New in Cubase 10.5 (Jul 23, 2020)

  • New features:
  • New Range and Event Editing functions [Pro/Artist]:
  • We have added some new functions to the Range Editing menu: Range to Next Event/Range to Previous Event, Enlarge Range to Next Event/Enlarge Range to Previous Event, Cut Head/Cut Tail, and Set Spacer between Selected Events. Cut Head/Cut Tail can especially speed up your audio cleanup workflow. There are no default key commands assigned to these functions, so feel free to adjust them to your workflow.
  • Plug-in Report [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • After the issues that some of you had with third party plug-ins following the latest OS updates, we have added the option to create an extensive plug-in report in the VST Plug-in manager, with detailed information about your system’s installed plug-ins,. The report can be used to help with troubleshooting or to create an overview of the plug-in installations on your system when not running Cubase.
  • Safe Start Mode after unexpected exit [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • In the same vein, if Cubase quits unexpectedly, when you re-start the application the Safe Start window now shows automatically, which will help to point you to the source of the problem - whether Cubase, plug-ins or something different. Safe Start gives you a general first indication what went wrong and can help you to decide on further troubleshooting options. You can also easily locate the crash report from within this window.
  • Colorize Selected Channels [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • Colorized mixer channels were a longtime feature request and we have received a lot of feedback about this feature since its introduction in Cubase 10.5. In Cubase 10.5.20 you will now find a new Show Color for Selected Channel option in the User Interface preferences, which allows you to highlight the selected channel by colorizing it.
  • Key commands added for Grid Types [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • We have added new key command menu options for selecting specific grid types. This is very handy if you are creating your own macros which include switching grid types. Again, these commands are not assigned as defaults. You can find them in the Edit category. Use Quantize and Adapt to Zoom will also work with the same assigned key command in the MIDI Editors.
  • Use Video Follows Edit mode no longer shortens the Project Cursor [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • The Project Cursor is now shown at its full size in Use Video Follows Edit mode.
  • Remove Multiple Busses [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • You can now remove multiple input or output busses at the same time in the Audio Connections window. This is really useful if you are working with a lot of inputs and outputs.
  • Enhanced Direct Offline Processing [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • The Direct Offline Processing window now allows you to reset audio processes to their default settings.
  • Adjustable Event Opacity [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • The new Event Opacity preference allows you to customize the visibility of the event background.
  • Improved Editing for Level Meters [Pro]:
  • You can now customize the appearance of level meters for all available scales.
  • There are also some general changes that you should be aware of
  • Preference 'Suspend VST3 plug-in processing when no audio signals are received' will be switched off by default [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • In Cubase 10.5.20 this preference (in VST/Plug-ins) will be switched off by default. This eases some technical compatibility issues with third party plug-ins and can improve the general ASIO load. We recommend leaving it switched off for now.
  • Improved MIDI Clock Latency Compensation [Pro/Artist/Elements/LE/AI]:
  • Sending MIDI Clock to external MIDI devices now works more reliably. Latency is now consistently compensated when using higher ASIO buffer sizes and also in situations where latency-inducing plug-ins are inserted within the audio signal path (important when working with external instruments). Furthermore, locating the project cursor at various positions and exporting or rendering audio from external instruments synced to MIDI Clock has been improved.
  • Frequency plug-in - compatibility note [Pro]:
  • We have fixed two bugs which can slightly alter the sound of the plug-in:
  • If you have used a band set to Notch, it did not work correctly with Phase Linear mode enabled for this band. Also, setting a band from Peak to Notch updated the UI, but not always the internal processing. Please review instances of Frequency in case you notice audible differences.
  • We have corrected the following features and functionality:
  • Editing:
  • The Range Tool wasn't working as expected in Use Video Follows Edit mode.
  • Muted audio events in audio parts in the Project window would not show as muted.
  • Import and Export:
  • Importing tracks via Track Archives lost their Expression Maps.
  • Importing multiple audio files with varying sample rates into a project at the same time was not working correctly.
  • File Type Settings in the Audio Export Mixdown were not remembered.
  • Importing Tempo Track data via an .smt file could create an invalid project after saving.
  • MIDI Effects:
  • The Step Designer would not remember MIDI CC setups.
  • Automating the MIDI Gate bypass parameter was not working correctly.
  • MediaBay:
  • MIDI files with the file extensions .mid or .midi were not displayed correctly.
  • The favorites list in the MediaBay was not sorted alphabetically.

