New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 17.0.0 Build 12912 (Nov 16, 2022)

  • Super Select AI Tool — Applying adjustments to areas in your photos couldn’t be easier than the new Super Select AI Tool. Just tap on the areas you want to adjust and then pick an adjustment. Want the sky darker, click-click-done. How about making the grass more green, click-click-done. Want to blur the background? You get the idea. It’s an incredibly fast and natural way to work that will completely change the way you interact with your photos.
  • Mask AI — Say goodbye to tedious brushing. Mask AI uses state-of-art machine learning to segment photos, identifying objects like people and animals, as well as regions like the sky, mountains, trees, water, and ground. When masking layers, effects, or local adjustments, you can select subjects or regions from the list. Mask AI will create great-looking masks instantly. You can even choose regions to apply filters or adjustments to when you add them, making it easy to get just the adjustment you want.
  • AI Adaptive Presets — Presets just got even more powerful. Now they can target common subjects like people, water, skies, and buildings automatically. The awesome new AI Adaptive presets give you one-click solutions to tough problems like brightening the subject, darkening the sky, or adding detail to foliage. Best of all, you can create your own AI Adaptive presets.
  • Quick Mask AI — We’ve rebuilt the Quick Mask tool to make it faster and more intuitive. The AI segments the photo into regions and objects automatically. Then simply click on the segments you want to mask, and it builds a high-quality mask automatically, no brushing needed.
  • Tack Sharp — State-of-the-art sharpening and deblurring is now part of NoNoise AI, your single solution for removing noise and sharpening photos simultaneously. It can detect and remove motion blur as well as save out-of-focus shots. Stop throwing out the perfect shot just because it’s a little soft.
  • Keyword AI — No one likes adding keywords, but we do like finding our photos. Keyword AI in Browse uses AI semantics and metadata to suggest keywords for you automatically. It can see hundreds of objects and regions, identify locations, find people, and understand photographic properties. These all become searchable terms to help you find your photos faster.
  • Content-Aware Crop — If you have ever had to crop or level a photo and have lost important details near the edges, the new content-aware crop will be a lifesaver. It can expand the photo canvas and fill the new edges with realistic detail.
  • Improved Content-Aware Perfect Eraser — The Perfect Eraser, the perfect tool for removing larger distractions, has been improved with a more accurate algorithm and is faster on modern computers.

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 16.0.1 (Sep 27, 2021)

