Default Folder X Changelog

What's new in Default Folder X 6.0.5

Apr 16, 2024
  • You can paste or type a complete path into the Quick Search window to open an item at that location.
  • Default Folder X now shows the correct name, icon and location for OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box folders.
  • The history of recent Finder windows is updated when any tab of a Finder window is closed, not just when a window or its frontmost tab is closed.
  • Items that you've added to the Finder drawer or Drag Zone are updated instead of being removed when the items they refer to are moved or renamed.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause a Finder window to jump back to its previous location and size after being resized if Default Folder X's drawer was attached to it.
  • If you've customized the name of a Favorite, changing that Favorite to point to a different folder will not change its name.
  • The ToggleFinderDrawer AppleScript command returns a boolean result indicating whether the drawer is open.
  • Fixed a bug in Finder-click that prevented it from recognizing QSpace windows on a second display.
  • There's a new Info button in the Folders tab of the settings to explain what a Folder Set is.
  • Updated support for Alfred 5.

New in Default Folder X 6.0.4 (Jan 3, 2024)

  • Eliminated a delay that could occur when Save dialogs initially pop up.
  • In the Menus settings, you can specify the app you want Default Folder X to use when opening folders.
  • Added Finder-click support for QSpace and QSpace Pro. You must be using at least QSpace 4.2.1 or QSpace Pro 4.2.2.
  • Quick Search results now include an icon to indicate whether the result was found in your favorites, recent items, or apps.
  • When there is nothing in the search field, Quick Search will show a list of recently used items in all modes except Spotlight search.
  • There's a new command in the Quick Search contextual menu to copy a file or folder to the clipboard so you can paste it in the Finder, into emails, etc.
  • The Quick Search contextual menu contains commands to add or remove an item from favorites or from your recent history.
  • Pressing Command-, (comma) in the Quick Search window will bring up Default Folder X's settings window.
  • Added a keyboard shortcut to pop up the menu in the Quick Search window.
  • Disabled "smart" insert and delete in the wide filename field in Save dialogs so extra spaces aren't added or removed when cutting and pasting.
  • The menus for recent files, folders, apps and finder windows would display incorrectly after clearing all items in the menu. This has been fixed.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented you from entering comments or tags in a Save dialog on Monterey or earlier.
  • Improved the tracking of recently used files, folders and applications.

New in Default Folder X 6.0.3 (Dec 8, 2023)

  • Any folder or file opened or revealed using Default Folder X will be added to its appropriate "Recent" menu. Previously, items selected from Favorites would not be added.
  • When selecting text in the filename edit field within Save dialogs, periods are treated as word boundaries in all cases, rather than just between the filename and extension.
  • In the Quick Search window, pressing Option+Return copies the path of the selected item. This is reflected in the keyboard shortcuts shown in the contextual menu.
  • Items dragged and dropped to Default Folder X's icon in the menu bar are added to its "Recent" menus.
  • Command+S works correctly to confirm a Save As dialog with the wider filename edit field enabled.
  • Added a "Close Drawer" command to the contextual menu for the Finder drawer.
  • In the Tags pane below file dialogs, tags added using Default Folder X are listed before recent tags assigned to files and folders by other apps.
  • Worked around a bug in Sonoma that caused menu items to shift to the right when the Option key was pressed to change the sorting order.
  • In macOS Monterey and earlier, Spotlight, RayCast, Alfred and LaunchBar work correctly when invoked while a Save As dialog is on-screen.
  • Fixed errors that occurred when recent items (Files, Folders, Apps or Finder Windows) were included inline in Default Folder X's menu.
  • An alert is displayed if Default Folder X's menu bar icon is hidden behind the notch on newer MacBooks.
  • Corrected a bug that could prevent recent menus from being sorted correctly.
  • Added support for the Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) java app.

