  • VoiceOver — When VoiceOver is active, clicking on the Zoom toolbar button should no longer cause a crash.
  • Fonts — All supported font weights per font family should now be useable when running under OS X Yosemite.
  • Fonts — Files using certain fonts that are not available on the current device should now open.
  • Columns — Entering dates with the date calendar should now preserve the year even when the display format does not display it.
  • Help Viewer — The Help Viewer should now behave properly when running under OS X Yosemite.
  • Misc — The Welcome document should now have the correct appearance when opened from the Help menu with the OS X Yosemite dark menu bar turned on.
  • Word Export — The column style of the outline column should now apply to the export.
  • Word Export — Notes should now use the text alignment set in the document instead of always being left aligned.
  • Word Export — When row level styles contain nothing but a named style, those attributes should now be applied correctly to the export.

New in OmniOutliner 4.1.2 Build 214457 (Aug 6, 2014)

  • FIXED:
  • Stability — Fixed a crash encountered on launch and on document loading under rare circumstances.
  • Stability — Fixed an issue with opening files that somehow had a named style applied to a row twice.
  • Dates — Fixed a bug with storing dates under certain region settings such as United Kingdom, 12-hour clock.
  • Exports — The file extension should now always correctly change when switching export formats.

New in OmniOutliner 4.1.1 Build 212611 (Jul 9, 2014)

  • Corrects a couple technical issues for the Mac App Store.

New in OmniOutliner 4.1 Build 165.4 (Jun 25, 2014)

  • NEW:
  • Styles — The Row padding control has been added to the standard feature set.
  • Toolbar icons — New toolbar icons with color have been added! Switch to Graphite appearance in System Preferences to use monochrome versions of those icons.
  • Row linking — (PRO) Create links to rows to quickly navigate or reference other sections. To make a link, select a row and use Edit > Copy As Link. Paste this where ever you’d like to make a hyperlink to that row. The focused state will also be preserved in the link. Links will function in OmniOutliner standard if they exist but the Copy as Link option is a Pro feature.
  • Word Export — (PRO) A second MS Word (docx) export has been added, Microsoft Word (indented). This will always preserve the outline structure by setting the indentation on each line.
  • UPDATED:
  • Word Export — (PRO) A number of updates and fixes have been made to the Microsoft Word (outline) and Microsoft Word (indented) exports:
  • Microsoft Word (outline) has the same basic functionality as the previous MS Word export but will now open in Outline view by default.
  • Row numbering support has significantly improved. Under most circumstances it should match the numbering you see in OmniOutliner. If row numbering is used, the Microsoft Word (outline) format will indent your text to keep the numbering readable. Note– MS Word only supports up to nine outline levels, so, for level 10 and deeper, any row numbering will be inserted at the beginning of the line as normal text and may not correctly align with the other outline levels.
  • The outline column will always be the exported column instead of the left-most column.
  • Fixed a bug with exporting font colors of certain values.
  • Multiple identical URLs in a document should now export properly.
  • Fixed a bug with preserving some linked attachments.
  • Interface — The method for checking if you have Pro features available has changed. Simply choose OmniOutliner > About OmniOutliner for details on the current version and licensing state of the app.
  • Menus — The contextual menu will no longer show options that are disabled.
  • Attachments — Improved support for linked attachments. There are still a couple bugs remaining but new linked attachments should work under most circumstances. Previous existing attachments, including those from OmniOutliner 3 will bring up a file browser to the directory containing that file asking you to select the file so permissions to access that file can be saved.
  • FIXED:
  • Exports — Fixed a crash with HTML, HTML (Dynamic), and MS Word (HTML) exports that would occur when a named style inherits from another named style of the same name.
  • Export — The writeFormattedNumbers key for export plug-ins is working again. This was causing HTML and HTML (Dynamic) to export unformatted numbers, sometimes showing much more decimal precision than expected.
  • Styles — The When adding a row, use siblings’ style setting should now always behave predictably when on. Named styles will no longer carry over to the sibling when it is unchecked.
  • Stability — Rows should no longer remain selected when moved into a collapsed section. This prevents a crash that would occur when trying to modify that hidden row.

