Clan Lord Changelog

What's new in Clan Lord 1223

May 6, 2021
  • All changes to this update are secret. (But real.)

New in Clan Lord 1219 (Apr 8, 2021)

  • All changes to this update are secret. Or maybe not that secret. Or maybe not that serious.

New in Clan Lord 1214 (Mar 31, 2021)

  • Assorted fixes and tweaks to new monsters and areas.

New in Clan Lord 1210 (Mar 31, 2021)

  • You’ll need to explore to discover changes for this chaos storm.

New in Clan Lord 1206 (Mar 31, 2021)

  • When asked what was new this update, the creators smirked knowingly, yet spoke not a word. So... your guess is as good as mine?
  • The virtual machine that hosts the Clan Lord game server froze, unexpectedly & inexplicably, on 19 Dec., which made the game inaccessible for about 90 minutes. Sorry about that! We’re awarding some free ranks to everyone as consolation.

New in Clan Lord 1201 (Mar 31, 2021)

  • Season’s Beatings!
  • Like poorly wrapped Bawkmas gifts, all changes to this update are secret.

New in Clan Lord 1197 (Mar 31, 2021)

  • All changes this update are either secret or too obvious to mention here. (But not both.)

New in Clan Lord 1188 (Sep 6, 2020)

  • No significant changes this update, but the changes that were changed are significant.
  • For reasons that remain unexplained, in mid-month our network-facing gerbils got moved to a new cage, which they found to be distinctly cramped, noisy, noisome, and altogether an uncongenial place to live. Several days of unpleasantness and fog ensued, until we could move them back into nicer digs. We apologize for the deterioration of service; we’re awarding some free ranks to everyone to make up for it.

New in Clan Lord 1184 (Sep 6, 2020)

  • Everything this update is secret. Shhh!

New in Clan Lord 1179 (Sep 6, 2020)

  • Increase darkite damage to more exactly match darkus without balance components.
  • Tweaked some monsters (general summary of changes: more XP, sometimes more health)
  • Tweaks to pets:
  • The “come” command now makes the pet follow until they receive another command.
  • Slightly decreased pet slaughter rates.
  • You can now /pull /critter to pull a pet (size of pets also increased to make pulling more reliable)

New in Clan Lord 1175 (Sep 6, 2020)

  • Major updates and changes to healer pets. Some changes in pet management and collecting, and some bug fixes and quality of life improvements.
  • This is a major overhaul in how things worked behind the scenes. We tested as well as we could, but please report any bugs or issues.
  • Rescuing a pet will no longer replace your “secondary” pet. You can rescue as many pets as you want now, without fear of overwriting pets.
  • There were major changes to allow for this behavior; you’ll need to explore and experiment to figure it out.
  • The overall summary is that there are still limits on the number of pets you can have at once; and now it’s much more explicit when you choose to “tame” a pet: it’s no longer automatically done when you heal the pet. Instead, healing a pet adds it to your “collection” of possible pets.
  • This collection is limitless, although you can’t have duplicates.
  • It should now be nearly impossible to accidentally replace your pets.
  • Limit on number of simultaneous pets can now be increased beyond 2. (But you’ve got to earn it!)
  • Fixed bug which was preventing most rescuable pets from showing up in the world.
  • Added a bunch of new pets.
  • Pets can now get even stronger than before.
  • Chests on Gho-wei were inadvertently awarding total coin payout to everyone, instead of splitting it amongst nearby players. We've kept the non-splitting behavior, but lowered the payout to account for it.
  • Do you believe in magic? If you search for it, then it may lead you somewhere.