New in Default Folder X 6.0.2 (Nov 22, 2023)

  • New features:
  • In the Quick Search window, you can now browse through all recent items by hitting the Down Arrow key when there's no search string.
  • Added Command-L as a default keyboard shortcut for "Enter Filename" in Save dialogs so you can easily move back to the filename edit field.
  • Changed the layout of items in the Finder drawer so they're clustered together in the center rather than distributed across the entire width of the drawer.
  • In Default Folder X > Settings > Recent, "Forget All Recently Used Items" now also removes recent Applications and the "rebound" history.
  • Bug fixes:
  • Corrected problems that could cause Default Folder X to switch folders in file dialogs slowly or not at all.
  • Resolved an issue that caused the cursor to disappear in file dialogs in macOS Sonoma.
  • Fixed a bug that could result in a default folder not working if it applied to only a specific file extension.
  • Fixed problems with keyboard focus and text selection in Save dialogs not working correctly under certain conditions.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented double-clicking on items in the Drag Zone from working on some systems.
  • Corrected an issue with Default Folder X's preview window failing to resize when a file dialog was moved.
  • Fixed a problem with Default Folder X getting stuck if you tried to go to a hidden iCloud Drive folder in a file dialog.
  • Resolved problems with slow or non-responsive file dialogs within Default Folder X's own settings window on Sonoma.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Default Folder X to show recent items in some system folders when it shouldn't have.
  • Resolved a bug when syncing settings via iCloud that could delete a folder set when iCloud Drive syncing failed in a particular manner.
  • Fixed a problem that could cause the keyboard to stop responding if you customized Default Folder X's menu to show recent items in the top level of the menu rather than in a submenu.
  • Corrected an issue that could result in Default Folder X's toolbar not aligning correctly with a file dialog after the dialog was moved from one display to another.
  • Reenabled the user defaults option to show a custom color icon in the menu bar.

New in Default Folder X 6.0.1 (Oct 17, 2023)

  • New features:
  • There's an alternate style for Default Folder X's icon in the menu bar. You can change it in the General tab of the settings.
  • The keyboard shortcuts for search options in the Quick Search window have changed and are now configurable in Settings > Shortcuts.
  • Hitting the Quick Search keyboard shortcut twice in a row will pop up the window with a search mode of "All".
  • In Quick Search, Command+Down Arrow steps through your previous searches.
  • Quick Search now remembers your selected search mode across restarts.
  • Applications in /System/Library/CoreServices will not be remembered in the Recent Apps history.
  • The Finder toolbar menu will include the About / Settings / Help / Quit menu if Default Folder X's icon is turned off in the menu bar.
  • Removed the option to hold down the Command key to open a folder in Terminal. This conflicted with the standard use of the Command key to reveal an item in the Finder.
  • You can turn on a setting to disable Default Folder X's detection of apps that have custom dark themes. This reduces the frequency of notifications in Sonoma's menu bar telling you that Default Folder X is capturing your screen. Use this command in Terminal: "defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5 toolbarIgnoresAppDarkMode 1".
  • Inclusion of files and folders synced by cloud services is now disabled by default.
  • Improved the appearances of the menu bar icon and Finder toolbar icons.
  • Bug fixes:
  • Fixed a conflict which prevented TextExpander from working in Save dialogs.
  • Resolved a bug that caused performance and stability problems on macOS 12 and earlier.
  • Worked around a bug in Sonoma that sends keyboard input to the wrong text field in Save dialogs.
  • Fixed a problem with the Finder toolbar buttons being unresponsive until Default Folder X was relaunched.
  • Corrected a problem during drag and drop operations with menus not displaying folders that have large numbers of items.
  • Fixed a problem with Save Action settings not being synced properly between Macs when iCloud sync is turned on.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when the menu bar menu was configured to have the About / Settings / Help / Quit items above another menu item.
  • When validating a license, Default Folder X will always try to connect to our server so connection management apps like Little Snitch will prompt you to allow it. Previously, it wouldn't trigger Little Snitch because it wouldn't even try to connect after the system told it the host was unreachable.
  • Corrected a bug in which some keyboard shortcuts couldn't be changed in Settings > Folders > Favorites after deleting a favorite.
  • Changed license prompts to ensure consistent use of the term "License number" instead of "Serial number".
  • Resolved a conflict that caused SnagIt's mouse tracking to slow down when taking screenshots.

