Bartender Changelog

What's new in Bartender 5.0.48

Dec 18, 2023
  • New Features:
  • Image comparison triggers (formally show for update image comparisons) are back:
  • With macOS 14.1 Apple implemented changes I requested so I could recreate this feature without macOS showing the screen capture purple menu bar item.
  • Any previous image comparison show for updates from Bartender 4 should automatically be converted into triggers for you.
  • Re-added the ability to leave menu bar items to the right of the Bartender menu bar item:
  • This feature will keep any items to the right of the Bartender menu bar item always visible, even when Bartender swaps out your shown items for your hidden ones.
  • Re-added the ability to always or never swap out shown items for hidden items:
  • This was previously done automatically, only when there wasn't enough room to show your items unless swapped, now you can choose to keep it automatically, or never do this, or always do it.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Image comparison triggers firing for certain color changes:
  • There was a bug in Bartender, that would mean icons that just changed colors a certain amount would not fire the image trigger condition. This has been fixed.
  • Image comparison triggers not getting checked when icon had transparent center:
  • There was a bug in Bartender, that would stop it checking icons with transparent centers sometimes (it thought they were blank icons). This has been fixed.
  • Proton VPN popup showing when it shouldn't:
  • Looking at the opensource code for Proton VPN I saw they already had a specific compatibility fix for Bartender, this did not work with Bartender 5, I have changed Bartender 5 so this compatibility fix can work again. Big thanks to the Proton Devs.
  • Menu bar style not applying correctly on some none english language systems:
  • Due to name changes some none english language systems the wallpaper would not get drawn around rounded menu bar styles, this has been fixed.
  • Compatibility with Bitwarden app:
  • I have found a workaround to prevent Bitwarden showing its UI when its menu bar item is moved.
  • Typos and spellings:
  • Thanks to the users reporting these. They have been fixed.
  • Smaller bug fixes and improvements:
  • As stated, fixed small issues I found as I worked through the other bug fixes.

  • I have updated this feature to work with changes in macOS Sonoma so have re-added this feature.
  • Compatibility with Bitwarden app:
  • I have found a workaround to prevent BitWarden showing its UI when its menu bar item is moved.
  • Compatibility with Sip app:
  • I have found a workaround to prevent Sip showing its UI when its menu bar item is moved.
  • Menu Bar Style adjustment:
  • When you have menu bar style setup with separate sides and below menu bar rounding, it gives a black background between the two sides of the menu bar (great for hiding the notch). In previous versions this would leave a 1px strip of the desktop wallpaper visible above an windows positioned just below the menu bar, this has been fixed.
  • Menu Bar Style showing above Firefox and VPN fullscreen windows:
  • Firefox and VPN can both use none native UI for there fullscreen, this was not detected by Bartender, so the menu bar style was applied above the fullscreen window. This has been fixed.
  • Typos and spellings:
  • Thanks to the users reporting these, they have been fixed.
  • Smaller bug fixes and improvements:
  • As stated, fixed small issues I found as I worked through the other bug fixes.

New in Bartender 5.0.6 (Sep 21, 2023)

  • Bug Fixes:
  • Added back option to use Bartender Bar:
  • In macOS Sonoma getting images of menu bar items that are offscreen causes the purple "Bartender is Capturing your screen" menu bar item to show, as such this happens when the Bartender Bar shows your menu bar items. So until I could come up with a solution I had disabled the Bartender Bar. But it seems many of you REALLY like the Bartender Bar so I have re-enabled the option to use it, but it is turned off by default.
  • Bartender always hiding items before showing others on screens with notch:
  • There was an issue with the logic for deciding if Bartender needs to hide currently shown items before showing others to create enough room for them, the bug was only screens with a notch, that caused Bartender to always think it needed to create more room, this has been fixed.

  • Bartender 4 is not optimised for macOS Sonoma. If you do not want to upgrade to Bartender 5 and wish to continue using Bartender 4 you might want to avoid installing macOS Sonoma.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Show for update image comparison trigger false positive:
  • When changing between light and dark menu bar some menu bar items icons/emoji would have their opacity changed, this could be enough for the image comparison to trigger a change, this is now taken into account.
  • Mouse cursor not changing after changing spaces over a text field:
  • When changing spaces with the mouse cursor sitting over a text field, the cursor would not change from the default pointer to the caret cursor. This has been fixed.

