Lightwright Changelog

What's new in Lightwright 6.0.40

Jan 5, 2021
  • NEW FEATURES IN THIS VERSION:
  • Support for Lightwright LLC’s new web server, including version checking, automatic bug reporting, and license quantities greater than 6.
  • CHANGES IN THIS VERSION:
  • Lightwright requires access to the internet at least once a month, to check for updates and confirm license validity. Lightwright now sends our server either “macOS” or “Windows” and the software build number to let us know how many users are on which platform and what the adoption rate is.
  • Multiple-cell worksheet edits are 7-10 times faster, though you probably won’t notice it unless your show has thousands of worksheet rows.
  • Training (.lwtrn) files must be dropped on the worksheet window to activate the training license. The user’s documents folder and the desktop are no longer scanned for these files.
  • John McKernon Software branding has been replaced by Lightwright LLC. Updated Lightwright icons.
  • BUGS FIXED:
  • Windows on external monitors that were subsequently disconnected didn’t move to an available monitor the next time Lightwright was launched.
  • The severe window flickering issues on Windows are fixed.
  • The fixture database was missing lights from Chroma-Q.
  • If you opened a .lw5 file or older, Lightwright could LOSE ALL OF THE FOCUS CHART PICTURES.
  • Lightwright didn’t keep track of which registration was set as the Active one.
  • The Marks list could have too many possible characters in it (ALUMS, WEDGE)
  • When Lightwright adjusted universe boundaries (for Vectorworks compatibility), the universe# and DMX# on lights could be changed to incorrect values. PULED
  • A problem happened when choosing Setup/Marks. LEAPS
  • If the maintenance window was open and you clicked back on Lightwright from Vectorworks, multiple “busy” windows appeared in Lightwright and wouldn’t go away. JAXIE
  • A window could be moved so far up or down the screen that it was unreachable.
  • Many Vectorworks data fields were cleared when data was going from Lightwright into Vectorworks.
  • Using the Groups window’s “Show on Worksheet” command failed if the group contained channels our of numerical order.
  • [Maybe fixed:] When launching Lightwright on Windows, there could be an initialization error. AIRED
  • When working in the Cable or Breakouts column in Maintenance/Circuit Name, opening the Choose List for Cable or Breakouts did nothing. KLOPR
  • Rearranging the order of a maintenance list caused multiple worksheet window refreshes. KLOPR
  • Registration information could be erased if language was set to anything other than English.
  • An error when opening the Adding window. TOPOS
  • Clicking items on lists (such as Reports, Error Checks, etc.) sometimes checked the wrong line.
  • Other miscellaneous bugs: BELIE, BETES, BLACK, CACKY, CAIDS, DEAWY, DRUSE, FASTI, FRYER, GLAUM, HERBS, IMIDS, JEMMY, NINJA, OARED, OCCAM, PULAS, PULLS, SAUCY, TAUNT, TELCO, TURNS, WEANS

New in Lightwright 6.0.36 Build 362 (Aug 31, 2020)

  • BUGS FIXED (Multiple BugIDs can refer to the same bug):
  • On macOS, the Live Count window disappeared when another application got the focus.
  • Controls in the Limits and Variable Label Color windows were piled on top of each other, making them unusable. IP Addresses could be wrong after the show file was saved and reopened. SEARS

New in Lightwright 6.0.35 Build 361 (Aug 20, 2020)

  • BUGS FIXED:
  • Copying and pasting focus charts only worked if the sketch contained drawn objects.
  • When choosing the shared folder, an error occurred if the parent folder of the shared folder did not exist. PERIS

New in Lightwright 6.0.34 Build 360 (Aug 19, 2020)

  • CHANGES IN THIS VERSION:
  • Using the down arrow key to scroll through the worksheet is now faster.
  • BUGS FIXED (Multiple BugIDs can refer to the same bug):
  • Lightwright files could sometimes not be opened on Windows.
  • Deleting any part of a label failed to mark the label as needing to be saved.