  • The language of the Sampler Control tab differed from the language used in the application.
  • Sharing projects across different platforms and systems that contained Sampler Tracks could result in audible artifacts or no sound at all.
  • Using Solo mode in the Sampler Control Zone could result in no sound.
  • Score Editor:
  • The Bars field in the Score Editor was working as expected when using "Split Multi-Rest".
  • Editing the page text could render the application unreliable.
  • Ornamentation appeared when editing several instruments.
  • User Interface:
  • We resolved several contrast issues with black text on a dark background (e.g. when using the MacOS dark mode)
  • The Windows taskbar could hide parts of the application when the taskbar was placed at the top.
  • The color settings in Preferences/User Interface were not migrating correctly from previous versions or were not retrieved correctly via Preferences presets.
  • VST Instruments:
  • Clicking the Output Bus selector for VST instruments loaded as Rack Instruments could render the application unreliable.
  • Removing the Reason Rack plug-in from a project could render the application unreliable.
  • The routing of disabled instrument return channels was incorrect after loading a project and enabling them again.

New in Cubase 10.0.30 (Jun 27, 2019)

  • New Feature:
  • ARA 2 support is now available with this version. This feature can be found under the Extensions heading. There are three ways to apply ARA-capable Extensions to an audio event:
  • Audio Menu > Extensions > Choose Extensions (e.g. Melodyne)

New in Cubase 10.0.20 (Apr 19, 2019)

  • Issues & Improvements:
  • Channel Settings window:
  • The window has been internally reworked to resolve issues such as truncated areas or enlarged faders.
  • Direct Routing and Show Output Chain can be toggled in the Setup Window Layout menu. Other options have been removed. Please check and adapt your Workspaces when this window is included.
  • The Always on Top option is now placed in the right-click menu of the Toolbar (or when clicking on the Set up Toolbar button).
  • Color handling additions:
  • Cubase 10.0.15 re-introduced the Color tool. Cubase 10.0.20 adds some more additions to Color Handling.
  • The previous Set up Colors... button in the Colorize pop-up has been moved to menu Project > Project Colors Setup....
  • In the Presets tab you can easily expand the default color set of 16 colors to 24 or 32. You can also automatically add varying tints on the fly, without ever being forced to setup color shades on your own with a color picker. You can then decide how the colors should be sorted and use the New Color Set area to preview the result.
  • Once you have changed the color set the application tries to match the current colors to the new ones, so the coloring in your projects remains intact (as far as possible).
  • All changes you make in the Project Colors Setup window can now be undone.
  • The main new addition to the Options tab is the return of a preference to allow selecting colors with visible names. Once active, the Colorize pop-ups change to a menu list, showing colors and names together.
  • In the Color Set tab you can manage your color set more easily:
  • Use the cog wheel icon to insert, duplicate, remove and reset specific colors.
  • When you insert a color in-between two other colors, the newly created color is a blend of these two and not plain white.
  • Context menu additions:
  • Additional commands have been added to the context menus within the project and editor windows. The most notable change is the inclusion of a Tools submenu. There is also now a context menu available in the Sample Editor and Audio Part Editor.
  • Intensity parameter in hitpoint detection:
  • The hitpoints section in the Sample Editor now features a new Intensity parameter and allows you to filter hitpoints by additional characteristics beyond peak threshold.
  • Depending on the audio material, one or the other will be more effective. However, a combination of both can help to get even difficult cases of selecting hitpoints under control. Working with threshold and/or intensity, both percussive and tonal material should benefit.
  • Locator range duration:
  • This is a new item in the Transport Zone (and panel or toolbar) which shows you the duration between the left and right locator in the format of the current primary time display.
  • You can also edit this value to adjust the locator range. The left locator position will remain the same and the right locator position is adjusted.
  • Use a simple click on the button of the item to set Locators to Selection or a long click to quickly reverse the locators (see tooltip there).
  • Plug-in (G)UI updates:
  • The following plug-ins include updated graphics for high resolution displays. Some of them have had a complete re-design to continue the graphical rework of the plug-in set:
  • ModMachine
  • AmpSimulator
  • Magneto
  • Quadrafuzz v2
  • TubeCompressor
  • Vintage Compressor
  • VSTDynamics
  • REVelation
  • RoomWorks
  • MonoToStereo
  • Mix6to2
  • Tuner
  • Show notification when switching tool mode with key command:
  • You may have noticed that pressing a key command (e.g. 1 for the object selection tool) shows a yellow notification of your choice of sub tool. If you find it too distracting, you can switch off this notification in the preferences... > Editing > Tools section.
  • Steinberg Library Manager support for Cubase content:
  • This update installs a new version of the Steinberg Library Manager, which is now able to manage not only HALion/Sonic/SE and Groove Agent/SE Content, but also the other Cubase Audio and MIDI Loop content, including PadShop.
  • Vertically zoom in/out on waveform:
  • The waveform zoom sliders in the Project Window, Sample Editor and Part Editor can now be operated via key commands.
  • Dedicated zoom commands have been added to the Edit > Zoom menu and have the default assignment ALT/Option+G and ALT/Option+H.
  • You can change the assignment in Edit > Key Commands... > Zoom.
  • Apple T2 chip audio controller compatibility:
  • Recent Apple Mac computers ship with Apple’s T2 chip, which also provides an audio controller (it’s used when you select the Built-in Audio ASIO driver in the VST Audio System in Cubase).
  • The architecture is different than in the audio controllers used before, so we had to modify our CoreAudio2ASIO component.
  • In situations where you plug cables (e.g. headphones) in or out, port connections are now resolved automatically, so you should always have an output on either internal speakers or devices connected to the headphone jack.
  • In case you need to check details, open the Control Panel for the built-in audio device in the studio setup window.
  • List of resolved issues:
  • An issue has been resolved where the draw tools did not work correctly, depending on the selected snap value.
  • An issue has been resolved where changing tools while the Choose Event Color panel is open could render the application unreliable.
  • An issue has been resolved where the last Expression Map in the Expression Maps Setup window could not be reached when a certain amount of Maps were already present.
  • An issue has been resolved where involving the MIDI plug- ins Arpache 5 & SX could render the application unreliable.

