  • Tabbing through the “Insert Silence” option’s field now cycles between all four sections, fixing an issue for VoiceOver users.

New in Fission 2.8.3 (Nov 30, 2022)

  • Full MacOS 13 (Ventura) Compatibility. Fission now has full compatibility with MacOS 13 (Ventura), with no known issues.
  • On MacOS 13 (Ventura) and up, Fission’s “Preferences” window is now called “Settings”, to match the new MacOS convention.
  • If the “Check for Test Releases” hidden preference is enabled, checks will now run regardless of the status of the “Software Update” preference/setting.

New in Fission 2.8.2 (Oct 14, 2022)

  • Initial MacOS 13 (Ventura) Compatibility. Fission now has initial compatibility with MacOS 13 (Ventura), with no known issues.
  • The load time of large MP3s has been improved.
  • Export handling has been improved with certain FLAC files.
  • When the full version of Fission has been unlocked, the “License” window now subtly shows the application's version number.
  • Fussy typography improvements have been made to the mailing list sign-up window shown at the fifth launch for new users, as well as the “Release Notes” window shown at the first launch of a new version, which you might be looking at right now!

  • Fission now supports WAV files up to 4 GB in size.
  • Fission now reliably saves metadata for all WAV and AIFF files.
  • A problem where the “Insert Silence” option could lead to issues with saving has been corrected.
  • A rare issue where using dithering when exporting Apple Lossless files could result in distorted audio has been corrected.

  • Full Support for MacOS 12 (Monterey). Fission now has full compatibility with the MacOS 12 (Monterey).
  • Improved Resampler. Fission's sample rate converter has been overhauled, and now provides greatly improved conversion quality.
  • Exporting to Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV now offers advanced “Dithering” settings.
  • The Composer and Grouping tags are now supported for FLAC files.
  • To prevent issues with other applications loading AIFF files, Fission no longer preserves old HFS Type/Creator codes.
  • Fission now avoids preventing the Mac from sleeping, except when it's actively playing audio.
  • Fission now correctly shows the “Compilation” tag, even if it does not conform to specs.
  • The Export window no longer incorrectly throws an exception with certain custom formats and sample rates.
  • Clicking in the Export window no longer incorrectly shifts content visually.
  • A change made in Fission 2.7.1 that worked around a performance issue with the QuickLook feature in MacOS has been reverted. Unfortunately, that change led to issues with the Music and QuickTime Player apps. At present, QuickLook does not properly preview chapterized AAC files. This will require a fix from Apple.
  • Fission now requires MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) or higher. If you're still on 10.13 (or lower), be sure to see our Legacy page.

New in Fission 2.7.1 (Sep 3, 2021)