New in Clan Lord 1171 (Sep 6, 2020)

  • We hope that everyone continues to remain safe and healthy during the new normal.
  • It’s so very good to see old faces again. And by “faces” we mean “pixels”. Welcome back to Puddleby, returning players!
  • Fixed bug where monsters that spawned “friends” on spawn would spawn additional “friends” when they were befriended and the befriend ended. ’Nuff said-ed?
  • Extended the amount of ranks the “newbie” experience booster will boost to. It previously boosted up to 2000 ranks; it now boosts to 3000. This also tweaks the amount of boost at different ranks (for example, it used to switch from a 9x bonus to a 8x bonus at 200 ranks; it now does this at 400 ranks). Any suggestions for further improvements to the booster, or newbie experience in general, are very welcome.
  • Fix a bug affecting certain capped skills after untraining. For some trainers, it would not let you get back up to the cap after untraining due to fractional rank gain (for example, if you had 9.3, and the cap was 10, it wouldn’t let you train even once, because that would go to 10.3). Now in this case it will let you train just up to the cap (so from 9.3 to 10, for example).
  • Reduce spirit cost of some mystic abilities.
  • Champion earth mineral bug fix:
  • Previous behavior: When equipping a pauldron and a left-hand earth mineral, it would apply the full bonus for each item, instead of just the pauldron. So for example, with an atkite pauldron and left-hand atkite equipped, it would give 2x atkite instead of 1x. Or one atkite pauldron and one balthite would give 1x atkite and 1x balthite.
  • Why this is a problem: 2x balthite bonus gives significantly more ranks than 1x balthus. (And same for dethite). This makes channel master better, by a very large percentage, than those base trainers. (And similar but lesser bonus for a mix of balthite/dethite and atkite/darkite)
  • New behavior: Changed behavior when both ‘ites are equipped to give 1/2 full bonus of each ’ite. So for example, with an atkite pauldron and left-hand atkite equipped, it would give 1x atkite. Or one atkite pauldron and one balthite left-hand item would give .5 atkite and .5 balthite. When boosting, it will apply the pauldron full boost, and continue to apply the left hand ‘ite unboosted effect, so the last example, while boosted, will apply 1.5x atkite and .5 balthite.
  • Additionally: Since this bug has been around for a very long time (since pauldrons were introduced), and since people have likely trained to optimize for it, we’ve also tweaked the amount of attack, balance, etc. that ’ites give to be more generous. In particular:
  • Atkite: Used to give a bit more than half of what a “pure accuracy” (Atkus without balance components) trainer would give. It now gives exactly as much as a pure accuracy trainer would give.
  • Balthite: Used to give a little bit less balance than what Balthus gave. Now gives exactly what Balthus gives.
  • Dethite: Used to give a little bit less defense than what Dethus gave. Now gives exactly what Dethus gives.
  • Darkite: Used to give a bit more than half of what a “pure damage” (Darkus without balance components) trainer would give. Now gives exactly what a “pure damage” Darkus would give.
  • The result: This is a significant nerf for those using double pauldron and ‘ites with balthite and dethite. It’s closer to neutral (but still a nerf) for those using it for double atkite/darkite. For those not using double ‘ites, this is a buff all around (a significant one for accuracy/damage, minor for balance/defense). This makes channel master still a very good trainer, better in most cases than training straight balance/defense/accuracy/damage, but not to the degree it was before the change. The hope is that even if people have adjusted their training to channel master vs. base trainers, that investment is still a very good investment (if not, please let us know what you’d have rather trained; the intent is not to “punish” anyone, given this bug has been around for so long).
  • Development continues behind the scenes on new areas.
  • One more secret change; we can’t spoil everything.

New in Clan Lord 1166 (Apr 6, 2020)

New in Clan Lord 1136 (Sep 5, 2019)

  • Words are like spices. Too many is worse than too few. — Joan Aiken (1924–2004)
  • We expect that the next major version of macOS, Catalina (10.15), will be released in the next few weeks. The current Clan Lord client will not work with that system, and we don’t have any plans to produce a new, compatible client.
  • Those of you who wish to continue playing the game have a few options — none of which, regrettably, are ideal:
  • Refrain from upgrading; stick with macOS 10.14 or below.
  • Run one of those older system versions within a virtual machine or emulator
  • Switch to the Windows client, either in a VM or on real hardware (although that client has its own geriatric issues as well)
  • Other:
  • Made a change that may help prevent certain overzealous modem/routers from prematurely closing communications between client and server.

