 Beta 1 (Jan 8, 2009)

  • EMC Retrospect 8.0 is able to run multiple activities simultaneously, whereas version 6.1 can only run one.
  • Version 8.0 has advanced backup-to-disk capabilities that include multiple local and network disks per Media Set, usage/capacity quotas on a per-member basis (a member is a disk or volume that belongs to a backup Media Set), as well as disk-to-disk-to tape and disk-to-disk-to-disk backups.
  • Snapshots (the listing of all files present on a source volume during a backup) and sessions (the actual files copied during a backup operation) have been combined into Past Backups.
  • Version 8.0 has custom reporting everywhere, whereas version 6.1 only offered a single, static report.
  • FTP backups, a feature in 6.1, will not be in the initial 8.0 release, though updated FTP backup will be added in a future update.

New in Retrospect 6.2.229 (Jul 1, 2008)

  • New drive support.
  • Fixed a problem that could cause CD/DVD autoconfigure to randomly hang.
  • Fixed an error -100 when trying to erase unformatted DVD RW or Blu-Ray media
  • Fixed a problem introduced in RDU 6.1.10.100 that caused DVD-R media to fail in supported drives.

New in Retrospect 6.1.138 (Feb 22, 2008)

  • Retrospect Express asserts if connection to mounted volume is lost: This release fixes an assert that would occur when backing up to a File backup set stored on a mounted volume if connection to the volume was lost during the backup.
  • Improved autolaunching: This release improves reliability of Retrospect Express autolaunching when the computer is left on for extended periods of time.
  • Matching Improved: Matching has been updated, resulting in fewer files that need to be copied.
  • Improved support for NAS devices: Retrospect Express will now correctly mount networked drives that are used as sources or destinations for backup. See the EMC Retrospect Knowledgebase for additional information on backing up to NAS devices.
  • Multiple instances of Retrospect: In previous versions of Retrospect Express it was possible to launch multiple copies of the application. This problem has been fixed in this release.