New in Default Folder X 6.0 (Sep 25, 2023)

  • Use the keyboard to quickly access favorites, recent files, folders, apps or Finder windows. Pop up Default Folder X's new Quick Search window with a keyboard shortcut, type a few characters of an item's name, and then quickly go to it in a file dialog or open it in the Finder.
  • Wide filename field when saving files. Pretty self-explanatory - the default macOS Save As dialogs have an edit box that's way too narrow to accommodate a descriptive file name. Default Folder X 6 makes it bigger.
  • Drag and drop files and folders to Default Folder X's icon in the menu bar to move or copy them to another location. Pick a destination folder quickly from DFX's Recent and Favorites menus, or drill down to any folder using it's hierarchical menus.
  • Customize Default Folder X's menu in your menu bar. Add, remove and reorganize menus and menu items to fit your workflow.
  • Perform actions on files after saving them. Automatically open the saved file, attach it to an email, or run AppleScripts, Automator Workflows or Shortcuts on it.
  • Sync your Default Folder X settings between Macs. If you've got more than one Mac with the same file and folder organization, sync your settings via iCloud so Default Folder X works the same on both machines.
  • More powerful drawer in the Finder. Default Folder X's Finder drawer has been rewritten to be more useful and intuitive. Use it as a temporary drag-and-drop holding space, or as a location for often used files and folders.
  • Support for macOS 14 Sonoma. Yes, it's compatible with Apple's latest and greatest.
  • Other new features:
  • Finder label colors are shown in the menus.
  • Recently used Applications are now tracked.
  • The Finder Windows menu can now be sorted alphabetically by holding down the Option key.
  • The Option key toggles Default Folder X's menu sorting between sort-by-name and sort-by-date.
  • The path to a selected item is shown in the Info tab below Open dialogs. Click on the path to copy it.
  • Keywords from PDF files are included in the metadata shown in the Info pane below Open dialogs.
  • Finder-click optionally recognizes folders _within_ Finder windows, not just the folder associated with the Finder window itself. Enable this using Settings > Open & Save > Behavior > Choose folders within windows when you click on them.
  • Support has been added for the macOS Shortcuts app so you can query and control Default Folder X from Shortcuts.
  • Selecting "Show Item in Finder" in the Finder drawer or Drag Zone will open the item in an alternate file browser (like Path Finder) if one is configured and running.
  • Finder-click now distinguishes between Finder, ForkLift and Path Finder windows by showing the icon of the app that owns them.
  • Each time Default Folder X switches to a default folder, you'll see a reminder until you choose "don't tell me again". This should help folks who inadvertently configure a default folder and are later confused by the behavior.
  • If you assign keyboard shortcuts to Default Folder X's menus in file dialogs, those shortcuts are shown in the toolbar's tooltips.
  • When popping up a single menu using AppleScript, the menu items for Settings, About, etc will not be added to the bottom of the menu.
  • You can set up an AppleScript to provide default filenames in Save As dialogs instead of just getting "Untitled". This can be used to add the current date to the default name, apply a standard naming convention for certain documents, etc.
  • Default Folder X's ShowMenu AppleScript command now has an option to show a Recent Apps menu.
  • Added more detail to the command descriptions in the AppleScript scripting dictionary.
  • Improved support for the "increase contrast" mode that's available in System Settings > Accessibility > Display.
  • Improvements to the Settings user interface:
  • Settings have been reorganized to make them easier to navigate and understand.
  • Settings for recent items, including excluding recent items within certain folders, have been given their own tab in the Settings window.
  • You can reorder folder sets in Default Folder X > Settings > Folders > Edit Folder Sets. They can be dragged up and down in the list or moved using the arrow buttons.
  • Favorites and default folders can be copied or moved between folder sets via a contextual menu in Settings > Folders.
  • The Edit Folder Sets window is resizable and supports multiple selection (Command+click) for reordering and removing folder sets.
  • You can turn on the tracking of recent items for cloud sync services on a service-by-service basis. When turned on, items synced from the cloud are treated as if you opened them.
  • In Settings > Folders you can now select multiple favorites or default folders when reordering, deleting or showing them in the Finder.
  • Favorite and default folders in Settings > Folders are now grayed out if they refer to a folder that's been deleted or moved.
  • Added an option in Default Folder X > Settings > Menus to show items with color tags at the top of menus.
  • There's a keyboard shortcut to move keyboard focus to the file listing in Open and Save dialogs.
  • Bug fixes:
  • Switching between folders in Open and Save dialogs is more reliable.
  • Fixed the assignment of keyboard shortcuts in Recent menus so they're on the correct items when menus are sorted by name rather than by date.
  • If a minimized Save dialog pops up, Default Folder X usually maximizes it for you. It will not do so if that causes the dialog to extend past the sides or bottom of the screen.
  • The Finder toolbar menu no longer includes "About Default Folder X", Settings and other application-level items.
  • Changes to the system Light / Dark Mode are immediately applied when there's a file dialog open.
  • Revealing an alias in the Finder will correctly reveal the alias file rather than the target of the alias.
  • Editing dates in the Info pane below Open dialogs works more smoothly.
  • When selecting a destination for the Copy, Move, and Create Alias commands, choosing a folder from the Recent Folders menu now correctly switches to that folder.