New in Lightwright 6.0.33 Build 359 (Jul 19, 2020)

  • CHANGES IN THIS VERSION:
  • Training files (suffix .LWtrn) are no longer dragged & dropped to activate them. Instead, new “Choose a Training License File...” buttons have been added to the Preferences/Registration window and the Demo Mode window. The training file is now remembered until it expires.
  • The red text color used on the worksheet to indicate changes made by others is now a darker shade of red.
  • BUGS FIXED (Multiple BugIDs can refer to the same bug):
  • Saving a show file failed (usually with a lockup freeze) when there was a layout contained in the show file. REAVE, BWAZI File/Save a Backup acted like Save As, it did not add the date and turn off Data Exchange. BEVOR
  • Opening a layout with a show graphic in it could cause an error message. KB
  • Paperwork for user columns defined as Integer only printed lights “without”. BWAZI

New in Lightwright 6.0.32 Build 356 (Jun 29, 2020)

  • NEW FEATURES IN THIS VERSION:
  • A Font & Size menu item has been added to the Worksheet menu. It sets the font and text size for the worksheet. You can still use the worksheet’s contextual menu to set the font and size. BEGAR
  • Reports remember the last-used destination (Window, printer, etc.) and the printer page orientation. They revert to the default (Report Window) each time Lightwright starts. TRYER
  • A Revert to Default Settings button in Lightwright Preferences. It restores all preferences and other settings to their default values (before you have customized anything). This is helpful if prefs files were corrupted for any reason.
  • An option has been added to the worksheet’s Shortcut Buttons (across the left top of the window). The new option lets you restore the default settings for these buttons. To access it, control+click or right+click anywhere on any shortcut button.
  • Text on labels can now be up to 720 points (10 inches) tall.
  • In-cell worksheet editing is now available when running on Windows.
  • A new window describing how to set up Lightwright to work with Gmail has been added to the Email Setup window.
  • When merging two show files, these categories are now available: Focus Beam, Focus Axis, Footnotes, Show Title & Headers, and Vocabulary.
  • CHANGES IN THIS VERSION:
  • The operating system’s Color Picker has been replaced with a custom one with many more colors available.
  • The default location for the Shared folder (containing files accessible by all users on the computer) is now the Shared Documents folder. On Windows, that is User PublicDocument. On macOS, it is /Users/Shared. If this folder is not available, Lightwright will use the user’s Documents folder. The Shared folder is always named “Lightwright 6”.
  • Lightwright never shares any universe setup information with Vectorworks. Lightwright does look at Vectorworks universe labels when you do a “complete export” from Vectorworks, and will alert you if they do not match the ones in Lightwright. You will have to manually make sure that Lightwright and Vectorworks use the same universe setup information.
  • Entering anything into a Work Note’s Cue# column no longer clears info in any other work note columns. If the work note is about a cue and not the lights being used in the cue, then enter the cue# in the Cue# column and then clear the info from the
  • Channel or other “search” cells to clear the content from the derived-data cells. SICKO
  • Custom Focus Charts now bold selected Axis indicators instead of drawing circles around them.
  • LW6Admin.exe (for Windows only) has no interface and cannot be launched on its own anymore. It is now a “helper” app that Lightwright launches automatically when needed. When you click Save in Preferences/Registration, LW6Admin will launch, do its work, then quit. During this time, Windows may ask you if it’s OK for Lightwright to modify your computer settings. If you answer “No”, then registration info will not be saved.
  • Lightwright now notifies you if there are updates available, but it does not download and install them for you. Go to the Downloads area at www.mckernon.com to get the update.
  • In the File/Print Paperwork and Counting windows, the OK button is disabled until something is selected for printing or counting.
  • Training License Files (their file extension is .LWtrn) are no longer detected automatically. To use one, launch Lightwright and then drag and drop the license file onto the worksheet. You will have to do this each time you launch Lightwright