  • New Sky Swap AI — Automatically detects the sky in photos and creates a mask. Select from one of the over 100 included skies or import your own. You have complete control over the mask used to blend the sky and can use the masking tools you are already familiar with to adjust it as needed. You can adjust the sky to blend better with your foreground, even blur the sky to simulate a long exposure. Not only does it replace the sky, but it will adjust the foreground lighting and color and add a reflection of the sky to water found in the foreground. You can even copy and paste to other layers for ultimate control.
  • New Time-Lapse Creation — The New time-lapse creation dialog can quickly create time-lapse videos from still photo sequences. You can preview your results right in the dialog and create quick proof versions or high-quality final results. It detects when the camera is bumped and can filter out misaligned frames. It also detects changes in exposure and can even them out automatically, making day to night videos possible. Finally, you can increase or decrease the speed to stretch out short sequences into longer, smooth videos.
  • Integration of ON1 NoNoise AI — ON1’s powerful, AI-based noise removal is now built into the core raw processing in ON1 Photo RAW. You can use it on the fly and non-destructively, just like any other raw processing adjustment—no need to create intermediate DNG or TIF files.
  • New Photoshop Plugin Host — You can now run plugins made for Adobe Photoshop right inside ON1 Photo RAW. If you have been collecting plugins for years, now you can access them and what makes them unique right inside the app where you do the rest of your work, no need to launch or subscribe to Photoshop.
  • Newly Retooled Export — We took over 100 suggestions from our users and have rebuilt Export from the ground up. It is the most powerful Export and image converter you can imagine. First, presets are more powerful. You can run them right from the file menu, and you can run more than one simultaneously. There are more options for everything. In File Type, you can now create DNGs or export copies of the original. The file renaming is infinitely flexible, as is the creation of destinations. You can now use multiple watermarks at the same time and use text or graphics for them. Resizing is more powerful and flexible than ever. And finally, you have control over what metadata is written to exported files.
  • New Line Mask Tool — Similar to a polygonal lasso or pen tool, it can quickly create masks using straight lines. You can now curve the lines, add and remove points, or change the feather and opacity of the shapes you create anytime, even after creation. They are entirely non-destructive and work hand-in-hand with the other powerful masking tools in ON1 Photo RAW.
  • Backup and Restore — Prepare for the worst and recover easily with the backup and restore features. They back up all your work, settings, albums, presets, and extras. You can use the restore feature to recover from a disaster on your computer or migrate everything to a new computer.
  • Favorites in Browse — We have added a Favorites pane to Browse to help you access frequently used folders easier. Drag and drop a folder you often access to the Favorites pane to create a shortcut to it. You can navigate through the favorites subfolder quickly in the Favorites pane without having to worry about all the folders above it.
  • Customizable Thumbnails — Now, you have great flexibility over the appearance of the thumbnails in Browse. You can control what is displayed on them, how big the labels are and when they appear. You can choose between light or dark themes and also between regular or square thumbnails.
  • Gestures — Zooming, panning, and changing photos is more natural with a smooth, animated experience, with full gesture support on macOS trackpads and Windows touch-screen devices.
  • Apple Silicon Native — ON1 Photo RAW now runs natively on Apple Silicon-based macOS computers.

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 2019 13.6.0 (Aug 1, 2019)

  • Adds support for Canon CR3 Raw files and addresses a handful of bugs. It is recommended that all owners of ON1 Photo RAW 2019 download this update.
  • Canon CR3 Support — This release adds support for uncompressed Canon CR3 format Raw files from these cameras: Canon EOS R, Canon EOS RP, Canon PowerShot SX70, Canon EOS M50, Canon EOS Rebel SL3 (250D/Kiss X10). We are still working on the compressed version or CR3 files (cRAW).
  • Added support for the Nikon A1000 and Olympus TG-6 cameras.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause instability with Intel 5xx series video cards on Windows.
  • Improved brushing performance, especially on low-end Windows video cards. This is an area we continue to improve on.
  • Fixed several issues with keywording.
  • The installer and application are now notarized by Apple.
  • Several other performance and stability improvements.

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 2019 13.5.1 (Jun 18, 2019)

  • Capture Date Missing — We have discovered an issue where capture date metadata is failing to parse correctly, leaving the capture metadata field blank. For new photos or photos in cataloged folders this will correct itself. For photos that have already been browsed and the capture date is missing, use the “Read Metadata from Photo” command. Note, this command has been updated to preserve the current star, flag and color ratings and will merge keywords.
  • Crashing whilst Browsing — If your sort order is set to Capture Date, the above issue could also lead to a crash when parsing capture metadata.
  • Search and Smart Albums by Date — Searching by date may fail to find any or all expected photos if the capture date metadata is missing. This also affects Smart Albums that search by date.
  • Thumbnails and Previews Showing Ghosting or Artifacts — In some cases, after editing a photo and returning to Browse, the thumbnail and fit-screen preview could have shown ghosting or artifacts. When you open the photo again into Edit it looks correct. This appears to affect smaller, non-high high-dpi displays more.
  • Exported Photos Show Ghosting or Artifacts — This shares the same root cause as the issue above.
  • Keywords — There were several issues with keywords including duplicates with different case, search results not finding what they should and issues with deleting.
  • Border Fitting — In 2019.5 we added a new option to the Borders, Textures and Vignette filters to adjust how the fit. In the past, they have always matched the layer. If you used the transform tool to make a layer larger than the canvas, the border would not be visible. We added the Fit to Canvas option to these filters so you can lock the border to the edge of the canvas in these cases. Unfortunately, this has caused confusion when you crop or make the layer smaller. We have made it intelligent and will turn this option on or off dynamically when needed now.
  • Canvas size issues with medium and small Nikon RAW files from the D850, Z 6, Z 7.
  • On macOS 10.14, the app jumping up when you are working on other apps.
  • HDR could crash on save
  • Several other performance and stability improvements