New in OmniOutliner 4.0.6 Build 163.6 (May 1, 2014)

  • Fixes a crash that could occur while merging a parent and child row.

New in OmniOutliner 4.0.5 Build 163.5 (Apr 23, 2014)

  • Outline view – Switching sections should no longer leave other rows that are not in the focused view visible.
  • Stability – The above fix should prevent the most frequently reported crash that would happen randomly with any simple action.
  • Hyperlinks – Editing the display name of a link and then editing the row again before saving should no longer cause the links to be lost.
  • Sidebar – The selected state in the sidebar will once again be removed when you unfocus.

New in OmniOutliner 4.0.4 Build 163.4 (Apr 3, 2014)

  • Fixed:

  • Performance — The performance of typing in long documents of certain configurations has been greatly improved. More optimizations are coming but if you have a file that is still performing badly and can share it with us, please send a copy to [email protected]. Thank you!
  • Attachments — Edits made to an embedded attachment during the same session as it was attached should now always be saved.
  • Attachments — Linked attachments will now immediately appear as a generic file attachment instead of just after reopening the file. We will be looking at improving linked attachment support in future releases.
  • Export — When characters are present that can not be represented in the plain text encoding selected, an error message reflecting that will now properly display instead of causing a hang.

New in OmniOutliner 4.0.2 Build 163.2 (Feb 7, 2014)

  • Updated:
  • Interface — Here’s how to check if you have OmniOutliner Pro. Open the app menu (next to the Apple menu); if you see the item “Pro Purchased”, then you’ve got Pro! If not, you’re using OmniOutliner Standard. Either way, thanks!

If you have made edits to any of these templates you will now have two copies of them, your edited version and the updated copy.
  • Batch find — The styling of the search results has been updated to be more visible.
  • Columns — Editing of a column header can now be started with a single-click after the column is selected instead of a double-click.

  • Fixed:
  • Sidebar — Row numbering now shows in the section list.
  • Sidebar — The button to toggle the visibility of the Styles section now has the proper mouse down state.
  • Sidebar — When confirming editing of the name of a named style, that named style should now remain selected.
  • Editing — It should no longer be possible to create a peer of the focused root which resulted in confusing states.
  • Sorting — When a new row is created while sorting is applied, it should always be visible.
  • Sorting — Sorting should now be properly updated when editing on a row has ended.
  • Performance — Batch find results will no longer be updated unless the results are being displayed.
  • Undo — When an outdent action on a row is undone, that row will now be properly visible instead of the parent being collapsed.
  • Styles — When the indent children setting is changed, all rows should now properly redisplay in the correct position.
  • Styles — Note background color should no longer be overridden by the row level background color.
  • Styles — When the preference When adding a row, use siblings’ style is on, pasting copied rows should now retain the proper styles.
  • Audio recording — The aspect ratio of the recording bar button images has been corrected.
  • Zoom — Audio recording attachments should now always display at the correct size when the zoom scale changes.
  • Word docx export — Grayscale colorspace background values should now set a more appropriate highlight color.
  • HTML export — When inline image attachments are sized down to fit the column width, they will now also appear at this size in the HTML and HTML (Dynamic) exports.
  • HTML export — The visibility state of image attachments in the HTML and HTML (Dynamic) exports should now match the OmniOutliner document.
  • HTML export — Attachments with semicolons in the name should now get properly encoded links in the HTML and HTML (Dynamic) exports.
  • Text exporters — Plain text and RTF exporters should now honor the visibility setting of the column headers.
  • Copy/Paste — When a multi-column row is pasted after columns are rearranged, the column values should now appear in the correct locations.
  • Copy/Paste — When rows are pasted to a different document, hidden columns in both the source and destination document will no longer be taken into consideration.
  • Templates — The File > Save As Template option is now properly available when running the standard version of OmniOutliner.
  • Help documentation — Some typos and errors in the help documentation have been corrected as well as a change to the width of the text to better accommodate smaller screen resolutions.
  • Stability — Fixed a crash that could occur if an update, such as through OmniPresence, happened and the cursor was sitting in a number column.
  • Notes — The Enter key should now properly end editing for inline notes.
  • Notes — When notes are set to display in-pane, it should now be possible to bring back the note pane after dragging it all the way closed.
  • Quick Look — When Quick Looking OmniOutliner files, inline images should now be visible.
  • Attachments — When opening an embedded attachment, the embedded copy should now always open instead of the original.

