  • NeoOffice has VoiceOver support again.

New in NeoOffice 2022.5 (Nov 7, 2022)

  • This version fixes the following bugs:
  • VoiceOver support has been removed as several completely new crashing bugs were reported soon after we released 2022.4. While our fixes in 2022.4 do detect C++ pointers that LibreOffice has already deleted, our fixes only delayed crashing long enough that NeoOffice would eventually crash in a new set of code locations.

New in NeoOffice 2022.4 (Nov 7, 2022)

  • This version fixes the following bugs:
  • NeoOffice would crash in several different code locations due to a failure of our new VoiceOver code to detect C++ pointers that LibreOffice has already deleted.
  • NeoOffice Professional Edition would not load the latest version Oracle's JDK 17.

New in NeoOffice 2022.3 (Oct 10, 2022)

  • This version of NeoOffice fixes the following bug:
  • Command-clicking on a hyperlink in a document would display a "fatal error" dialog and then crash if the hyperlink does not point to a local file. This bug was caused by our fix for LibreOffice bug 150873 that was added in the previous release to resolve any macOS aliases in a file path.

New in NeoOffice 2022.2 (Oct 6, 2022)

  • This version adds the following new features:
  • VoiceOver support: We have finally succeeded in making the LibreOffice accessibility code work within NeoOffice's multithreaded architecture. With this change, NeoOffice now has support for VoiceOver and possibly other macOS accessibility features. Also, we have upgraded the LibreOffice accessibility code to use Apple's newer, more efficient NSAccessibilityElement class to significantly reduce memory usage.
  • Native popup menus: NeoOffice's underlying LibreOffice code does not support accessibility in its non-native popup menus so we have replaced most non-native popup menus with native menus.
  • Also, this version fixes the following bugs:
  • Fixed LibreOffice bug 145563 by adding separate fonts for each font's localized and unlocalized family and font names. This increases the likelihood of matching the family name in documents saved by OpenOffice and LibreOffice to an actual font.
  • Fixed LibreOffice bug 150873 by adding code that resolves any macOS aliases in a file path before a file path is opened by NeoOffice's underlying LibreOffice code.
  • Fixed a crash when quitting while NeoOffice is reloading a document by delaying document reloading when NeoOffice's quit handler code is running.

New in NeoOffice 2022.1 (Jun 27, 2022)

  • This version of NeoOffice fixes the following bugs:

  • When pasting HTML into a Writer document, NeoOffice would sometimes crash
  • When undoing text that has been changed using the Chinese conversion dialog, LibreOffice bug #91995 would occur in NeoOffice
  • When dragging images from the Finder, dropping the image into NeoOffice would fail (Issue #6)
  • SSL support was missing from Python libraries bundled with NeoOffice Professional Edition (Issue #9)

New in NeoOffice 2022 (May 13, 2022)

  • This is the first version of NeoOffice that includes a universal installer and that runs natively on both Silicon and Intel Macs running on the following versions of macOS.
  • NeoOffice 2022 is still based on LibreOffice 4.4 so it should have the same features and behaviors as NeoOffice 2017.
  • Also, this version fixes the following bugs:
  • NeoOffice would hang when changing the font or text size while there is uncommitted text in a Writer comment (Issue #2)
  • When running in Dark Mode, changing any cells within the data range of a Calc chart would cause the chart's text color to invert when saving (Issue #3)

New in NeoOffice 2015 Classic Edition (Sep 17, 2015)

  • NeoOffice 2015 Classic Edition has all of the same features as NeoOffice 3.4.1. Specifically, this version of NeoOffice contains all of the features that are in NeoOffice 3.4.1 plus the following new features:
  • NeoOffice is now a 64 bit application instead of a 32 bit application so it does not have any of issues that we found when running NeoOffice 3.4.1 on OS X El Capitan Beta
  • NeoOffice now uses Oracle's Java SE Development Kit (JDK) so Base users can view and edit NeoOffice, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice database files without having to install Apple's obsolete version of Java
  • In addition to these new features, this version of NeoOffice fixes the following bugs:
  • After starting a slide show from a presentation document that is in full screen mode, exiting the slide show would disable the OS X menubar until the presentation document was closed
  • When opening a document while in full screen mode that contains linked but not embedded images or OLE objects, NeoOffice would shrink the newly opened full screen mode window

  • El Capitan Public Beta users: this version also fixes the following bugs:
  • Opening a new window while in full screen mode no longer causes NeoOffice to hang
  • Typing text in a full screen mode window no longer fails

New in NeoOffice 2014.12 (Jul 1, 2015)