  • Creating a new, empty folder set and then immediately creating a duplicate works correctly.
  • Fixed a bug in which hierarchical menus could show iCloud Drive nested within itself.
  • Disk space is no longer shown in menus in the Computer submenu because disk space no longer has meaning under APFS.
  • Fixed the "Mirror recent and favorite items in ~/Library" feature so it works correctly for filenames that have a '/' character in them.
  • Worked around a bug in the Bay ROES app that prevented it from launching when Default Folder X was running.

New in Default Folder X 5.7.8 (May 31, 2023)

  • Adding Default Folder X to your Login Items list removes any other copies that are already there.

  • After auto-downloading an update, a progress window is shown while the update is installed.
  • Default Folder X won't fill up Notification Center with repeated update notifications if you're away from your Mac.
  • If Default Folder X has auto- populated the tag field in a save dialog because you're replacing an existing file, typing into the filename field will no longer erase those tags.
  • Fixed a problem that prevented some alert and progress messages from displaying in the license dialog when in full screen mode.
  • Fixed a hang that could occur if Default Folder X tried to switch to a folder that had been deleted.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause Finder comments not to be set when saving a file.

  • Your registration code can now be automatically entered by clicking on an URL. I'll start including URLs in purchase confirmation emails soon.
  • Added an option to hide unavailable folders in the menus. Currently only accessible via Terminal using the command: defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5 menusShowUnmountedFolders -bool false
  • Added PrintMaster 7 to the standard exception list to avoid a conflict with it.
  • The toolbar icons in the white bezel are a lighter gray so the appearance isn't as stark.
  • Reduced CPU and energy usage.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 14 (Dec 26, 2015)

  • License checking is now working. If you imported your v4 preferences and have a v4 license, you should get a prompt to validate it and to check whether your upgrade is free or not (if you purchased your license after June 1, 2015, the upgrade is free - otherwise it's $14.95 USD).

  • Tags are now correctly copied when you click on a file in a Save dialog to copy its name.

  • Fixed Finder-click so you can click on the Desktop on multiple-monitor configurations when Mission Control is maintaining separate spaces for each monitor.
  • I cannot fix problems with Adobe Photoshop's "Export As" dialog because Default Folder X's absence there is due to a bug in Photoshop. I've posted a bug report in Adobe's forums (which seems the only way to report a bug). I'd encourage everyone to do likewise so Adobe sees it as a problem that needs to be fixed. You can "me too" my post here: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/mac-photoshop-file-export-as-doesnt-support-accessibility-and-default-folder-x-5
  • Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo sometimes bring up a file dialog behind their main window. Default Folder X makes sure that this window comes to the front.

  • Fixed a graphics bug that could draw the minimal toolbar incorrectly when switching it to or from the left side of the file dialog.