  • An issue has been resolved where the settings of the Maximizer module of the Channel Strip were not correctly applied when using the freeze function.
  • An issue has been resolved where a saved default preset was not applied when the plug-in was inserted via drag & drop from the MediaRack.
  • An issue has been resolved where bypassing plug-ins did not work correctly when plug-ins were inserted that do not support a native bypass mode.
  • An issue has been resolved where MIDI overdub recordings using other DAWs with ReWire introduced a noticable additional latency.
  • An issue has been resolved where re-enabling instrument tracks using instruments with multiple active outputs could lead to orphaned outputs.
  • An issue has been resolved where Monophonic Mode was not correctly restored when loading a project.
  • An issue has been resolved where the value of the Filter Envelope Amount was truncated in the GUI.
  • An issue has been resolved where setting up the Score Editor as Default Editor could leave the application unreliable once the editor was supposed to open in the Lower Zone.

New in Cubase 9.5 (Nov 30, 2017)

  • Zoning 2.0: Speed up your workflow:
  • Three new sections made their way into the right zone to enhance the flow in your work. The new file browser lets you browse, preview and import your media files in your project without leaving the window; the new metering section in the right zone shows the master and loudness meters to have a lock on your mix at any time; and then there’s the Control Room, providing direct access to your cue and monitor mixes.
  • Automation editing just got curves:
  • Cubase 9.5 introduces ultra-precise automation curves for creating and editing smooth transitions, allowing you to go creative with musical build-ups and providing detailed automation lanes — all this while keeping mouse clicks to a minimum. One might think that a streamlined workflow possibly comes at the expense of accuracy. But no, not at all! Even the automation of tracks controlled by VCA faders will incorporate all automation data of the connected tracks and will remain 100% on target.
  • More Metronome:
  • You want the click to follow your signature shift? The new Metronome follows your lead no matter where you’re heading! Compose custom click patterns with up to four different accent levels in the new Click Pattern Editor, and assign several different patterns to the Signature Track. Load your own click sounds or select one of the many pre-installed sounds. Every metronome helps you keep in time, but the new metronome in Cubase 9.5 does this so much more effectively.
  • 64-bit mixing engine: Taking your sound to new heights:
  • Get your mixing down the line — with the new pristine 64-bit floating-point mixing engine you will no longer need to compromise when it comes to quality, precision and realism. The advanced audio engine calculates your summing, mixing and effects processing with double-precision accuracy, performing each task with the utmost level of detail, dynamics and transparency.
  • More inserts now with flexible pre/post fader:
  • By doubling the number of insert slots for VST effects on each track, Cubase 9.5 expands your creative horizon, inviting you to experiment with rich effect combinations and plug-in chains. Whether you want to insert your VST effects before or after the fader, the new flexible insert section lets you dynamically adjust the position of the separator and gives you full control of your signal flow.
  • New looks for Vintage Compressor, Tube Compressor and Magneto III:
  • Three of the most acclaimed VST processors available to Cubase have received a fresh overhaul. The Vintage Compressor, the Tube Compressor and Magneto III tape saturator shine with redesigned user interfaces and workflow-oriented improvements that bring out the best in each of them.
  • Direct Offline Processing: Ideal for frequently used processes:
  • Extend your creative potential with the improved workflow of event-based offline processing. Apply any kind of process offline in a VST plug-in chain for one or multiple selected event — with the feel of real-time effects — without the CPU load. This way you can keep your MixConsole clean but at the same time have paved the way for further non-destructive changes.