  • macOS Ventura FaceTime Handoff menu bar item not accounted for:
  • The macOS FaceTime Handoff menu bar item is another special menu bar item that macOS forces to show (cannot be hidden) Bartender did not take this into account, it does now.
  • Show for Updates table, truncated text:
  • The description of SHow For Updates should now truncate if the Preferences window is made wider.
  • Bartender Bar Color:

  • It needs this permission so that it can get information about your menu bar items, and capture images of the menu bar and menu bar items, it does this for 4 reasons, to know which menu items you have, to make “show for updates” work, to display the menu items in preferences, and to create a smooth transition when switching states.
  • Bartender does not record your screen, and does not save or transmit these images.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Fix for not adding to Screen Recording Permissions in System Preferences:
  • If the user clicked to open system preferences, Bartender may not be listed in Screen Recording, this has been fixed.
  • Rare crash fix:
  • We receive occasional crash reports of a crash we have not seen here, we believe this build fixes the crash.
  • Crashing when macOS does not apply Accessibility Permission Correctly:
  • There is a bug in macOS that can cause Accessibility permissions to fail for an app, even though it has been setup correctly and is reported as such. Bartender now tries to detect this and help the user fix the issue by toggling the permission.
  • Item position being lost:
  • There is a another bug in macOS that can cause menu items to appear overlapped and loose their order, Bartender has always tried to detect this and recover the positioning (but not the order), some users are experiencing the order of their items being lost, Changes have been made to try and prevent this.
  • UI layout issues on Permissions Screens:
  • The permissions screens had layout issues in macOS version older than 10.15, this has been fixed.
  • Hiding left menu not activating:
  • Some users have experienced issues with the left menu not being hidden when needed, work has been done to fix this.
  • Some UI elements not correct colour in dark mode:
  • These should now all work correctly in Dark mode.
  • Apps without Display Name would be not be displayed correctly:
  • Apps that do not have a display name could end up without a name in Bartender Preferences, this has now been fixed.

New in Bartender 3.0.64 (Apr 19, 2019)

  • New Features / Improvements:
  • Ability to show the menu bar via hotkey when hidden:
  • If you have autohide menu bar set in macOS or are in a fullscreen app, Bartender can now display the menu bar when activated via hotkey.
  • Added support for Little Snitch Internet Access Policy:
  • Little Snitch now allows applications to declare the connections they make and why, giving users better insight into what an app is doing. Bartender now supports this.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Bartender would autohide if an iStat Menus menu item was activated then dismissed:
  • We now take this into account and Bartender should not autohide when a iStat Menus items popup is dismissed.
  • If autohide menu bar is enabled in macOS the menu bar would hide when Bartender was clicked:
  • In macOS Mojave with autohide menu bar enabled there is a bug that will hide the menu bar when a menu items position is changed, this would cause the menu bar to hide when a user clicked on Bartender to show hidden items. Bartender will now keep the menu bar visible.
  • Spotlight being dismissed when showing for updates:
  • The spotlight window could get dismissed when menu items showed for updates, this has been fixed.
  • macOS not sleeping or screensaver showing:
  • In macOS Mojave the location menu item has changed its behaviour, and will now forget its position whenever it leaves the menu bar. This, along with settings in Bartender to hide the location menu item would cause Bartender to move it every time it showed. If the user ran anything which would show/hide the location menu item regularly this would prevent the screen saver from activating. This has now been fixed.
  • Slow transitions on larger setups:
  • Some users with larger setups (many menu items, multiple screens etc.) could experience slower transitions, this build contains changes to try and improve this.
  • Support for apps with binaries signed with different ID to executable name:
  • Some apps not in a bundle format have a different signing ID to there executable name, this would prevent Bartender being able to control them. This has been fixed.
  • Show All Items being hidden again straight away after showing for first time:
  • Fixed issue with show all items or search being dismissed first time they were shown.
  • Possible Crash Fix:
  • A possible crash and exception have been fixed.
  • Show for updates with multiple screens giving false positives:
  • Due to an odd behaviour by an Apple framework, show for updates could think there was a change when the user has mutiple monitors setup in a specific way, this has been worked around.
  • Transparent side panel in Bartender Preferences:
  • In macOS High Sierra, 10.14.3 and newer the Menu Items side panel in Bartender preferences could show with a very transparent background when using light mode, this has been fixed.
  • Updated UI text:
  • Some of the description text in Preferences has been updated to make it easier for new users.
  • Typo fixes:
  • There was a typo in the previous version, this is fixed.