  • Fixed a race condition crash in the Rename command.
  • Default Folder X no longer uses QuickLook thumbnail icons in menus because it slows performance.
  • Cmd-D with Open in Terminal turned on took you to the Desktop in Terminal. This has been fixed.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 12 (Dec 10, 2015)

  • Fixed Favorite shortcut activation in file dialogs (they didn't work if you tabbed out of an active file dialog and then back to it).
  • Default Folder X's bezel didn't hide itself when Quicklook previews popped up in a file dialog. It does now.
  • Files are no longer shown in the hierarchical menus for Save dialogs. Argue with me if you see a reason they should be shown.
  • Pressing Return in the tagging or comment fields will now activate the Open / Save button in the file dialog.

  • The iCloud menu item in the Computer menu now works.
  • The default shortcut for New Folder is now Command-Shift-N.
  • Added commands to the Shortcuts prefs for adding default and favorite folders.
  • Fixed a bizarre graphics glitch in Office 2011 and other Carbon applications.
  • Selecting a file from a hierarchical menu in an Open dialog did not open the file using the file dialog. This has been fixed.
  • Hierarchical menus are now sorted in "Finder order" - alphabetically with numbers sorted intelligently. I'm looking for feedback - does this make the menus too slow on your machine?
  • Default Folder X would fail to detect the top document's folder if the save dialog was not a sheet.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 9 (Nov 28, 2015)

  • Switch to Notification Center to less obtrusively and more reliably post update notifications.
  • Added an option to turn on and off fully automated updates.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 8 (Nov 28, 2015)

  • Fixed a startup crash that could occur if a file dialog was open and frontmost when Default Folder X launched.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the cursor to disappear and Default Folder X to get stuck when a file dialog was invoked from a button (like when adding an attachment to a message in Mail).
  • Fixed a problem that could cause saves to fail when an application prompted for a folder instead of a file (Save All Attachments, Move To from a document titlebar, etc)
  • Fixed switching of initial folders for Filemaker Pro 11
  • Hierarchical menus now follow aliases.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 7 (Nov 24, 2015)

  • Hiding and showing of Default Folder X's bezel works better when the search and tagging fields pop up their menus.
  • Fixed problems with the mouse cursor disappearing or jumping.
  • The preview below Open dialogs now shows the number of items in a folder rather than the useless fact that the folder itself is zero bytes in size.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 6 (Nov 23, 2015)

  • Default Folder X will now return 32-bit Carbon apps to the folder you were in when you last opened or saved something. This fixes problems with MS Office 2011 and other applications always starting in your Documents folder. If this is still a problem for any of your apps, please let me know.
  • Finder Click now also allows you to click on the Desktop (you need to turn it on in the preferences).
  • Inconsistent behavior with Adobe CC 2015, Mail, and other applications has been fixed.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause a crash while identifying a new file dialog.

  • Dragging a non-topmost Finder window hides the Finder drawer so it doesn't hop around the screen.
  • The Finder drawer now works correctly with Path Finder.
  • Default Folder X correctly remembers if you've removed one of the default shortcuts.
  • The preference converter now copies your v4 license information (though v5 doesn't do anything with it yet).

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 5 (Nov 19, 2015)

  • Fixed the elusive "The application Default Folder X is not open anymore" error. The fix is in this version, but you may still see the error one more time when updating from the last version (which still had the bug).
  • Fixed a startup crash
  • Fixed a crash that could occur randomly while DFX is running (threading issue)
  • Fixed a problem with crash logging
  • If you have any of the Finder buttons enabled, you will be prompted to restart the Finder when you first run this build. That's expected behavior.

New in Default Folder X 5.0 Beta 4 (Nov 18, 2015)

  • Shortcuts display correctly in the preferences when using Grammarian or Japanese text input modes.
  • In Save sheets, Finder window shadows now appear above instead of under the document window.
  • Folders that are within temporary or hidden folders no longer appear in the Recent Folder menu, and won't be used when defaulting to the current document's folder.
  • Folder URLs are now standardized before adding them so that duplicates don't get added to the Recent menus.
  • The contents of folders on network drives are now sorted alphabetically in the menus.
  • Changing the number of recent items in the prefs immediately changes the number of items shown in the menus.
  • More changes were made to ensure that DFX quits cleanly in order to avoid "The application Default Folder X is not open anymore" errors.
  • Changing folders now works correctly in 32-bit Carbon applications (like BBEdit and TextWrangler) when using Dvorak keyboard layouts.