New in Clan Lord 1132 (Aug 8, 2019)

  • At some point in life the world’s beauty becomes enough. You don’t need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough. — Toni Morrison (1931–2019)

New in Clan Lord 1118 (May 2, 2019)

  • For when a child is born the mother also is born again. — Gilbert Parker (1862–1932)
  • Reminder: starting this update, we’re shifting to a slightly more leisurely release schedule, with updates appearing on the first Wednesday of each (RL) month. Thus today’s v1118 will be followed by v1123 on June 5th, v1127 on July 3rd, v1132 on August 7th, and so forth.

New in Clan Lord 1115 (Apr 11, 2019)

  • The GMs are outside enjoying the spring weather (no significant updates this time around).
  • As noted above, the v1118 update is scheduled for May 1st. Thereafter, though, we plan to shift to a slightly slower release cadence: specifically, on the first Wednesday of each (RL) month. Thus v1118 would be followed by v1123 on June 5th, v1127 on July 3rd, and so forth.

New in Clan Lord 1112 (Mar 22, 2019)

  • Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor. — Sholem Aleichem (1859–1916)

  • Certain containers have been expanded, both in capacity and in variety.

New in Clan Lord 1103 (Mar 1, 2019)

  • We hope that everyone had fun this past update; thanks for your continued support for Clan Lord!

New in Clan Lord 1100 (Mar 1, 2019)

  • On 20 December, the host that runs our server crashed without warning, for reasons that our provider has not yet deigned to explain. Needless to say, this caused a bit of a — shall we say — service interruption. Adding injury to insult, the mechanism that’s supposed to restart our server, automatically, after the host reboots itself, didn’t. We’re investigating alternate mechanisms.
  • In the meantime, please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

New in Clan Lord 1097 (Mar 1, 2019)

  • Happy Bawkmas!
  • Merry Skristmas!
  • Happy Thoomas!
  • Season’s Beatings!

  • Certain butterflies have undergone a metamorphosis.

New in Clan Lord 1079 (Aug 2, 2018)

  • Clan Lord has a new account portal! You will find it here: https://deltatao.com/portal/
  • In addition to purchasing more characters, you may also donate money to keep the server gerbils fed and happy.
  • The account portal was created and donated by an anonymous group of players. Our deepest and humblest thanks to these members of the Clan Lord community for their generous contribution.

New in Clan Lord 1076 (Jul 16, 2018)

  • Repaired some stairs in an old keep.

New in Clan Lord 1073 (Jun 22, 2018)

  • The tell blade has been re-released.
  • Boostus is back!
  • Several bloodmage bug fixes, and some buffs.

New in Clan Lord 1067 (May 10, 2018)

  • Fixed a bug in which Starflower seedlings would block/trap players with full inventories.

New in Clan Lord 1064 (Apr 19, 2018)

  • Users of macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or above will receive a harmless, one-time warning that the client is “not optimized for your Mac”. (Apple’s support site has more about this warning.) This is a consequence of the fact that our client is stuck in a technological time warp, being generally about 10–12 years behind the state of the art.
  • The warning is meant to appear only once for any given 32-bit application, so as not to unduly annoy you. Unfortunately, however, each revision of our client (v1064, 1067, ...) is considered distinct from all others, which means that you should prepare yourselves to see this warning once every three weeks.

New in Clan Lord 1061 (Mar 29, 2018)

  • No significant changes in the game.
  • The Mac client now stores your account and character passwords (if so requested) in the Keychain, rather than in its own preferences file.
  • The machine that hosts our virtual server (which in turn hosts the Clan Lord game server) crashed briefly, without warning or explanation, on March 21st. I blame the equinox.

New in Clan Lord 1058 (Mar 12, 2018)

  • Only internal reorganizations.