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 2019 13.5.0 (Jun 18, 2019)

  • In April we announced the upcoming release of ON1 Photo RAW 2019.5 and today we are excited to say it’s officially available for the ON1 community. Since the first release of ON1 Photo RAW, we’ve given our community a say in the features and technologies they want in their photo editor of choice. Every feature and improvement we’ve made in the latest release is a result of community input through the ON1 Photo RAW Project. We want to take this chance to say, thank you. We’ve come a long way and are excited for what the future holds here at ON1.
  • One of the most significant improvements in the latest release is performance and speed in several areas. Some of these optimizations give customers up to a 50x improvement compared to the previous version. Here are a few of the areas where customers will notice a significant increase in speed.
  • Preset Previews — Up to 3x faster — When navigating through presets and previewing each effect on the photo
  • JPG to JPG Export — Up to 2.5x faster — This is an example of creating “proof” sized JPGs for a client and takes advantage of a new resizing algorithm
  • RAW to JPG Export — Up to 2.5x faster — This is an example of creating JPGs for social media with your watermark
  • Export in Edit — Up to 5x faster — This is an example of saving a full-sized file for sharing or editing in another app
  • Export Edited Photo — Up to 50x faster — This is an example of exporting a large JPG from a previously edited 45MP RAW photo
  • New Features in Version 2019.5:
  • Dual Mode — Easily undock the Browse Module from the Edit Module, use a second display, or make sales or client presentations on a projector or TV. The dual mode allows photographers to customize how they want to work when browsing and editing photos.
  • Edit History — A full edit history is added when working on photos. Each editing step is viewable, along with the ability to roll-back and compare adjustments. Photographers can also revert to the beginning of the editing session.
  • Settings Applied Info — Photographers can now quickly view which modules, tools, and filters are applied to a photo. This non-linear approach also allows photographers to double-click on a setting and jump straight to it for further adjustments.
  • Selective Sync — Enhanced granularity in which settings to apply when syncing your settings (or pasting and saving a preset) has been added. For example, photographers can drill down and only apply a white balance adjustment. The ability to sync cropping, retouching and brush strokes between photos is also be included.
  • Hierarchical Keywords — The master keyword list now supports nesting keywords inside of other keywords. Nested keywords allow photographers to organize keywords as they see fit. Importing a list of nested keywords from other apps like Adobe Lightroom® is also supported.
  • Apple® Photos® Extension Enhancements — Integration with Apple Photos now supports the full raw data, improving adjustments to tone and color. It also supports re-editable non-destructive editing and more native ON1 Photo RAW features like layers, crop, and text.
  • First Launch Experience — If it is your first time using ON1 Photo RAW, there are new walkthroughs to help you learn the basics. This gives photographers a running start and directs them where to learn more.
  • Tool Tips — Tool tip animations are added to improve the usability and shorten the learning curve for each tool.
  • Additional Enhancements in Version 2019.5:
  • Layers Enhancements — Create a new canvas of any size or change the size of the existing canvas.
  • Text Tool Enhancements — Add a background color to a text box and control its opacity. Easily control the character and line spacing. New options also allow photographers to duplicate and change the order of text boxes and automatically insert text from a photo’s metadata.
  • Performance Improvements — Zooming, panning, and brushing are now much faster. A new preview quality option can help increase performance on lower-end and integrated video cards as well. Export is now up to 10x faster when resizing or exporting a photo or photos already edited.
  • Local Adjustments — The Local Adjustments tools are faster to brush and adjust.
  • Windows High-DPI — Support for high-dpi displays on Windows is dramatically improved. The scaling of the fonts and controls work much better, especially on 4k displays and laptops.
  • Keywording — Keywords are now easier to search, add, delete, and modify. Also, keywords are now case sensitive.
  • Soft Proofing in Resize — The soft-proofing feature is also be available in ON1 Resize (Genuine Fractals®).
  • Drag and Drop from Film Strip — Drag and drop photos from the film strip to add them as new layers.
  • Increased Thumbnail Size Range — The range of thumbnail size is increased, so photographers can go all the way up to two giant thumbnails or down to tiny thumbnails to survey an entire folder.
  • Default Photo Location — Now control the default photo location in Browse. This is where ON1 Photo RAW looks to find photos instead of the Pictures folder.
  • Preview the Resize Algorithm — When using the Genuine Fractals algorithm, photographers can preview the resulting quality at 100% zoom to more accurately adjust the options and sharpening.
  • Persistent Crop Preset State — The crop tool settings are persistent and remembered across photos.
  • Search by Adjustments Added — Search for photos based on specific adjustments applied such as cropped, retouched, etc.
  • Update to Lightroom Migration — The Lightroom Migration tool now migrates the pick and reject flags.
  • Added support for these cameras — Sony SLT-A55V, A33, A6400, RX100VA, Olympus OM-D E-M1X, Panasonic FZ1000 M2, TZ95 (ZS80, TZ96, TZ97), S1, S1R, Ricoh GR III. Note: we are still working on Canon CR3 support and it is a high priority to come in the next free update to ON1 Photo RAW