  • Includes significantly faster handling of lengthy, 100+ page documents with tables.
  • Previous versions of NeoOffice could temporarily hang when opening, editing, saving, printing, exporting to PDF, or previewing lengthy documents with tables. This hanging was due to NeoOffice recalculating the document's page breaks and table cell sizes. To avoid such hanging, the NeoOffice engineers have made the following changes:
  • When opening, editing, or saving Writer documents, NeoOffice now recalculates page breaks and table cell sizes in the background in small chunks over the course of a few minutes. By deferring the recalculation, you no longer need to wait for the recalculation to finish before you can continue editing your document.
  • When printing, exporting to PDF, or previewing Writer documents, NeoOffice now displays a dialog if recalculating page breaks and table cell sizes takes more than 30 seconds. This dialog gives you the option to cancel the recalculation. If you cancel the recalculation, NeoOffice uses rough guesses to set page breaks and table cells and immediately proceeds to printing, exporting to PDF, or previewing your document.

New in NeoOffice 2014.11 (May 22, 2015)

  • NeoOffice no longer pauses after several swipes. NeoOffice's swipe event handling code would sometimes pause for a moment if the user swiped several times in a row.
  • Swiping or moving the scroll wheel very slowly will now move only a single line or row at a time. Before, NeoOffice would randomly jump 2 or 3 lines when swiping or moving the scroll wheel very slowly.
  • When swiping or moving the scroll wheel rapidly, the page or row number tooltip no longer flickers rapidly. The flickering tooltip was caused by NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice code closing and reopening the tooltip after each swipe or scrolling event.

  • This version also fixes the following bug: if a user had any documents opened for more than a day, OS X would sometimes delete NeoOffice's temporary files. This, in turn, would cause saving any open documents to fail until NeoOffice was relaunched.

New in NeoOffice 2014.7 (Jan 31, 2015)

  • Includes fixes for the following bugs:
  • When opening a new document while in full screen mode, the new document window would be displayed as a normal window instead of a full screen window
  • After closing a full screen document window, in certain cases all windows would not be visible and only the active document's menubar would be visible
  • When in a Calc document, merged cells could not be selected using the Shift and arrow keys

  • This version of NeoOffice adds automatic grammar checking. When you spellcheck a document in Writer, NeoOffice now automatically does grammar checking using the OS X grammar checker.
  • NeoOffice is now a 64-bit application. Most NeoOffice 2013.x users should not notice any changes in this version. However, the small number of users that use third-party ODBC drivers and native extensions will need to obtain 64 bit versions of their third-party ODBC drivers and native extensions. Go to http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/Configuring_MySQL_using_ODBC_and_NeoOffice_Secure_Edition to see steps for configuring MySQL's ODBC driver to work with NeoOffice 2014.1.

New in NeoOffice 3.3 Patch 9 (Aug 6, 2013)

  • Soon after we released NeoOffice 3.3 Patch 8, we found that some of the special code that NeoOffice uses when running on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was inadvertently disabled.
  • Although this bug does not affect users running Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and higher, for users running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard this bug would cause such things as native scrollbar arrows to not work and content to be drawn behind the native window growbox.
  • Since a significant number of our users are running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and this bug can be very annoying for those users, we have fixed this bug and included the fix in NeoOffice 3.3 Patch 9.
  • If you have already downloaded NeoOffice 3.3 Patch 8 and you are running Mac OS X 10.7 or higher, you will not see any changes and there is no harm if you do not install this patch. Users running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, however, are encouraged to install this patch.

New in NeoOffice 3.3 (Aug 23, 2012)

  • Compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and Gatekeeper
  • High resolution text drawing on Retina displays
  • New Cocoa code replaces Java, which is no longer required for core functionality
  • Improved startup and printing speed
  • English, French, German, and Italian language packs included in the default install

New in NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2 (Jul 24, 2012)

  • Compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and Gatekeeper:
  • Apple's Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion contains many changes. To ensure that NeoOffice will run smoothly on this new version of Mac OS X, the NeoOffice engineers have dedicated a significant amount of time testing NeoOffice on all "developer preview" versions of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion to find and fix any changes that affect NeoOffice before Apple's official release of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
  • Also in Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, Apple has added a new feature called Gatekeeper that is designed to help prevent Mac users from installing malicious software on their machine. To ensure that NeoOffice will install and run on machines using Gatekeeper's default settings, the NeoOffice engineers have digitally signed all NeoOffice installers and binary files so that Gatekeeper can verify that the NeoOffice engineers are registered Apple software developers. The NeoOffice engineers digitally sign NeoOffice using our legal corporate name - Planamesa Inc. - so only NeoOffice installers signed by Planamesa Inc. should be trusted.
  • New Cocoa code replaces Java:
  • NeoOffice now uses Apple's Cocoa framework to display windows, manage menus, and print. This new Cocoa code replaces the Java code that performed these functions in previous versions of NeoOffice. The new Cocoa code improves NeoOffice's startup and printing speed. It also removes the need for Java - a technology that Apple has begun been phasing out of Mac OS X - for most NeoOffice users. Java is now only used to open Base database files and to run a small number of NeoOffice's many wizards.
  • Automatic installation of French, German, and Italian language packs:
  • French, German, and Italian users no longer need to install a language pack. In previous versions of NeoOffice, users who wanted to see NeoOffice's menus, buttons, and help text in French, German, or Italian needed to install a language pack. While most users download NeoOffice from an English speaking country, a large number of our users download from French, German, and Italian speaking countries. By adding these three languages to the main installer, we estimate that 95% of NeoOffice users will not need to install a language pack.

  • Inserting characters using the Mac OS X Character Viewer window fails
  • Menus are not displayed in the menubar when an embedded object in a document is in edit mode and focus is received from a different application
  • The Format :: Character menu is disabled when an embedded Calc object in a document is in edit mode

New in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 5 (Apr 27, 2012)

  • Fixed an OpenOffice.org bug where editing certain spreadsheets that use the RATE function and are embedded within an .odt file will cause NeoOffice to crash.
  • NeoOffice now exports high resolution bitmap images for EPS graphics when saving an .odt file to a .doc or .docx file in order to work around an OpenOffice.org bug that caused EPS graphics to be lost when saving to those file formats.

New in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 4 (Feb 22, 2012)

  • Opening certain .docx files causes comments to be merged and repeated
  • Dragging table column name from data source fails
  • A failed login shows a blank page in the NeoOffice Mobile window
  • Pressing the window zoom button causes incorrect resizing in NeoOffice Mobile login screen
  • Also, in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 4 we simplified the process for downloading and installing future patches and new versions of NeoOffice. Starting with NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 4, NeoOffice will download the update from within NeoOffice.
  • If downloading of the update fails or gets interrupted, NeoOffice will automatically try to resume the download from where the download failed.
  • After the download completes, NeoOffice will automatically open the downloaded file and ask the user if they want to install the update now or install it later. If the user chooses to install the update now, NeoOffice will quit normally and launch the installer in the downloaded file. If the user chooses to install the update later, the user will be asked if they want to install the update when they quit NeoOffice.

New in NeoOffice 3.2.1 (Aug 31, 2011)

  • Versions:
  • In Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple has added a new feature called Versions that allows applications to save and restore previous versions of your document. Using this new feature, saving a document causes Mac OS X to keep a copy of your document before any changes are saved so that you can restore any of the previous versions of your document.
  • The NeoOffice engineers have implemented this new Mac OS X feature and saving a file will automatically keep a copy of your document before any changes are saved. Also, by selecting NeoOffice's new Browse All Versions menu, you will be able to restore any of the previous versions of your document in Apple's document version browser.
  • Full-Screen mode:
  • In Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple has added a new feature called Full-Screen mode that allows users to expand a window to fill the entire screen by clicking a new button in the window title bar.
The NeoOffice engineers have implemented this new Mac OS X feature and pressing the new button or selecting NeoOffice's existing View :: Full Screen menu will cause a document to enter Full-Screen mode.
  • Resume:
In Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple has added a new feature called Resume that allows applications to automatically reopen the documents that were open the last time that the application quit. This new feature helps Mac OS X users avoid the tedious process of reopening their documents after launching an application.
  • The NeoOffice engineers have implemented this new Mac OS X feature and NeoOffice will automatically reopen any documents that you had open the last time that NeoOffice quit immediately after NeoOffice has been launched. Also, NeoOffice users who do not like this new Mac OS X feature, will be able to disable this feature by selecting NeoOffice's new NeoOffice :: Mac OS X Options :: Disable Mac OS X Resume menu.
  • Below is a list of some of the Mac OS X features requested by our users that are in NeoOffice 3.2.1 but are not in OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice:
  • Native Mac OS X text highlighting:
NeoOffice draws highlighted text the same as Apple's Safari and TextEdit applications. Recent versions of OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice attempt to emulate native Mac OS X text highlighting by drawing a very light shade of the system highlight color on top of the highlighted text. However, many of our users have requested that we support full native Mac OS X text highlighting behavior in NeoOffice so we have rewritten the text highlighting code in NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code to draw highlighted text the same as Apple's various Mac OS X applications. The following screen snapshots show how NeoOffice's text highlighting behavior compares to OpenOffice.org's and LibreOffice's behavior:
  • Text highlighting in NeoOffice
  • Text highlighting in OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice
  • Open Calc or Impress instead of Writer at launch:

  • The NeoOffice :: Open at Launch menu allows you to choose which type of document to open when NeoOffice is launched. By default, NeoOffice opens a Writer document when launched. However, many of our users have requested that we provide an easy way to make a different document type such as Calc or Impress open when NeoOffice is launched so we have added the NeoOffice :: Open at Launch menu.
When a user selects one of the document types listed in this menu, NeoOffice will open the selected document type the next time that you launch it. Also, users can select the "- None -" menu item to only show the Mac OS X menubar when NeoOffice is launched. The screen snapshot to the right shows the NeoOffice :: Open at Launch menu with Calc set as the document type to open at launch.

New in NeoOffice 3.2 Beta Patch 2 (Mar 30, 2011)

  • Lion allows resizing windows by dragging on any part of the window's edge and dragging the left edge would sometimes cause the window shape to "snap back" after dragging. Both of these patches eliminate this snapping back behavior.
  • On Lion, most windows with titlebars now have a rounded bottom corners but NeoOffice would display such windows with squared corners. NeoOffice 3.2 Beta Patch 2 fixes this by displaying all non-floating windows with titlebars with rounded bottom corners when running NeoOffice on Lion.

New in NeoOffice 3.1.2 Patch 7 (Mar 30, 2011)

New in NeoOffice 3.2 Beta Patch 1 (Mar 22, 2011)

  • When NeoOffice is first run on a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion machine that does not have Java installed, the dialog that appears now reads "To open NeoOffice..." instead of "To open java...". Also, after installing the Java system update from this dialog, NeoOffice will automatically relaunch.
  • On Mac OS X 10.6 and higher, Apple's Image Capture dialog would cause NeoOffice to hang if that dialog's red close button was pressed. We found a way to disabled the red close button in that dialog to prevent this hanging bug from occurring.
  • Dragging the icon in a NeoOffice document's titlebar into the same or another NeoOffice document would cause NeoOffice to hang. This hanging bug has been fixed.

New in NeoOffice 3.2 Beta (Mar 18, 2011)

  • New Mac OS X 10.7 Lion compatible code:
  • Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.7 Lion release is expected to have many significant changes so the NeoOffice engineers have completely reimplemented the following NeoOffice features to ensure that these features will be fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion:
  • Text layout and rendering
  • Copy and paste
  • Drag and drop
  • Expanded font support:
  • NeoOffice now uses Apple's "CoreText" text layout and rendering fuctions. In contrast, OpenOffice.org and previous versions of NeoOffice use Apple's older "ATSUI" functions. While users that only use the fonts that Apple bundles with Mac OS X, Apple's "CoreText" functions provides improved text layout and rendering for many Windows OpenType fonts.
  • Significant reduction in size of PDF files:
  • PDF files exported from NeoOffice that contain mostly text are now 50% to 75% smaller than the same files exported from previous versions of NeoOffice. The NeoOffice engineers implemented this significant reduction in PDF file size by using a more compact method of specifying the position of font glyphs within PDF files.

New in NeoOffice 3.1.2 (Sep 8, 2010)

  • Temporary files are encrypted when FileVault is enabled:
  • By default, NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code creates temporary files in your machine's /tmp folder. While this may not be a problem for most users, for users who have enabled FileVault /tmp is an insecure, unencrypted folder. Since NeoOffice's temporary files may contain data from a user's documents, NeoOffice now creates temporary files in a folder within the user's Home folder so that such files are automatically encrypted when FileVault is enabled.
  • [edit] Fix for bugs that cause embedded images to be lost after saving Writer or Impress documents:
  • In the last few months, we have seen several reports that in some cases embedded images are lost after saving and reopening Writer or Impress documents. This problem has been reported in NeoOffice as well as in the two products that NeoOffice is based on: Oracle's OpenOffice.org and Novell's Go-oo.
  • Although this problem is very difficult to reproduce, we found and fixed the following two bugs that can cause images to be lost after saving Writer and Impress documents:
  • Saving Writer documents - Images are lost in some cases where autorecovery is turned on, an autorecovery save occurs, and then the document is manually saved after the autorecovery save has finished.
  • Saving Impress documents - Images are lost in some cases when Mac OS X deletes files in the system temporary folder. Mac OS X periodically deletes files in certain folders if they are more than a couple days old and if an Impress document is open for a couple of days, this periodic Mac OS X process will delete the temporary image files that NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org use to store embedded images in open Impress documents and once these temporary files are deleted, the embedded images in an open Impress document are lost.