New in OmniOutliner 4.0 Build 162.8 (Jan 16, 2014)

  • Some highlights of the new features include:
  • Zooming — Text can now be magnified on screen without changing your print layout.
  • A brand-spanking new UI — Yes, that’s right folks, we’ve totally redesigned the UI in OmniOutliner 4. Out with the old paradigms and in with the new.
  • Resource Browser — Use the new Resource Browser to browse recently edited files, choose templates, apply themes to existing documents, and import your templates from OmniOutliner 3.
  • Sidebar — We’ve done away with the old style drawer from OmniOutliner 3 and have created a new Sidebar that lists the Contents of your outline, Styles, and more!
  • Inspector redesign — OmniOutliner’s redesigned Inspector window is cleaner and fresher.
  • Styles — To be more in line with OmniOutliner 2 for iPad, we’ve retooled the way styles work to create a great cross-platform experience.
  • Theming — You can now apply the styles from a template (its theme) to your outlines.
  • Column visibility (PRO) — Have a document with a lot of columns that you only need to access every now and then? We’ve added the ability to hide columns when you don’t need them, and then make reappear when you want them back.
  • Smart Match technology — Pop-up List-styled columns benefit from the Smart Match technology we’ve used in OmniFocus. As you type characters in a Pop-up List cell, OmniOutliner tries to guess which item you mean—and the characters you enter don’t have to be at the beginning or contiguous. If you type a new value that you’d like to add to the Pop-up List, just enter Command-Return to add the value to that list.
  • Hyperlinks — URLs are converted into real links so you can click and open them in your default browser. What’s more, if you don’t want or like this behavior, you can toggle this off in OmniOutliner’s preferences.
  • Attachments — You can attach pretty much anything to an OmniOutliner document: images, video, audio, even other OmniOutliner files. Attached images autoscale to the column width, and you can attach audio clips which play right within the Outline. What’s more, we’ve added a new attachment popover to replace OmniOutliner 3’s tagging, so you can change the visibility of attached images, use alternative text rather than a filename, and direct how OmniOutliner 4 opens attachments.

New in OmniOutliner 3.9 (Aug 20, 2009)

  • New Features:
  • Each row in the OmniOutliner document is assigned its corresponding outline level. So when you go to outline view in Word, you will see the same structure as in OO. In other views you will see a flat list (the exception to this is if you used row labeling).
  • Row level styles, if any exist, will be used for the corresponding heading styles in Word.
  • Note text is not assigned an outline level and is treated like normal text but with the character style "Note Style" applied to it which is generated from the note style in the OO document.
  • Styles applied to the 'Whole Document' style in OO will be applied to the 'Normal' paragraph style in Word.
  • If any named styles are applied to text in the OO doc, those style characteristics will be applied directly to the text in Word. Word only supports having one style of each type (paragraph/character) applied to any given text so they can not be safely used as styles in Word.
  • Only the left most column will be exported. Columns can be rearranged before exporting if a different column is desired for export.
  • Embedded files
  • Embedded file attachment support is limited due to the differences between the apps.
  • Currently only images and PDFs are supported and only if they don't contain spaces in the file name. Pages will display images that contain spaces in the file name however.
  • Movies will not be supported and will simply show the name of the file that is suppose to be there.
  • Other embedded attachments are currently ignored as most other formats are not supported by Word when embedded.
  • Linked or aliased files will work the same as they do with OO, it will take the same absolute path to the file.
  • Row numbering can not be correctly supported due to the major differences in implementation. An exported file that uses row numbering will show a numbering label in Word but it may not be the correct value.
  • Background colors are converted to one of 16 colors as that is all you're allowed to select in Word.
  • Due to MS Word's limit of 9 outline levels, all rows at level 10 or higher will be set to level 9. They will still use the correct row style though.
  • New unsaved documents will now be backed up in the event of a crash. OmniOutliner now uses Apple's auto-save feature that became available in 10.4. This means that the backup copy will now be saved as " (Autosaved).oo3" into the same folder that the OmniOutliner document is saved in. Backups will no longer be saved inside the document file wrapper. For new never manually saved documents, the backup will be saved to "~/Library/Autosave Information".