  • HALion Sonic SE 3 feat. FLUX wavetable synth:
  • The new FLUX wavetable synthesizer library for HALion Sonic SE combines top-notch sound quality and the latest HALion technology with an engaging user interface. The collection of 100 cutting-edge presets for electronic music productions includes leads, basses, pads and effects. All patches are based on a library of more than 70 exclusively designed waves that can also be used to create your own sounds and patches.
  • Automation range tool:
  • The new Range Tool lets you edit your automations faster, easier and more convenient. Create a selection on an automation lane and edit segments by simply dragging them without having to create any additional automation markers. The Range Tool adjusts the level, creates ramps and scales the automation in either absolute or relative mode — just like that!
  • Adapt to Zoom: A clever capability:
  • New to this point update, Adapt to Zoom helps you to stay in the flow in case you should be constantly zooming in and out of your Cubase project. Zooming out decreases the grid snap level so that the editing level remains effective. Zooming in increases the grid snap level for those surgical procedures at the ground level of your project. Adapt to Zoom will always adjust the grid automatically to your zoom level, allowing you to focus on your work without distractions.
  • Good-bye and hello video engine:
  • A new, modern video engine that bade farewell to the QuickTime technology before it was introduced to Cubase 9.5 supports the most relevant codecs, as well as external video cards. As with every new engine, certain adjustments will still have to be made, and we want to keep you posted on further developments made to the new video engine, so watch this space.
  • Softube Console 1 supports Cubase (Available soon):
  • Sweden and Germany — two countries come together to celebrate the deep integration of the Console 1 from our friends at Softube with Cubase. You can now select tracks and control various track parameters like volume, pan or sends through Softube’s beautiful hardware controller.
  • Sampler Track enhancements:
  • The recently introduced Sampler Track has undergone some changes that will enhance your workflow significantly. Drag any MIDI part in the Sampler Control and start experimenting with the instantly rendered audio file. And experiment you may! You can compare the different settings you make with the convenient A/B mode, safe in the knowledge that its undo/redo capability will always allow you to return to safer ground.
  • Get inspired by Production Presets:
  • Cubase 9.5 comes with Production Presets to inspire you when it’s needed and to help you finish your mix when things need to get done. Stunning new FX chain presets for all kinds of instrument and vocal tracks will lend a fresh twist to all your productions. The brand-new mastering track presets is designed for different genres and productions and can be used on the master bus or group channels to help you get your tracks to a professional level.

  • It is now possible to render tracks in either mono or stereo: For the render options “Dry (Transfer Channel Settings)” and “Channel Settings” the resulting audio tracks keep the formats of their source tracks. A mono track results in a mono track. For the render options “Complete Signal Path” and “Complete Signal Path + Master FX” the resulting audio file format is determined by the output channel of the source track. A mono track, routed to a stereo bus, results in stereo audio files.

  • From the File Menu you can now access “Save New Version” which was previously only available as a key command.
  • In VST Expressions > Expressions Maps > Remote Settings you can define to use either “Key Switches” as before or the new “Program Change Messages” option (Cubase Pro only).
  • When loadings projects in Cubase the application will prevent the ASIO port setup contained in the project file to override the ports currently in use for the Control Room, External Instruments and External FX. New in Cubase 7.5.20 (Apr 9, 2014)