New in Clan Lord 1055 (Feb 26, 2018)

  • Internal reorganizations.

New in Clan Lord 1021 (Jun 23, 2017)

  • Slow news day

New in Clan Lord 1018 (Jun 5, 2017)

  • Happy 15th anniversary to ThoomCare.com

New in Clan Lord 1015 (May 11, 2017)

  • No notable game news to report.
  • The Account Portal remains out of commission. There’s been some progress on reviving it, both stronger and better — but nothing visible yet. Apologies for the inconvenience.

New in Clan Lord 1012 (Apr 20, 2017)

  • The Account Portal is still out of commission due to unforeseen software changes at the hosting provider. We’re trying to get it back online but we can’t yet say how long that will take. Apologies for the inconvenience.

New in Clan Lord 1006 (Mar 9, 2017)

  • We apologize, again, for the mishap that afflicted the v1000-to-v1003 update. At long last we’re able to award the lion’s share of the ranks that we’d planned to give out as compensation for the lost time.

New in Clan Lord 1003 (Feb 16, 2017)

  • Housing mannequins now correctly display shifting tie-dyed cloaks and shirts.
  • We had some reports of “choppy” sound playback in the v1000 Mac client. With any luck, v1003 fixes that.

New in Clan Lord 996 (Dec 29, 2016)

  • Some Mac client issues with text styles, “Record Movie”, and “Select All” are now resolved.

New in Clan Lord 993 (Dec 8, 2016)

  • More (minor) modernizations to the Mac client. Once again we hope that the number of improvements exceeds the number of new bugs.
  • That client now requires Mac OS X 10.5 or newer.

New in Clan Lord 990.1 (Nov 21, 2016)

  • As it turns out, the v990 Mac client has its own problems with dialog boxes. Specifically, if you attempt to create a new character from the Character Manager, it will crash. If this affects you, try the v990.1 client instead.

New in Clan Lord 990 (Nov 17, 2016)

  • We hope that the Mac client’s erstwhile difficulty with text styles has been solved.
  • Likewise, its main Preferences dialog should now actually, uh, modify your preferences. Whoops.
  • As we warned you three years ago (!), v990 will be the last version of the client to support Mac OS 10.4 “Tiger”. If this affects you, please consider upgrading to a version of the OS that’s less than 10 years old. (We’re rather fond of 10.6 “Snow Leopard” ourselves...)
  • Conversely, if you’re using OS 10.12 “Sierra” and have been experiencing weird permission or quarantine errors — for example if you get an error such as “Unable to open preferences file. (Is your disk locked?)” — then please try replacing your current client application with the one found on this disk image. Also please let us know whether that does (or doesn’t!) solve the problem, as we have not yet fully fathomed its root cause.

New in Clan Lord 987 (Oct 28, 2016)

  • The Mac client is now code-signed, which means that if you had previously needed to “allow apps from anywhere” in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, you can now use the safer and more secure “Mac App Store and identified developers” setting. (For Mac OS 10.7 through 10.11)
  • Some of that client’s dialog boxes received cosmetic touchups. If you find any that don’t seem to be working as well as last version, please /BUG them.

New in Clan Lord 978 (Aug 26, 2016)

  • Still no significant changes this update.

New in Clan Lord 957 (Mar 31, 2016)

  • No changes worth talking about.

New in Clan Lord 945 (Jan 7, 2016)

  • Happy New Year!

New in Clan Lord 942 (Dec 18, 2015)

  • Happy Bawkmas!
  • Happy Skristmas!
  • Happy Thoomas!
  • Season's Beatings!

New in Clan Lord 924 (Aug 13, 2015)

  • No changes were submitted for today’s update.

New in Clan Lord 921 (Jul 23, 2015)

  • All changes this update are confidential.

New in Clan Lord 918 (Jul 2, 2015)

  • No changes in this update are public.

New in Clan Lord 915 (Jun 12, 2015)

  • Rare items in the mountains are twice as common! (But still crazy rare.)
  • More chests.
  • Noth Island is rainier.