In the event of a crash, the next time you launch OmniOutliner, all backup copies will automatically load. There will no longer be a dialog box asking which version you want to open. If you don't want the backup copy, you can use the revert to saved option or close and reopen the document at which point the backup will be deleted.
  • OmniOutliner now uses the new OmniSoftwareUpdate. This provides the ability to update to a new version from within the app and have it installed automatically.
  • Added a new pasteboard type "OmniDataOnlyTabularPboardType" that is compliant with OmniGraphSketcher. It is a TSV format that flattens the copied data and ignores checkboxes and handles.
  • Added a duplicate row function under the Edit menu.
  • Added a two-week fully-functional trial period for unlicensed users. Trial licenses will no longer be used. After the trial period has ended, you will only be able to view files and export, editing will no longer be possible.
  • The subfolder AppleScripts are located in (if any) will appear in the name of the script when viewed in the customize toolbar sheet. When added to the toolbar, it will only display the script name. The full path will be shown in the tooltip to help differentiate between them.
  • Alternate rows color will now be shown in the Quick Look previews and HTML (Dynamic).
  • Quick Look previews now have buttons for expand and collapse all that will appear if you mouse over the bottom center of the window.

  • The "Word (HTML)" exporter will now correctly format level 8 and 9 rows using the level styles.

  • Japanese localization has been updated.

Backups will no longer be saved inside the document file wrapper. For new never manually saved documents, the backup will be saved to "~/Library/Autosave Information". • This update required increasing the operating system requirement to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later for OmniOutliner 3.9 beta 1 and all future OmniOutliner versions. Mac OS X 10.3.9 is only supported in OmniOutliner 3.8 or earlier.
  • Added a two-week fully-functional trial period for unlicensed users. Trial licenses will no longer be used. After the trial period has ended, you will only be able to view files and export, editing will no longer be possible.
  • Stability:
  • Hopefully fixed a crash most often encountered while closing the application.

New in OmniOutliner 3.8 (Feb 25, 2009)

  • New Features:

  • Stability:
  • Fixed an error caused by pasting a large amount of text into the batch find field.
  • HTML/DHTML Exporters:

New in OmniOutliner 3.7.1 (Nov 6, 2008)