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 2018 12.0.0.4006 (Nov 27, 2017)

  • ON1 Photo RAW 2018 is a major upgrade! Here are some of the biggest improvements and fixes:
  • HDR Merge — Create stunning High Dynamic Range photos that merge all the tonality from a bracket of photos. From the deepest shadows, to the most subtle clouds, in a fraction of the time of other HDR apps. Automatically aligns photos and removes ghosting from motion between exposures. Super-fast merge only takes seconds to preview, instead of over a minute like other HDR apps. Gives you full non-destructive editing with natural results that can be turned up to 11 for a surreal look.
  • Panorama Merge — Combine multiple photos into a single panoramic or matrix photo. Automatically aligns photos, even if they are not shot on a tripod, and blends them together seamlessly.
  • Versions — Versions are virtual copies of the same photo. Each version can have it’s own non-destructive settings, including crop, retouching and adjustments. Versions work just like any other photo without taking up more space on your computer.
  • Updated UI — Clean and modern UI where your photo is the center of attention. You can name the filters and layers so it’s easier to keep track of your work. You can even select your own accent color!
  • Folders Groups — Easily create a new folder from a selection of photos. You can copy or move the photos into the new folder. You can also set the photo that appears at the top of a folder for the preview. This is perfect for grouping pano and HDR brackets as well as versions.
  • Additional Camera & Lens Support — Added support for the Nikon D850, Olympus EM-10 III, Fujifilm X-E3, Sony DSC RX10 IV, Olympus E-M10 III, Panasonic DMC-G85, plus a ton of new lenses.
  • Important Bug Fixes — We fixed tons of bugs reported by our loyal users to make the app faster, more stable and easier to use.
  • Improved Local Adjustments — The powerful local adjustments filters make it easy to burn and dodge, paint-in more detail or contrast, etc. We have improved the local adjustments with these handy new options:
  • Paint with Color — You can now paint with a color. This can be a solid color, perfect for skin smoothing and making annotation layers, or you can paint with just the color and leave the underlying luminosity in place to change the color of objects like eyes.
  • Selectively add or remove noise — Now you can paint away noise in areas like skies or add noise or an artistic effect.
  • Masking Improvements — Masking is the way you make selections and selectively apply adjustments in Photo RAW. We pride ourselves in offering the best tools for masking and they just keep getting better:
  • We have added the Blur and Chisel Mask tools to Effects. The Blur tool is perfect for softening or feathering a mask selectively. The Chisel tool lets you push or pull the edge selectively, to remove a halos.
  • There is also a new set of powerful global mask editing tools. These include the new mask Density and Feather sliders which allow you change the density or opacity of mask as well as blur a mask to soften it.
  • We’ve taken luminosity masking to the next level as well. Now you can adjust the levels of a mask to increase the contrast or ship the brightness as well as set a tonal window to only affect a certain zone. These empower you to target just the area you want, based on your photo.
  • Did we mention you can make a mask from a color range selection too. And all of these masking options are re-editable and non-destructive.

