  • Optimized for Big Sur.
  • New 1-Minute Intervals Transcripts option under the Edit menu. Displays all
  • captions for each minute of video instead of timecode for each caption. It is also an
  • available option under the Multi-File Export option.
  • Restored the left/right arrows for the buttons that maximize or minimize the
  • share of the screen either for transcribing or editing (the 2 buttons next to the
  • Duration timecode display above the movie). With Catalina and Big Sur, these arrows
  • were missing.
  • Fixed a bug where the Caption Row is sometimes unpopulated, preventing captions
  • from displaying in Preview mode.
  • Fixed a bug where the last transcribed caption was not being displayed if all
  • captions were not yet transcribed.
  • Timecode will now continue to run in Preview mode even past the last caption.
  • Removed a stray alert in the Split Caption button that was for development
  • purposes only.

New in MovieCaptioner 4.7 (Sep 20, 2012)

  • Integrated QT player window no longer needs to launch QuickTime to preview movie captions and no longer requires QuickTime Pro to save embedded QuickTime captioned movies. QuickTime Pro is still required for embedding SCC captions, however.
  • New spell check feature will highlight misspelled words as they are typed. There is also a global spell check (under the Spelling menu). Words may be added to the user’s dictionary by clicking the + button on the global spell check window.
  • The Overlap button has been removed. MovieCaptioner now automatically overlaps each loop of the movie by a half second or so.
  • Can now export as WebVTT captions.
  • MovieCaptioner no longer uses QT text files for embedding captions. XML is used instead to better work with Apple’s retina displays and for its support of special characters which QT text files lack.
  • After deleting a caption, caption list no longer highlights the last caption in the list.

New in MovieCaptioner 4.2 (Jan 20, 2011)

  • Added a Symbols menu to quickly add hard-to-type symbols to your project. Note that these symbols may not all be supported by QuickTime Player, but should work if using SCC or embedded QT Unicode export formats.
  • Can now change the background size by typing in any number. Previously there was only a pulldown menu with a few choices.
  • Fixed a bug in Embedded QuickTime (Unicode) export where captions were not being displayed correctly.
  • Help tags (on mouseover) now display keyboard equivalents for many of the buttons.

New in MovieCaptioner 4.1 (Jan 4, 2011)

  • Added a visual guide (red line) that will assist in setting line breaks
  • Text size for captions in the list can now be increased or decreased by clicking the up/down arrows in the upper left of the caption list.
  • Shift Start Times can now shift times for either all captions or just selected captions.
  • Name change from MovCaptioner to MovieCaptioner to reflect the fact that it can use other movie formats such as mp4, FLV, and Windows Media.

New in MovieCaptioner 4.0 (Dec 6, 2010)

  • Support for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese text in Preview mode as well as Embedded QuickTime and other exports
  • Can now import Adobe Encore caption files.
  • All non-embedded exports are enabled without movie being loaded. This will be helpful for importing one format and exporting as another if the movie is not available.
  • Checks to make sure MovCaptioner is installed properly in the Applications folder
  • Fixed a few codes in SCC import that were not being converted properly.
  • Fixed a bug where caption background was not being presented below the movie.

  • Can now export SRT, SUB, STL, Adobe Encore, and both text and HTML transcripts with UTF-16 text encoding to support more special accented characters.

  • MovCaptioner now supports number separators that use a comma instead of a decimal point.
  • Fixed an bug with SRT, SUB, and STL imports that caused the font color attribute to be written incorrectly, which could prevent the Preview from working.

New in MovieCaptioner 3.6 (Jan 14, 2010)

  • SCC export will now automatically calculate the buffer offset needed and adjust timecode accordingly. May eliminate the need to manually adjust timecode using “Shift All Timecodes” and should result in a much closer synchronization between the video and captions.
  • SCC import will also calculate and automatically adjust for timecode buffer, eliminating the need to shift timecodes in many cases.
  • SCC export will also try to adjust timecode if it sees an overlap occurring between the required buffer time for one caption and the start time for the next caption. To avoid this, it is best to keep at least a couple of seconds between captions.
  • Fixed a bug where if a caption ended with a colon, the colon would move to the next line when the project is opened again.
  • Fixed a bug where movies would fail to load from external drives when dragged to the movie window.
  • Fixed a bug where the Split Caption button would be disabled after importing text.
  • Fixed a bug in Import Text In Line Form where it was not importing as the selected
  • encoding preference in the MovCaptioner Preferences window. This could result in garbled characters for apostrophes, quotes, ellipses, and emdashes, for example.
  • Fixed a bug where if caption text was selected, Merge Captions button would not copy text from second caption to the first.
  • Fixed a bug where a random timecode was inserted into the new caption when the Split Caption button was used. It now splits the difference between the caption that comes before it and the one after it. If there is no timecode, 00:00:00.00 is inserted.

New in MovieCaptioner 3.5 (Dec 17, 2009)

  • Now much quicker to select and edit captions in the caption list.
  • Will now work properly with mounted volumes and external hard drives (no longer need to move files to your main hard drive to work on them).
  • Attempting to edit a blank timecode after importing text no longer causes a crash, but gives a default value of 00:00:00.00 to help format new timecode properly.
  • Fixed bug with STL files that created 3 digit frames in some situations.
  • Fixed bug with STL that corrects timecode when 01 HR start time is used.
  • Fixed bug with Find Next that could cause a crash if nothing was found prior to using it.

  • Fixed a bug that caused MovCaptioner to crash if it was not installed properly. It will now
  • create a Temp folder (for Undo/Redo/Revert) in whichever folder the application is
  • installed. It is still highly recommended that it be installed in its own folder in the
  • Applications folder, however.
  • You can now select which row you want SCC captions to start on. Default is row 15. A
  • pulldown menu in the Text Properties area allows you to select the row, then click the
  • Change button next to it to change the selected caption’s starting row.
  • Under the Edit menu, you can use Change All SCC Rows To Current Selection to move
  • all SCC rows at once.
  • SCC caption export will automatically find and replace characters such as smart quotes, apostrophes, ellipses, and em-dashes that can cause errors in SCC exports.
  • New option under Export menu allows you to export only the SCC file without importing it into QuickTime. It is still recommended to use the Sonic Scenarist (SCC) option to check timing and adjust with Shift All Start Times option under the Edit menu.
  • Split Caption button now recognizes when timecode has changed to 1 HR start time.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 will now import SCC files created by MovCaptoiner which can be printed directly to tape for Line 21 captions. (See Help link).