  • General:
  • Fixed a regression that caused multiple OmniFocus links to be pasted into a single link.
  • Dynamic HTML Exporter & QuickLook Preview:
  • A considerable number of changes have been made to the HTML/DHTML exporter. Most are listed below:
  • Color transparency now supported through the rgba CSS attribute. *Note: This is not supported by existing versions of Internet Explorer and the color will simply be ignored. For OmniOutliner Professional users, you can download a version of the DHTML exporter that doesn't use transparency for better browser compatibility. You can find it in the "OmniOutliner Exports Plugin" pack on the OmniOutliner's Extras page-
  • Background colors should be rendering correctly with the exception of certain color formats. This includes things like the note background color and gutter color.
  • Non-italic characters in a row that has italics set on it will now be non-italic.
  • Grid lines and notes should no longer cause columns to be misaligned.
  • Row indentation will now be correctly preserved when using row labels.
  • Column background color will no longer override the background color of a row level.
  • Strikethrough is now supported using (text-decoration: line-through). It can not be turned off for individual characters in a row if the whole row was set to strikethrough.
  • Column title style should be correctly used.
  • Handle visibility should now be always correctly set.
  • Superscript/subscript is now supported through (vertical-align:sub/super).
  • All bold values in OmniOutliner greater than "Bold" will now appear as bold instead of regular weight.
  • Gutter color is now supported.
  • When using horizontal and vertical grid lines, there will now be a grid line placed at the top and far right.
  • Row labeling should now use the row's style instead of just the whole document style.
  • Removed cell spacing in most places to remove gaps in background colors previously seen. Now using padding or margins when needed.
  • Centered text in the topic column should now be centered. *Note: text alignment that is applied at the text insertion level will not work
  • Styles that inherit named styles should now correctly inherit the attributes of the named styles.
  • Column title should now show on a single column document. If you want to hide the title, turn it off in OmniOutliner before exporting (View -> Show Column Titles -> Never).
  • Space characters were previously ignored if they were contained in their own run in the XML. Space characters should now always be retained. *Note: Due to the design of HTML and web browsers, multiple space characters in a row will render as a single space. This fix does not address such situations
  • Adjusted width and spacing in numerous places to better match what you see in OmniOutliner.
  • When checkboxes or handles are completely turned off, there will no longer be placeholder space for it.
  • Added a little padding to the left side of the note cells.
  • 10.5 Specific QuickLook Support:
  • Long and short date formats should now be correctly interpreted by the QuickLook previews.
  • CMYK colors will now be approximated with an rgb value.
  • System colors are recognized but not translated to an rgb value with the exception of gridColor which is the default color for the grid lines. For QuickLook previews, all system colors except gridColor will be ignored. This is not an issue when exporting with dynamic HTML because OmniOutliner stores the color value in memory as a useable value.
  • Fixed an issue with empty number cells being handled incorrectly.
  • Standard HTML Exporter:
  • All applicable changes to the dynamic HTML exporter have been applied to the simple HTML exporter (the only one available in OmniOutliner standard). Color transparency is not supported however to provide the most browser compatibility.
  • Grid lines should now display around the note fields.
  • Stability:
  • Fixed a hanger triggered by mouse events.

New in OmniOutliner 3.7 Beta 1 (Jul 29, 2008)

  • 10.5: QuickLook support! QuickLook previews are dynamically generated with XSLT on the source code using the same transform as the dynamic HTML export. This means you can interact with your outline in the same way with collapsing and expanding sections. There are still some bugs with the dynamic HTML export so if you see any that render the preview less than useful, please let us know using the Help -> Send Feedback option.
  • 10.5: Added high-res versions of the app, document, and OPML icons.
  • Added support for the OmniFocus protocol so links can be manually typed or scripted.
  • Changed how backups are saved to remove the 16MB file limit imposed by saving to the resource fork that would cause backups to fail silently. The backup is now written out to .OOBK inside the document's file wrapper. *Note: If you modified your file to be flat, the backup will still be saved to the resource fork with the 16MB limit.*

  • Fixed an issue with not correctly updating the display of the outline title when the title is set to 'Always'.
  • Fixed a regression with the Text Border color not properly being set on first activation.
  • Fixed a regression that was causing OmniOutliner to become the active app when the clipping service was used.
  • Added a workaround that allows custom key bindings for the 'New From Template' options again without causing the slow down previously experienced.

  • 10.5: It is possible to access documents by their name without the file extension again through AppleScript.
  • 10.5: Fixed an issue with EPS generated PDFs being low resolution.
  • Added two new defaults to support the keyboard changes already made in OmniFocus, OOShouldEditNotesOnEnterKey and OOShouldToggleEditingWithEscapeKey.
  • The default values of these are set so there is no changed in enter and escape key behavior over previous OO3 versions. To match OmniFocus's enter key behavior, enter the following without the quotes into Terminal.app while OmniOutliner is closed: "defaults write com.omnigroup.OmniFocus.Release OOShouldEditNotesOnEnterKey -bool false"
  • OmniOutliner is now code signed.
  • Updated the about info with the new Omni building address