New in Clan Lord 912 (May 21, 2015)

  • Certain very rare items from the mountains are now slightly less rare.

New in Clan Lord 909 (Apr 30, 2015)

  • Changes are occurring, albeit in a behind-the-scenes (dressing) room.

New in Clan Lord 906 (Apr 10, 2015)

  • Untrainus has been significantly redone. Among the improvements:
  • Extensive untraining can no longer leave you “stranded” in an inappropriately high circle.
  • Untraining out of a subclass, back to a plain fighter (or mystic, or healer), should work better now.
  • It is now possible to untrain essentially all the way back to zero.
  • Shadowmutt took voice lessons. (Well, one lesson anyway...)
  • Assorted other smaller bugs fixed.

New in Clan Lord 903 (Mar 19, 2015)

  • Deadlocked GMs fail to override “content sequester”; no new gear/quests/areas/monsters/stuff this update.

New in Clan Lord 900 (Feb 26, 2015)

  • New gear
  • New quests
  • New ways to look absolutely fabulous!

New in Clan Lord 894 (Jan 15, 2015)

  • Good news: no news.

New in Clan Lord 891 (Dec 27, 2014)

  • Some molehills were made into mountains.
  • Have a holly, jolly Bawkmas!

New in Clan Lord 888 (Dec 4, 2014)

  • “Silly Saturday” was a big success. Not least: no more world freezes.

New in Clan Lord 885 (Nov 13, 2014)

  • There were a surprisingly large number of internal changes, honest. But none that I’m allowed to tell you about.

New in Clan Lord 882 (Oct 23, 2014)

  • Nearly 100 new animals added to the coliseum whitelist.
  • It’s just possible that we might have solved the problem which was causing “Error receiving data from server” disconnections for players using the Windows client. No promises, though.

New in Clan Lord 879 (Oct 2, 2014)

  • Numerous pigeon-toed animals have learned to manage pretty well walking around on the ground.

New in Clan Lord 870 (Jul 30, 2014)

  • The Clan Lord server’s address has changed (or soon will), from server.clanlord.com to server.deltatao.com. We don’t yet know if this is a permanent relocation, or just a temporary change of scenery. For more info on this issue, please consult this Sentinel post.
  • The v870 Mac client will automatically make the change for you; you don’t have to do anything.
  • However if you’re still using the v867 Mac client — e.g. before it’s had a chance to auto-update itself to v870 — and if the “clanlord.com” address has already stopped working, so that you get error messages along the lines of “Failed to find server at ‘server.clanlord.com’", then you’ll need to perform a one-time repair, as follows:
  • Select the Clan Lord > Preferences... menu command.
  • Click the Setup Proxy... button.
  • Turn on the “Use a Proxy Server” checkbox.
  • In the Proxy Address field, enter this text:
  • server.deltatao.com:5010
  • Click OK to exit the Proxy Server dialog.
  • Click OK again, to exit the Preferences dialog.
  • Join the game, as normal.
  • Your v867 client will then update itself to v870. You won’t need to revert the “Use a Proxy Server” setting, since the new client recognizes the “deltatao.com” address as the standard one.
  • We’re a little bit uncertain about how the Windows client will fare. Hopefully it should work seamlessly; but if you have trouble connecting, go to Options > Settings... > Advanced, and turn on the “Use server[:port]” checkbox. Enter server.deltatao.com into the associated field.
  • From the “Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?” Department: work continues on at least one project, but that’s all I’m allowed to say about that.

New in Clan Lord 867 (Jul 10, 2014)

  • Nothing gives us courage more readily than the desire to avoid looking like a damn fool.

New in Clan Lord 864 (Jun 20, 2014)

  • No news to report.

New in Clan Lord 861 (May 29, 2014)

  • Yet another loophole in the fabric of reality has been mended; those incorrigible spriggins were taking unfair advantage of it. (Never fear; we’ve left them plenty of loopholes to take fair advantage of.)