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 2018 12.0.0.3956 Beta 2 (Oct 18, 2017)

  • Highlights:
  • Reduced the preflight requirements for HDR — You can now use different ISOs and mix changes in shutter-speed and ISO in your HDR brackets. We will also let photos without metadata through as well, such as manual focus lenses or lenses used in an adapter.
  • New Default Looks for HDR — When you use ON1 HDR the first time you can choose your default HDR processing preference. This tunes the initial settings to your preference. You can always change this preference in the Default Look pop-up. We continue to improve the HDR algorithms as well.
  • Pano Exposure Compensation — We now detect and try to compensate for exposure differences between frames in a panorama shot in automatic modes. We are finding this works pretty well most of the time. We still have work to do to correct for white balance issues as well as extreme edge fall-off from some lenses. It’s always best to shoot on a tripod, overlap your photos 30% and shoot in manual on a consistent white balance. Also shoot with your lens stopped-down to reduce edge fall off. You can adjust your frames and turn on lens correction before using Panorama as well.
  • Name Filters and Adjustment Layers — You can now double-click on a filter name in Effects or an Adjustment Layer and add your own label as a prefix. This is handy to identify the purpose of a layer such as Sky or Water, or Skin and Eyes.
  • Crash on Export — There was a nasty crash when exporting (or going to Layers, Resize, Print, Share, Send to, etc.) that could occur after using a retouching tool. We squashed it.
  • Pink HDR Files from Fuji XTrans Cameras — We had a ton of feedback from Fujifilm camera users who had a pink cast when using the new HDR feature. We have squashed that one too.
  • Midtones Slider — We renamed and moved the new Brightness slider to the Midtones slider. This adjusts the midtone brightness and is handy for adjusting HDR photos.
  • Tuned Advanced Masking — We have improved the new Window and Color Range masking options to select and feather ranges better.

Large previews are generated in the background to make browsing much faster too. The powerful database behind Cataloged Folders enabled fast searching and viewing across folders and drives.

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 9.5.0.1640 (Apr 14, 2015)