  • We are aware of this, and currently it appears to me a macOS Mojave Beta issue, we will monitor this and fix when appropriate.
  • Crash reporter showing:
  • Bartender will show the crash reporter if the previous version crashed before launching this version, this is not the current version crashing, just reporting the previous crash.

  • Completely rewritten for modern macOS:
  • Bartender 3 has been completely rewritten from the ground up in Swift using best practices to work with modern macOS, it also paves the way for many new features we have planned.
  • The biggest change is we no longer require a helper to be installed in menu item apps to control them. This means we no longer do anything that SIP (System Integrity Protection) is interested in and can work with any menu bar app including those with increased security (Such as Apple System items).
  • What this does now mean though is that Bartender is no longer able to display the Bartender Bar beneath the menu bar but instead displayed it in the main menu bar removing normally shown items to display the Bartender Bar items.
  • macOS High Sierra Compatibility:
  • Full macOS High Sierra compatibility. We did consider calling it High Bartender but thought better of it.
  • iStat Menus Individual item control:
  • We 💚 iStat Menus and now Bartender 3 can control iStat menus items individually.
  • BUG FIXES:
  • Better compatibility with some app setups:
  • Adding in compatibility for more unusual app setups.
  • Improved reliability on some systems:
  • For some users Bartender has been underperforming/not working correctly. With a lot of help from a user (thank you) to debug/log this, it should now work correctly and performance should be better. We are still working on improving this.
  • UI Fixes and improvements:
  • Small things, such as typo fixes and better explanations. Added remove button for menu item settings.
  • Fix for Airplay Display still moving:
  • Airplay Display could still change position if set to "Always show in menu bar" this has been fixed.
  • Fix for individual item control of Setapp version of iStat Menus:
  • The Setapp version of iStat menus could not be individually controlled, this has been fixed.
  • Fix for crash in previous test build:

  • Google Backup and Sync and other apps without a name in localised languages:
  • Apps that do not have a process name in a localisation would not be controlled by Bartender, this has been fixed.

  • Better Amphetamine compatibility:
  • It was possible for Bartender to not be able to control Amphetamine in some setups, we have worked around this.
  • Search menu hotkey bug:

  • Previous versions of Bartender 3 could not control PIA V77 die to changes to the PIA app, We have now added support for PIA version 77.

  • Could not order menu bar items when Bartender menu bar icon is hidden
  • This has been fixed - Prompt to install helper after each reboot
  • In the previous version the timeout for the helper was too short, and it would request to reinstall after each boot, we have increased the timeout and retry attempts. This has been improved from the previous test build.
  • Right most menu bar gap - Bartender 2 added a gap to the right of the menu bar when Notification Center was hidden, this is to maintain the default gap at the screen edge, a lot of users liked not having this gap, so this is now a preference under Appearance. This setting is now saved correctly.
  • Could not position Notification Center in Bartender Bar - Notification Center could not be moved left/right in the Bartender Bar, this has been fixed.
  • Prompt to install System Component when SIP partially disabled - Bartender would prompt the user to install its system component repeatedly when SIP is partially disabled, but file system access was still restricted, this has been fixed.
  • Exceptions and Crashed - We have fixed a number of exceptions and crashed reported.