  • Support for MacOS 12 (Monterey): Fission now has initial compatibility with the forthcoming MacOS 12 (Monterey).
  • Enhancements to Fission's Built-In Updating: Fission's updating code has been overhauled and improved. It is now based on Sparkle 1.26.0, with several customizations.
  • To avoid possible issues, Fission will no longer offer to “Install on Quit”. Automatic background updating has been removed as well, placing the user in charge of all updates.
  • The update interface has been improved, with several design and text enhancements.
  • Finally, the new “Skip for Now” button allows you to delay updating if desired.
  • As always, we strongly recommend leaving the “Automatically check for updates” option enabled.
  • Fission's manual is now provided online, rather than being built in to the application. The application's “Help” menu has also been modified and streamlined, to get you assistance as quickly as possible.
  • Fission's Start window has been made more intelligent. The Cmd-0 shortcut will now open the window if its closed, close it if it's open and in the foreground, or pull it forward if it's already open but in the background.
  • Support for some WAV codecs (pcm_s24le) has been improved.
  • Many improvements have been made to Fission's waveform display, to prevent issues where it could appear incorrectly.
  • Fission will no longer incorrectly convert PNG artwork to JPG on MacOS 11 (Big Sur).
  • Fission now works around a performance issue with the QuickLook feature in MacOS that could prevent a preview of chapterized audio files.
  • Fission now better handle disk errors, malformed recordings, and more.
  • When Fission is unlocked by entering a valid license key, in addition to displaying an animation, it will now play a brief celebratory sound for visually impaired users.
  • The Quick Tour now properly supports the new “Speak items under the pointer” setting in MacOS 11 (Big Sur).
  • Improvements have been made for the Quick Tour to present better on small resolutions, using scrollbars to make all content accessible.
  • Due to breaking changes in their API, the “Share to SoundCloud” integration has been removed from Fission.
  • It's now possible to access several relevant menu items while the initial Quick Tour is open.
  • The “Purchase” button in the License window now uses a better link to get to the Buy page.
  • The Update window's width has been tweaked, to handle longer titles.
  • Get Access to Test Builds: Fission now features a new “Check for test releases” hidden preference. When active, you may receive notice of pre-release versions of the software, ahead of its wide release. If you're interested to test updates, you can turn this option on in the Debugging window (accessible by holding option while viewing the “Help” menu, then selecting “Quit and Relaunch for Debugging”).
  • Fission Is Now Available Exclusively via RogueAmoeba.com: As of version 2.7.1, Fission is distributed exclusively via direct download and purchase from our site. It has been removed from the Mac App Store. See this page for more details.
  • Many debugging improvements have been made:
  • Available logs have been cleaned up.
  • Active logs are now listed in the logging files.
  • Machine details are no longer needlessly included in copied errors.
  • Logs are now activated with simple checkboxes.
  • When a log is activated, it will also collect recent crash logs, to better understand any issues.
  • A “Quit and Relaunch for Debugging” option has been added, accessed by pressing option in the Help menu.
  • Command-line debugging options have been added.

New in Fission 2.7.0 (Dec 8, 2020)

  • Initial Support for M Chip-Based Macs: Fission is now a Universal app, offering initial support for the new M1 chip-based Macs.
  • Fission now respects the user-specified system-wide “Accent” color on macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and up. It also supports Big Sur's new “Multicolor” option, with an appropriate, app-specific gold.
  • Fission now shows sample rates in Hz, rather than kHz, for consistency across all Rogue Amoeba apps.

New in Fission 2.6.1 (Nov 6, 2020)

  • An issue where toolbar icons would fail to appear properly on macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) has been corrected.
  • File handling and associated error messages for Flac files have been improved.

  • Support for MacOS 11 (Big Sur) - Fission now has full compatibility with the forthcoming MacOS 11 (Big Sur).
  • Opus Support - Playback of Opus audio files is now supported in Fission.
  • Compatible formats now offer up sample rates up to 384 kHz.
  • Devices with changing channel counts now appear correctly in Fission's output device selector.
  • A crash that could occur when no audio devices were present has been fixed.
  • Closing one window will no longer pause other windows.
  • AIFF files larger than specs allow will now load.
  • If the selected audio playback device disappears, Fission will pause as always. However, it will also now correctly fall back to the system's default output, without pinwheeling.

  • The keyboard shortcut for Fission's “Start” window has been updated from command-1 to command-0, for consistency with other Rogue Amoeba apps.

  • Factory resetting Fission now correctly sets the theme to “Match System”.
  • Several in-app art assets have been corrected for Retina displays.

  • Fission now has full compatibility with MacOS 10.15 (Catalina).
  • Full Dark Mode Support:
  • Fission now offers full Dark Mode support, using the Dark theme in Dark Mode, and the Light theme in Light Mode. To adjust this setting to your liking, see Fission's Preferences window.
  • Waveform Improvements:
  • Several improvements have been made to waveform drawing.
  • Restored Dark Theme Functionality:
  • Recent updates reduced the usefulness of Fission's Dark theme. The theme has now been updated and improved.