New in Clan Lord 858 (May 8, 2014)

  • Last version’s spring cleaning continues. Overall we hope to have removed more old bugs than we introduced new ones. We’re confident you’ll let us know if we didn’t.
  • In particular, some mystics got their boost back. (Not literally true; but they’ll know what I mean.)
  • Being the comparatively family-friendly game that it is, Clan Lord tends to eschew four-letter words. But don’t fret; we’ve added a whole lot o’ five-letter words instead!
  • Mac Client reminder: for a few hours after the v855 Storm, three weeks ago, there was a flaw in the Mac client which caused its auto-update mechanism to fail at the very last step. A repaired v855 client was posted as soon as we discovered the trouble. But there’s a minuscule chance that some of you might still be using the bad one. If so, the symptom will be that when your client tries to update itself to v858, it will simply terminate after the download, but the new v858 client won't automatically start running. The cure is easy: look in the “Downloads” folder beside your current client. You’ll find a shiny new v858 client waiting there, all ready to go. Just drag that one out of “Downloads” into the enclosing folder, replacing the v855 client, and you should be all set. The next update will then proceed smoothly. (The discussion of this issue on the Sentinel may also be helpful to you.)

New in Clan Lord 855 (Apr 17, 2014)

  • We did a pretty fair-sized spring cleaning among the scripts: the server now wastes appreciably less memory. In theory, you won’t notice any differences. But in practice, there’s always a chance that we dotted a “t” where we should have crossed an “i”; so if you spot anything misbehaving egregiously, please do /BUG it. (Don’t go cross-eyed, or dot-T!)

New in Clan Lord 852 (Mar 27, 2014)

  • The server was down for several hours on March 18th. The gerbils are claiming that they were all just plumb tuckered out, after too much green beer the day before. But that’s just silly rodent braggadocio: the much more prosaic real reason involved a credit-card renewal glitch, a stale email address, and a ridiculously forgettable “security question”. (Although come to think of it, green beer might conceivably have played a role somewhere in there too...)
  • Anyway, whichever version you choose to believe, we apologize for the outage. We’ve awarded everyone three free ranks in grateful recognition of your patience and forbearance.
  • Healer pets got a B-A-T-H (shh!), including an overdue ear-cleaning. They should now be much more obedient to spoken commands. (In fact, this happened during the aforementioned outage, while we had nothing better to do; and thus might count as a mildly silver-tinged lining thereof.)
  • Some players had reported problems with bard music volume in the v849 Mac client. We can’t reproduce the issue here, but we did some prospective work on that code anyway. Please let us know if things have (or have not!) improved for you.

New in Clan Lord 849 (Mar 7, 2014)

  • Last time around, we trained numerous gerbils — at great expense — to refit many doors in and around Puddleby. This only served to prove that gerbils make lousy carpenters. So now we’ve trained numerous hamsters — at correspondingly greater expense — to repair the repairs of the gerbils. (That had better be the end of it, because the bids we got from the stoats were frankly extortionate.)

New in Clan Lord 846 (Feb 13, 2014)

  • We fixed a bunch of fairly minor bugs. With any luck, we also didn’t introduce any new ones!
  • In particular, a glitch had improperly prevented many folks from attempting Rakhee’s reedcat-hunting challenge. That challenge (and its rewards) have now been re-opened to everyone — even those who had already completed it may try again.
  • The date-conversion NPCs in the Fairgrounds have had their clocks cleaned, so to speak. The year 2014 is now within the range of their calendars (as indeed are years 2015–2037).

New in Clan Lord 843 (Jan 23, 2014)

  • Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. — Dr. Martin Luther King (1929–1968)
  • Happy New Year!
  • No changes this version are public.

New in Clan Lord 840 (Jan 3, 2014)

  • All changes this version are secret.

New in Clan Lord 837.1 (Dec 13, 2013)

  • Fixed a bug which made the “Label” submenu of the “Command” menu inoperable.