  • File/Print Setup had gone missing and is back. Also, Lightwright will now ask you to use File/Print Setup to choose the correct page size if the printer’s current page size is different than the one specified by a sheet of labels.
  • Saving .lw6 files is now threaded, meaning it should keep the operating system from saying Lightwright isn’t responding while saving.
  • Web sites are now always accessed using https: instead of http:.
  • Vectorworks 2020 SP2 fixes bugs that prevented Data Exchange from working correctly with the Address, Universe, and DMX# cells in Lightwright. There are more fixes in SP3 of VW 2020, so Data Exchange is usable, as long as you follow the instructions in the “Lightwright 6 and Vectorworks 2020 Data Exchange” document in Lightwright’s Help menu.
  • The Data Exchange link window in Lightwright now offers different options depending on which version of Vectorworks you are using.
  • You can now choose the folder you want Lightwright updates downloaded into (when you have Lightwright download them instead of getting them via links at www.mckernon.com). Beginning with 6.0.30, this option is disabled because it does not download updates.
  • The Spare Address report lists universes with nothing assigned to them as spares.
  • The default format for the Address column is now Universe (#/###), not Absolute.
  • The “Missing Universe” and “Missing DMX#” error checks have been removed, they were the same as the “Missing Address” check.
  • Maintenance List Editing: When editing the “long” name on a maintenance list, the “short” name will not be changed unless it is empty. Holding down the Cmd key (Ctrl key on Windows) while pressing Return after typing the long name tells Lightwright to change both the long and short name entries. In neither case will Lightwright ask if you want the short name changed.
  • When printing paperwork, Lightwright uses the Short button setting of the active worksheet tab.
  • Lightwright always uses secure connection mode when sending email. As a result, the “Server requires authentication” option has been removed and the available SSL connection modes have changed.
  • Preferences settings are stored in a different format than they were in previous versions, so you will need to re-set all of your settings when you first launch Lightwright 6.0.30.
  • The Preference option to set the row shading color has been removed. Lightwright now uses the system color on macOS and a fixed color on Windows.
  • Lightwright now uses the operating system’s highlight color instead of yellow.
  • The appearance of some controls has changed because the underlying control was changed for 64-bit.
  • The default number of universes has been raised to 50. This only applies to new shows, not existing ones.
  • Lightwright now checks for internet access by trying to contact www.apple.com, instead of pinging Google. Lightwright requires port 80 to be open for internet access (including license verification and software update notifications). The status of internet availability is shown on the About Lightwright window.
  • BUGS FIXED:
  • Deleted maintenance list entries reappeared when the show file was opened, even if history was cleared.
  • The worksheet window’s title wasn’t “untitled.lw6” when you opened a new file.
  • IP address viewing, sorting, and printing didn’t work. RIVAL
  • Printing focus charts when only one light fit on a page caused a crash. ZOBOS
  • The worksheet didn’t refresh properly when using a contextual menu to set worksheet size or font.
  • Worksheet window failed to reset the scroll bar to zero when a new sort was chosen.
  • Lightwright could freeze when launching if it attempted to read a folder as a file. PICKY
  • When an .xml file from Vectorworks 2020 doesn’t include the Absolute Address field, Lightwright didn’t explain why it couldn’t process the .xml file. NAEVI
  • If Lightwright crashed while quitting, it could lose all preference settings and defaults. Now it will use “factory settings” if they are
  • lost. BLAME
  • The status of the Debug Log button in the “About Lightwright” window wasn’t saved.
  • Choosing a new background picture in the Focus Charts drawing window didn’t refresh the worksheet.
  • Lightwright looked in the wrong place for training files.
  • Lightwright 2 files could not be opened.
  • Channels or circuit numbers with a decimal number turned into numbers with a letter suffix when saved as .lw5. TURFS
  • Lightwright failed to save the “Show Rack Label” and “Show Rack Power Feed” options in label files. GRUMP
  • Other miscellaneous internal bugs were fixed: BAAED, BROGS, HORSE, HYNDE, KUSSO, REIGN, RONDE, SHTIK, URNED, WAXED, WISHT, YOURT