  • Fixed path menu failing to update when a file dialog switches to a new folder.
  • Eliminated flicker in the path menu when a file dialog first opens.

  • Default Folder X now works correctly in the open dialogs of old Carbon applications when the sidebar in the dialog is hidden.
  • Finder window detection now works better when you switch folders in a Finder window.
  • Tweaked the recent file and folder toolbar icons to make them more distinguishable from one another.
  • Removed Cmd-Q in Default Folder X to prevent you from accidentally quitting it.

  • More information displayed for selected files.
  • A new drag & drop sidebar for quick access to files and folders (this is still a work in progress).

New in Default Folder X 4.7.4 (Sep 22, 2015)

  • The latest version of TypeIt4Me is now supported.
  • If you're running El Capitan and System Integrity Protection is turned on, Default Folder X will put up a warning that you have to either turn off SIP or upgrade to version 5 before it can enhance Open and Save dialogs. Version 5 is still under development but should be available soon. Anyone purchasing now will receive the version 5 upgrade for free.
  • Fixed alias file resolution so that Default Folder X gives up when it encounters a corrupted alias instead of repeatedly trying to resolve it.
  • Fixed a bug in the Rename feature that could remove the filename extension from a file if its extension was hidden.

New in Default Folder X 4.7.3 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • Fixed problems when running under beta versions of El Capitan. Note that to run this version of Default Folder X under El Capitan, you must disable System Integrity Protection. A new version of DFX that's fully compatible with El Capitan is in the works.
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in Default Folder X refusing to let Carbon apps specify the starting folder for a file dialog.
  • Corrected rebound code so that Default Folder X won't mistakenly select a folder when the previously selected file is no longer there.
  • Default Folder X used to prevent applications from defaulting to the iCloud folder because OS X forced all iCloud-enabled apps to start there and few people actually wanted that to happen. Yosemite no longer does this, so Default Folder X now treats iCloud Drive like any other folder.
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in the iCloud menu item in the Disks menu having the wrong keyboard shortcut (command-shift-A instead of command-shift-I).
  • Updated for compatibility with Strata Design 3D CX 8.

  • Corrected a problem that could cause Default Folder X to hang while building its menus if it encounters a corrupted alias file in a favorite or recent folder.

  • Eliminated a problem that could cause the Save button to stop functioning after renaming a file in a Save As dialog.
  • Default Folder X's Get Info function now works correctly in French, German, Japanese and Danish.
  • Corrected a bug that resulted in the Purchase item being included in Default Folder X's menus even if you'd already purchased a license and entered your registration code.
  • If you change favorite or default folders in System Preferences, those changes now take effect immediately rather than when you close the Default Folder X preference pane.
  • If you open an item within a document package, Default Folder X will not add that item's enclosing folder to its Recent Folders menu. If you want Default Folder X to add those folders, Option-click on the Settings button and turn on the "AddRecentFoldersWithinPackages" checkbox.
  • Default Folder X will not try to enhance Flash Player when running on Lion because sandboxing restrictions prevent it from doing so.

If the problem persists on your machine, Option-click on the Settings button in Default Folder X and turn on the ShowHiddenFinderWindows checkbox.
  • Added Command-Delete handling to Save dialogs as well as Open dialogs.

New in Default Folder X 4.7 (Apr 7, 2015)

  • The filename edit field in Save dialogs is now resized to be as wide as possible, letting you see and edit long filenames without scrolling.
  • Default Folder X will intercept Command-Delete in file dialogs to invoke its "Move to Trash" command instead of the built-in OS X behavior. This results in Default Folder X showing a warning before items are moved to the Trash, rather than trashing files and folders without confirmation, as OS X does by default.
  • Fixed a problem that could cause long delays in Default Folder X when some disks or network volumes were unavailable.
  • On Mac OS 10.10.3 and higher, Default Folder X will no longer try to fix the ever-growing-save-dialog bug (because Apple has finally fixed it).
  • Corrected a bug that resulted in Finder comments being duplicated when they're saved.
  • Fixed "Go to folder in Terminal" so that it works correctly when a folder's name contains non-roman characters.
  • In its Rename dialog, Default Folder X will no longer try to find a filename's extension when the extension is hidden.