  • IMPROVEMENTS:
  • New Preference: Record-Enable allows MIDI Thru:
  • This new preference can be found in Preferences > Record > MIDI and is enabled by default. Disabling it gives you the option to monitor MIDI tracks just like audio tracks: Record- enabled MIDI/instrument tracks “thru” MIDI data only if the Monitor button is enabled.
  • This helps eliminating doubled notes with record-enabled MIDI tracks. This preference should be disabled when recording MIDI data (e.g. with a MIDI drum set) on a track which should be played back with a VST instrument but is monitored via external MIDI sound generator while recording.
  • Please be aware that this preference is described incorrectly in the current “New Feature” PDF as “Deactivate MIDI Thru for Record Enable” and will be corrected as soon as possible.
  • TrackVersions: Delete Inactive TrackVersions:
  • There are two new commands in the TrackVersions menu to clean up a project of inactive TrackVersions. They remove all TrackVersions, which are not active or not in use in the current project. The “Delete inactive versions of selected tracks” command deletes TrackVersions of all selected tracks, while “Delete inactive versions of all tracks” deletes TrackVersions from the whole project without the need to select tracks first.
  • Control Room Improvements:
  • Monitor states are now saved and recalled per project instead of being stored globally.
  • A new preference controls the Talkback behavior in Playback/Record mode (Preferences > VST > ControlRoom > “Auto Disable Talkback Mode”).
  • Graphical layout and various elements have been re- structured for better accessibility, and the main Control Room section can now be displayed together with the metering section.
  • Control Room and Headphone volume now feature bigger knobs.
  • A CTRL/CMD click on Control Room Level sets it to the Reference Level (instead of 0 dB).
  • Channel/track visibility: Key command for “Update configurations”:
  • A key command is now assignable to “Update visibility configuration” in the key command window under Channel/Track Visibility.
  • Steinberg Hub: Remove recent projects from list:
  • In the Recent tab of the Steinberg Hub’s Project Assistant, opening the context menu of an entry now offers a “Remove from list” function.
  • Project window toolbar: Additional buttons:
  • A global “Listen” and “Suspend Automation” on/off button has been added as well as a “Automation Follow Events” on/off button.

  • Improved Make Chords function:
  • The Make Chords function (Project > Make Chords) now offers two new options: If “Detect Arpeggios” is enabled, there is a great improvement in how arpeggiated notes are interpretedas Chords. Additionally, you can enable the “Interpret Sustain Pedal” option which takes care of finding Chords by notes played within an opened Sustain Pedal phase.
  • Text Input for Chords:
  • It is now possible to create chord events by entering text when using the Chord Editor. Using the tab key you can create a row of chords events in quick succession, which is ideal if you input chords from a lead sheet.

"Lyrics" (SMF 5, "Karaoke") will be displayed in italic, while "Text" (SMF 1) will be displayed in bold. "Text", that is imported from a MIDI file and has been SMF-Karaoke before, will be exported as SMF-Karaoke when exporting that project to a MIDI file again.
  • Audio improvements:
  • ASIO Driver Setup wizard:

This helps to avoid the situation "Cubase is playing back, but I can't hear anything".

New in Cubase 6.0.2 (May 4, 2011)

  • This version contains improvements and corrections for the following issues and includes all improvements and corrections from the previous 6.0.1 pre-release version.
  • The following improvements have been added to this version:
  • Import and Export of MP3 files is available for Cubase 64-bit on Mac OS X.
  • To make the difference between channel types in the mixer more obvious, the fader cap color of audio tracks has been changed to white and for group channels to blue.

New in Cubase 6.0.1 (Mar 30, 2011)

  • Fader Cap Color Intensity: To better distinguish between track types, the fader caps in the Mixer can now be colored with distinct colors for different tracks. The intensity of coloring can be freely adjusted in File > Preferences > Appearance > General > Fader Cap Color Intensity. The default intensity is set to zero (white fader caps).
  • Drag Opacity: As a replacement for transparent events like in Cubase 5, a new behavior has been implemented: when dragging Events or Parts in the Project window, dragged objects reduce their background color opacity as long as the object is moved with a pressed mouse button.
  • This reveals the grid lines of the Project window underneath the content of the dragged object and allows you to align the peak of a waveform exactly with a specific line of the grid. It can be also used to align the content of one object exactly with the content of another one.
  • As a consequence, it is now general behavior that dragged Events (or Parts) no longer leave their image at their original position in the Project window. However, while dragging an object, press the [ALT] modifier key (which is used for copy) to display the object at its original position from where it was dragged. The Drag Opacity can be adjusted freely in File > Preferences > Event Display > Drag Opacity from full to zero opacity. The default setting is a medium value.
  • HALion Sonic SE context menu: The HALion Sonic SE context menu opened at the HSSE Quick Controls section has been extended with the ability to assign controls to Cubase Quick Control slots and to show corresponding Automation Lanes (just like it is with the other VST 3 plug-ins included with Cubase 6).
  • HALion Sonic SE Preset Browser: The default setup of the attributes now contains "Library Name" as default when using the Filter pane in the Preset Browser. This makes it easier to filter the preset list
  • down to the content of specific content sets, for example, VST Sound Instrument Sets.
  • OMF Import / Export: This feature is now available for Cubase 6 64-bit on Mac OS X.