  • Technical details and new feature list:
  • BROWSE ENHANCEMENTS:
  • Persistent Thumbnail Cache: Stores thumbnails are previews on disk so that when you go back to folder a second time it loads much faster. You can control the size and location in the preferences.
  • Improved Detail View: Our goal was to reduce or eliminate seeing pixelated previews in Detail View. It now generates a larger preview up front so you will see less pixelated previews. It also reads ahead and behind so that when you move between images there is no pixelation. It also continues to process thumbnails and previews in the background.
  • Improved Grid View: The thumbnail grid has been rewritten. It should be faster changing folders. You can also scroll through large folders with no detail.
  • Albums: Create and manage lists of photos that can live anywhere, similar to a collection in Lightroom. Watch Videos
  • Crash Logger: Automatically logs crashes and hangs and reports them back to on1.
  • Scratch Disk: You can now configure where you scratch disk is located. This is handy if your boot volume is a small SSD. Adjust this in the preferences.
  • Mask Enhancements
  • Line Mask Tool: Create or edit masks with a point-to-point polygon tool. Click around the shape you want to mask, then click in the middle to mask that area.
  • Double-click on Blur and Chisel: You can now (or finally again) apply the Blur Mask and Chisel Mask tools to the entire mask by double-clicking on the tool icons.
  • Luminosity Mask: You create a luminosity mask or copy the luminosity to paste it as a mask onto other layers. The commands live in the Layer and or Mask menus.
  • Mask Contextual Menu: When you right click on a mask thumbnail in Layers or Effects there is now a contextual menu with the same options as the Mask menu.
  • Feather in or out with Blur Mask tool: There is now a mode option in the tool options bar for the Blur Mask tool. When it blurs it can either lighten or darken so that the blur goes inside or outside the current mask instead of just along the edge. Handy finishing touch for hair.
  • “O” key now toggles the mask preview on and off like Lightroom.
  • PORTRAIT IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Faster Loading, like three seconds instead of 12!
  • Faster Control Point Adjustments. You can still get it to beep occasionally. We will continue to improve this for Suite 10.
  • Updated Control Point Overlay.
  • GPU Processing for Perfect Effects: We are in the process of converting everything in Perfect Effects to process in the GPU (video card). This make it much faster to adjust the sliders and use tools. For Suite 9.5 the following filters have been updated:
  • Blending Options
  • Antique
  • Color Enhancer
  • Cross Process
  • Lens Flare
  • Photo Filter
  • Split Tone
  • Vintage
  • Vignette
  • MISC ENHANCEMENTS:
  • Hold down command and option when you launch to delete preferences.
  • Colorize and Invert options added to the Borders and Textures panes in Effects. This gives you more control over what color you want for basic borders like Simple and Emulsion.
  • Crop settings now sticky across sessions and modules.
  • 100% Actual Size option is now available in the Print dialog.
  • Brushes should now behave more like Photoshop. They feather equally in and out instead of just in. The brush profile has also been modified to act more like Photoshop.
  • Color Temp control has been adjusted to be more yellow, less orange. It now tracks closer to Lightroom when you are working on a raw file
  • Suppress Edit What dialog (coming soon). When you use the Suite as a standalone you will not be prompted for your file handling options every time you open a file. These options are being moved to the preferences instead.

New in ON1 Photo RAW 2024 9.0.0.1216 (Nov 1, 2014)

  • An overhauled Browse module, which adds lightning-fast previews of RAW files; new rating, ranking and keyword tools; and sophisticated filtering capabilities. These features are designed to help you cull and sort through photos quickly after a shoot, without having to wait for previews to be generated. You can then edit your photos using the Suite, or can easily send them to a secondary photo tool like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Apple Aperture — with metadata and keywords intact.
  • A new Smart Photo feature, which lets you re-edit your photos — with previous settings intact — after saving and closing them. All of your editing steps are saved with a Smart Photo, so you can make subtle (or major) changes to a photo at a later date. And Smart Photos use the standard Photoshop file format, so you are assured of maximum compatibility.
  • To help you create better selections, all the masking and selection tools have been improved and integrated throughout the Suite’s modules. And, Perfect Layers and Perfect Mask have been combined into a single module, streamlining the process of compositing photos.
  • We’ve also added a new Quick Mask brush: run it over an area that you want to select (or remove), and a detailed mask is automatically created. This is perfect for replacing backgrounds or adding a custom look to part of your photo.
  • You asked for it, we added it: noise reduction is now part of the Suite. Reduce noise in your photos while maintaining important details. You can even selectively apply noise reduction to different parts of a photo, such as the shadows or highlights.
  • A new Lens Flare filter in Perfect Effects lets you get that popular “shot into the sun” look and add flares ranging from subtle to bold.
  • Faster processing; the Suite is now up to 2x faster than Suite 8 in many instances.