  • Corrected an issue that could cause some applications (such as Monosnap) to save files with the wrong filename.

  • Default Folder X previously didn’t use its Rebound feature in column view because it changed the way the arrow keys worked when navigating Open dialogs with the keyboard. Rebound is now enabled in column view - if the changes in keyboard behavior bother you, Option-click on the Settings button in Default Folder X and turn on the NoReboundInColumnView checkbox.
  • On some Macs, Default Folder X caused OS X to switch to the high performance GPU when showing previews of audio files in its preview window. Audio previews are now disabled by default. • defaults write NSGlobalDomain OMUpgradeDebugLevel 1
  • To turn the progress messages back off, execute this command in Terminal:
  • defaults delete NSGlobalDomain OMUpgradeDebugLevel
  • Fixed a bug so the "Show hidden Finder windows" setting works again.

New in Default Folder X 4.3.5 (Dec 2, 2009)

  • Fixed an error which could leave Default Folder X's controls on-screen after a Save dialog was dismissed. This would occur in Carbon applications if you entered a Spotlight tag or comment and then clicked Save or Cancel in the first Save dialog to come up after the application was launched.
  • There's now a switch to disable the updating of OpenMeta tags. The latest version of OpenMeta uses different names for its tags, and therefore has to convert all your existing tags to the new format. This can use a lot of CPU time, so you may want to wait and do it while your computer is idle. Note that if you use Default Folder X for OpenMeta tagging, your old tags must be converted before Default Folder X will see them. However, if you only use tagging in a specific context, such as in your email using MailTags, you can safely disable the tag conversion. To turn off tag updating, option-click on the Settings button in Default Folder X's preferences, then turn on the DisableOpenMetaUpgrade checkbox.

  • Full support for Snow Leopard, including running in 64 bit applications and support for garbage-collected memory management.
  • Corrected a problem on Snow Leopard that could cause Default Folder X's hierarchical path menu to freeze or crash.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause DFPreviewServer to consume excessive amounts of CPU time and memory. This occurred when previewing very large files that Mac OS X incorrectly identifies as text files.
  • You can list items in hierarchical menus chronologically rather than alphabetically by holding down the Control key.
  • Corrected a problem in the "Make Save dialogs automatically default to the current document's folder" setting that would cause Default Folder X to default to the top level of your hard disk or your home folder in certain applications (including Address Book).

  • You can globally set a minimum file dialog size and column width. Use these commands in terminal to set the values:

  • Default Folder X's "New Folder" command would not work in some applications when creating a folder inside a folder that was reached by double-clicking on an alias. This has been fixed.

New in Default Folder X 4.2.1 (Jul 7, 2009)

  • Default Folder X now gives you file previews in its menus. As you mouse through Default Folder X's hierarchical menus from the menu bar, you'll see a preview of each file. Hover there for a couple of seconds and the preview will enlarge for a better view.
  • In Open and Save As dialogs, Default Folder X now puts a "Computer" item at the top of the folder hierarchy in the path menu.
  • New Spotlight tags were sometimes not written out to OpenMeta's shared recent tag list. This has been fixed.

  • Previews now correctly follow aliases so that a preview of the original file is shown when you select an alias in an Open dialog.

  • This release is compatible with the latest development build of Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

  • Partially worked around an AppleScript bug in Firefox. This bug prevents other applications from getting the URL of the current page from Firefox when Default Folder X is running, meaning that applications like LittleSnapper and EagleFiler cannot take snapshots of web pages. • A slick, HUD-style user interface for the toolbar, preview, and Spotlight windows that enhance Open and Save dialogs.
  • A new preview window that floats below every Open dialog. Default Folder X uses QuickLook to generate preview images, displays file information such as size, kind, and creation and modification dates, and allows you to see and change Finder labels, permissions, and other attributes.
  • Full-screen previews of files by clicking on an icon in the preview window.
  • The ability to set the Finder label color for a file while you're in a file dialog.
  • A new "Reveal in Finder" command that allows you to locate the selected item in a file dialog using the Finder.