  • Bug Fix: To workaround a QuickLook and QuickTime Player bug which could prevent chapterized files from playing as expected, Fission now converts progressive JPEG images to baseline JPEG.

  • Critical Bug Fix: We've fixed a (thankfully) rare bug where ringtone saving or publishing to SoundCloud would cause data in the ~/Public folder to be incorrectly deleted.
  • Enhancement: Waveform display has been sped up, and its memory footprint has been reduced.
  • Enhancement: Fission can now handle damaged or fragmented MP4 files better than ever.
  • Enhancement: Fission's MP3 encoder (LAME) has been updated to version 3.100 and its FLAC encoder has been updated to version 1.3.2.
  • Enhancement: Myriad improvements to tags have been made. JPEGs are no longer incorrectly converted to PNG, and Fission now offers better handling Vorbis comments and QuickTime files with tags.

  • Fission now has support for 32-bit AIFF and WAV files, as well as 24-bit and 32-bit CAFF files.
  • Audio will now be heard sooner when outputting to certain problematic USB audio devices.
  • Several improvements have been made to Fission's high-efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) modes.
  • Many additional bug fixes have been made, including a fix for parsing rare AIFF files, ID3 tag reading improvements, and better handling of malformed files. Several rare crashes have also been prevented

New in Fission 2.3.1 (Oct 8, 2016)

  • Major Enhancement: Fission now fully supports tabs on MacOS 10.12 (Sierra). Previous versions could crash when attempting to make new tabs, so be sure to update!
  • Major Enhancement: We've made optimizations throughout the app to make this the snappiest Fission yet. Waveform generation is now 20% faster, and AAC saving has been sped up as well.
  • Enhancement: Chapterized AAC and MP3 files now use the Album tag as the Title for the file.
  • Enhancement: Fission will automatically set a default title based on any file's name, and set Artwork from a video file's preview frame.
  • Enhancement: Save operations can now be cancelled if necessary.
  • Bug Fix: AIFF/WAV limits are now checked before transcoding, so that malformed (overly long/large) AIFF and WAV files won't be created.
  • Bug Fix: Compatibility with rare and poorly-formed AAC files has been improved.
  • Bug Fix: Several small cosmetic improvements have been made, including fixes to the “Where” field, file name display in the Inspector, and the Comment field.
  • Bug Fix: The “.m4b” and “.aif” extensions are now allowed by the Save panel.

New in Fission 2.3.0 (Feb 16, 2016)

  • MP3 Chapters: Fission now supports saving chapter marks in MP3 files, as well as editing existing chapterized MP3s. MP3 chapters are handy for podcasters in particular.
  • Faster MP3 Encoding: MP3 encoding has been sped up, and is now 3x faster.
  • Damage Visualization: When Fission loads a damaged file, it will now visually display bad packets in the waveform.
  • The display of bitrates for AIFF and WAV files has been improved.
  • This update fixes a bug where partial M4A files, created when a recording issue occurred in Audio Hijack, failed to load.
  • An issue where certain lesser-used types of AAC files would not load properly has been corrected.
  • An audible glitch that could occasionally be heard at the end of playback of some audio files has been corrected.
  • A rare bug where Fission might crash with certain types of AIFF or WAV files has been fixed.
  • The software update mechanism (powered by Sparkle) now runs securely over HTTPS.
  • Other minor fixes and improvements have been made.

New in Fission 2.2.5 (Sep 18, 2015)

  • This version improves file support for several different file types. First up, loading of AAC and Apple Lossless is much faster.
  • In addition, support for Apple Lossless files has been improved, with support for the rare 20-bit ALAC format.
  • Tag support for FLAC files has also been improved.
  • Rounding out our improved file support, chapterized AAC files are now better supported as well.
  • Fission is now fully certified for use with Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan).
  • Other minor fixes and improvements have been made.