New in Clan Lord 837 (Dec 12, 2013)

  • No reportable news to report.
  • We are considering dropping support for Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger” in the Mac client, because it’s getting ever harder to maintain the elderly development systems required to build that version. Also on the horizon — though not yet imminent — is the day when we have to stop building for PowerPC-based machines. We have no set schedule for these changes: our in-house mystics are not so good at that kind of detailed prognostication. But we did want to provide fair warning.

New in Clan Lord 828 (Oct 10, 2013)

  • Nothing notably new in the world this update.
  • ... however, reliable sources tell me that behind-the-scenes work is continuing on several projects. Courage!
  • Since v825, we’ve been gradually adding a bunch of really old cases to the Puddleby Court archives. Alas, the pesky backup gerbils haven’t coughed up the official transcripts from PY’540–573 yet. (Is it true that they were trained by Storoenna?)
  • The prospect of rodentiary nonfeasance — aka “Gerbil Gridlock” — couldn’t deter us from adding a crude and preliminary Election Results Tracker, as a complement to the Court archive.

New in Clan Lord 825 (Sep 19, 2013)

  • Work continues on several projects.
  • The Puddleby Court archives have a new, official home. There you will find complete transcripts going back to Year 574, although records from earlier years are currently patchy at best. We’ll be adding more historical cases as they turn up.

New in Clan Lord 822 (Aug 29, 2013)

New in Clan Lord 807 (May 16, 2013)

  • A couple of touch-ups to a couple of areas.
  • The splash screen has a lot of SPLASH! (But possibly a paucity of puddles.) Thanks to everyone for participating in a fun event.
  • A regrettable bug in the Mac client’s movie code, dating back to v795, has been fixed. It caused player, monster, and NPC nametags to be mangled. Unfortunately, any movies recorded by the erroneous clients — namely, Mac v795 through v804 — were also affected by this bug, and are (technically) internally corrupt. The v807 and later Mac clients do know how to work around this corruption, and will therefore play back both “broken” and “correct” movies equally well. But if you try to play a “broken” movie on a Windows client, the damage will reveal itself. Sorry about that.

New in Clan Lord 780.1 (Nov 14, 2012)

  • It turns out that the v780 Mac client has a problem that prevents it from working on Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.4 or 10.5. That’s the only affected configuration; the client does work fine with more recent OS versions (10.6 and later), as well as with PPC machines.

  • No crashes (of our own making) in 513 days and counting. The record is 723 days. However...
  • For reasons of hygiene, our hosting provider needed to move all the gerbils into nice new clean cages — not just ours. Some of the less-well-behaved gerbils (again, not ours) found the dislocation upsetting, and made their displeasure known, as gerbils will.
  • Our gerbils, politely covering their ears and noses, were thereby prevented from pedalling as vigorously as they normally do, which is why there’s been unusually bad lag for the past couple of weeks.
  • On the 21th, conditions got so dire in one particular rack of cages that all its occupants, guilty and innocent alike, had urgently to be hosed off and (re-) rehoused afresh. To the hapless victims (like us) this had the appearance of a crash, even though it wasn’t one really.
  • Fortunately that marked the episode’s nadir; we were back online within minutes after the last gerbil finished towelling off. And since then, the rabble-rousers seem to be growing accustomed to their new burrows, so harmony is gradually returning to the power plant.
  • During these excitements, we happened to notice, quite incidentally, that a few of our gerbils had become slightly too fat and complacent in their comfortable previous housing. So we’ve put them onto a healthful slimming diet.

  • No crashes in 10 days and counting. There was a single (as yet unexplained) server crash on 25 November, which had the side effect of revealing a hitherto-unknown flaw in our server monitor tools. That flaw, in turn, triggered a number of unnecessary and annoying server restarts, every ten minutes or so, during the evening of the 25th — until a smart GM deduced what was happening and assassinated the misbehaving monitor. The monitor tool has been repaired, and diagnostics have been installed to try to discover what caused the original crash.