New in Fission 2.2.4 (Jun 2, 2015)

  • A crash was introduced in version 2.2.3, which could occur when importing a file. We've fixed this problem, so import away!
  • Speaking of importing, the engine for it has been fully updated to ffmpeg 2.6.2. Nifty!
  • Previously, certain FLAC files could cause Fission to crash. We did not like this, so we decided to squash that bug.
  • An issue where some MP4 files wouldn't open correctly has also been rectified.
  • Other minor fixes and improvements have been made.

New in Fission 2.2.3 (May 8, 2015)

  • A minor problem with ALAC files has been corrected.
  • Some issues with @2x Retina art have been corrected.
  • A slew of other minor fixes and improvements have been made.

New in Fission 2.2.2 (Aug 14, 2014)

  • A rare crash caused by closing a window has been fixed.
  • An Apple Lossless transcoding regression, triggered by files with 4096 packet size, has been fixed.
  • A hidden preference to disable the limit on Smart Splits is now available.
  • Logging in the Saving pipeline is now improved, and more detailed optional error reporting.
  • Fission is now more forgiving of slightly malformed FLAC files, enabling them to be imported without a problem.
  • Several other minor fixes and improvements have been made.

New in Fission 2.2.1 (Jun 5, 2014)

  • An incompatibility with ALAC files generated by non-Apple applications like doubleTwist's "AirPlay Recorder" has been addressed.
  • Fission's Start Window is now prevented from showing if Fission was launched by opening a file.
  • We now have consistent bitrate options across all Rogue Amoeba apps, because consistencyness is next to godliness.
  • The way Fission saves ringtones has been updated for better compatibility, using the import folder. Mac App Store users should take note to delete duplicate files if they occur (this will depend on your iTunes import preferences).
  • The presentation of errors following a batch conversion has been improved.
  • Fission can now open the GSM, MS IMA, QT IMA, and CAF formats, as well as FLAC and ALAC files with non-standard containers or non-standard sample sizes.
  • Unnecessary gaps at the beginning of files when exporting FLAC or ALAC files are no more.
  • Several other minor fixes and improvements have been made.

New in Fission 2.2 (Nov 22, 2013)

  • Fission can now import more audio formats, including support for MPEG layer 1 and 2, AIFF-C, Ogg Vorbis, Shorten, RealAudio, Windows Media Audio (WMA), AMR, QDesign Music, WavePack and Monkey's Audio. Newly accepted file extensions include .mpa, .mp1, .mp2, .ogg, .wv, .ape, and .shn.
  • Several crashes with the Batch Converter, introduced with backend changes made in Fission 2.1.4, are gone with version 2.2. Thanks, Woz!
  • The Start window is now always displayed at launch. After that, if the Start window is manually closed, we won't open it until the next launch.
  • Clicking anywhere in the artwork well now properly selects it.
  • Fission now reports file sizes in powers-of-ten, to match the Mac OS X Finder.
  • Outdated text references to QuickTime importing have been removed.

New in Fission 2.1.4 (Oct 15, 2013)

  • Fission now offers full support for developer preview versions of Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks).
  • Fission is now a 64-bit application. That is literally twice as many bits as before. You probably won't notice much difference just yet, but this will enable performance gains in the future.
  • The QuickTime engine for opening file has been replaced with our own internal libav. Some extremely rare file formats may no longer be supported. Get in touch if you a format you use is missing.
  • Fission has an entirely new saving pipeline. Hopefully, you won't even notice, it will simply work. Oh, saving a ringtone from the Mac App Store version of Fission works a bit better, that's potentially noticeable.
  • Dragging a song from iTunes into the Mac App Store version of Fission should now work the first time. Previously, it only worked after two tries. Yes, really.
  • The License window has been overhauled, with HTML. Neat!
  • Chapters which contain multiple images now load images more logically (grabbing the first image in the chapter).
  • The app now has a hidden "Check for News" option, accessible by pressing option while in the Fission menu.
  • Fission's debugging window has been slimmed down.
  • Fission's now better handles excessively large AAC and Apple Lossless files which violate their respective specifications.
  • Many other small improvements have been made. They're not worth spelling out, but they're in there, and they're nice.

New in Fission 2.1.3 (May 8, 2013)

  • The name of the game is bug fixes. Version 2.1.3 removes almost two dozen incidences of stupidity, dumbness, and boneheadedness.
  • The Batch Converter has been updated to properly handle all Windows Media files, as well as ALAC-encoded CAF files, and more.
  • Several additional VoiceOver improvements have been made, with labels on previously unlabeled controls. We're always working to improve this.
  • Clip tabs now always show the clip name.
  • A crash which could occur when inserting silence has been fixed.
  • There's much more - it's all minor, but it's all very nice to have fixed as well.

New in Fission 2.1.2 (Feb 15, 2013)

  • A problem some users saw with Exporting and Transcoding acting unresponsive, even as it worked, should now be gone. Fission is sorry if it seemed to be ignoring you while it worked.
  • The Start Window now remembers its state between files and launches. If you close it, it'll stay pretty well closed, and not annoy you so much. But please, don't you forget about it.
  • Fission now better remembers previously used settings for saving and exporting. Amnesia be gone!
  • Progress bars should now appear more reliably when exporting audio.
  • An issue where the Mac App Store version of Fission would fail to save to a previously-specified location is now fixed.
  • Several small issues related to re-encoding of audio have been corrected, preventing unnecessary re-encoding.
  • Fission is now better a reading in chapterized AAC files. It was already pretty great, to be sure, but now it's even better.
  • Several VoiceOver improvements have been made, with labels on previously unlabeled controls. We've still got more work to do, so watch for further updates, VoiceOver users!
  • A conflict with Many Tricks' window manager Moom, which caused the selection of split points to fail, has been handled.
  • Assorted rare crashes should now be even more rare, so rare that you might suspect they're gone entirely, which they are!
  • There are probably other improvements which we've forgotten. The best way to be sure you've got them is, of course, to update.

New in Fission 2.1.1 (Jan 8, 2013)

  • Fission's Batch Converter now accepts folders (containing audio files), as well as individual files.
  • The Save panel now correctly remembers the last location to which files were saved.
  • An issue with chapterized AACs and very large image files has been corrected.
  • Fission now has a hidden preference, accessible via the Debugging window, to check for and prevent rare Normalization clipping.
  • Several other small bugs have been corrected.
  • An issue where attempting to Save (with Cmd-S or by choosing Save) would cause an error for users of the Mac App Store version has been corrected.

  • Using "i" and "o" to create a selection has been improved, allowing playback while creating the selection.
  • Any file can now use the "Save As Chapterized AAC" option, regardless of its current file format or number of clips present.
  • Fission's Save dialogs now properly handle file extensions.
  • Files imported via QuickTime now only allow for an Export, to avoid overwriting the original file.
  • In addition to the iTunes dragging noted above, the Start window now takes drags of all document types Fission can open.
  • An issue where converting file formats erroneously produced CBR files (despite claiming to make VBR files) has been corrected.
  • A problem where the Undo menu item unhelpfully said "Undo Button" for several actions has been fixed.
  • The Start window no longer appears than immediately disappears on launch, when Fission is opening to a file. It also no longer immediately reappears when closed if no other windows are open.
  • The delete and backspace keys now both perform the same expected functions.
  • Issues caused by Fission overzealously writing its file icon, such as other applications not correctly changing the icon at a later point, have been removed.
  • Erroneous errors which could pop up when cancelling transcoding, exporting, or saving have been fixed.
  • When an error occurs during Batch Conversion, the Batch Converter continues with the rest of the files after the error dialog is dismissed.
  • Closing the Start window no longer immediately re-opens it.
  • "Remove & Split" has been renamed to "Remove and Split" in the Clip menu.