  • Show For Updates for System Items - Show for updates now works with system items, no need to say any more, give it a try its great.
  • Show For Updates, Image recognition - Bartender now uses image recognition to detect changes in Menu Bar Items, this prevents false positives, i.e. showing when a update didn't really happen and an app just refreshed its state.
  • Show For Updates, remaining in the Menu Bar until timeout - Previous versions of Bartender would show items in the menu bar from the first update until the timeout, then hide and show again if another update happened. Now an item will show in the Menu Bar from the last update until the specified timeout, so if updates keep happening the item will stay in the menubar.
  • Power Usage - We have improved Bartenders power usage dramatically to help extend battery life for users of Mavericks.
  • Compatibility - We have been making major changes to the control code of Bartender to improve compatibility with the few apps that didnt work well with Bartender, these should see a huge improvement, and all apps should work better with Bartender.
  • Dragging to Bartender - You can now drag items to Bartenders Menu Bar Icon and the default click action will be performed allowing you to drag and drop to apps hidden by Bartender.
  • Fullscreen detection - If you are on Mountain Lion or newer versions of OSX, Bartender will now detect when switching to a fullscreen app and automatically hide the Bartender Bar, it will then reopen it when you switch to a non fullscreen space, works very nicely on Mavericks with fullscreen apps on a separate display.
  • OSX Compatibility Checks - Bartender now checks that it is compatible with the version of OSX you are running and will prompt you to inform us of compatibility issues.
  • New URL Schemas - We have added new url schemas that allow links to directly launch the feedback window, check for updates, and update to test builds. Useful for support.
  • UI improvements - A general sweep of the UI tidying up.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Grey System Items - In previous versions System Items would appear slightly grey, instead of black when in the Bartender Bar, this has been fixed.
  • Bartender filesystem location limits - In previous versions of Bartender had to be in a location accessible by sandboxed apps, such as /Applications/ instead of say ~/Applications/ with this release this is no longer required and Bartender works from any location.
  • System Items not present on new OSX installs - On new installs of OSX, System Items would not be populated in Bartender Preferences until they were edited in System Preferences; this now works.
  • Dynamic System Items - Previously dynamic system items would not show in Bartender Preferences, they now show as expected.
  • Skype Support - With the latest update to Skype they included a security measure that unfortunately also prevented Bartender from working with it. We have found a way to still work with Skype.
  • LaunchBar Compatibility - Currently LaunchBar does not display a Menubar item that needs controlling as such we detect this and do not allow settings to be added for LaunchBar.
  • Using discrete graphics on late 2010 MBP's after 10.8.3 - Bartender should now not switch to discrete graphics.
  • SystemUIServer high CPU usage on rare occasions - For some users on rare occasions SystemUIServer would display high CPU usage, this is now fixed.
  • Tunnelbrick Compatibility - For some users TunnelBrick would create multiple menu bar items when used with Bartender, this is now fixed.
  • Custom Menu Bar Icon Image large in drop down in Preferences - Selecting a large image for the menu bar icon of Bartender would cause the drop down to display this image larger than other items, this is now fixed.

  • Popup Location - Additional work to improve the popup fix for some apps displaying their popup's in slightly the wrong location.
  • Non Responsive Menu Bar Apps - After restarting your system and having Bartender launch at login some apps in the menu bar could stop responding to clicks, and restarting Bartender would fix this. With this version this should no longer happen.
  • Bartender Bar position when switching Screens/Resolutions - The Bartender Bar would appear at different locations with different resolutions/screens. This has now been fixed.
  • Drag and Drop Support - Bartender should allow you to drag an item up to its icon and this will cause the Bartender Bar to display allowing you to drag things onto menu bar Items in the Bartender Bar, but this has not always worked on all users systems, we have been working on identifying the issue and this version should work for everyone.
  • Changing Spaces when in Fullscreen App - If you use Bartender to display the full menu bar or display items in the menu bar when in a fullscreen app, Bartender would cause you to switch to another space. This has now been modified so that we do not display the full menu bar when in a fullscreen app (as this would always cause a space change) but will show all menu bar items in the menu bar.
  • App compatibility improvements - Some apps did not work well with Bartender, work has been done to improve on this.

  • Code improvement and fixes:
  • Have been working extremely hard to polish up Bartender after releasing 1.0. In this version a lot of effort has been put into stabilizing everything and preventing rare issues.
  • Notification Center UI bug:
  • In the previous version, if you: Showed the Bartender Bar.
  • Displayed Notification Centre.
  • Closed the Bartender Bar and reopened it.
  • A visual bug appeared that all contained items did not shift with the Bartender Bar frame; this is now fixed.
  • Missing Icons:
  • Very rarely some users would have icons missing in the Bartender Bar, this should be fixed, we have not seen this issue here, so please do send feedback if you see this.
  • System Slowdown:
  • Again a very small number of users have reported slowing down of their system after extended periods. We have made many improvements to memory usage and performance to prevent this.
  • Crashes in other Apps controlled by Bartender:
  • OSX has a bug that would cause some apps controlled by Bartender to crash, this was a very rare issue but an unacceptable one. We have worked around the OSX bug and after a restart the issue should be gone.

  • New Features / Improvements:
  • Update to Test Build Option in Preferences
  • We have added an option for you to take our more frequent Test Builds, this will allow you (if you want) to test our latest improvements and fixes. Please do realize that these builds will likely contain bugs and may be unstable, and are not recommended for all users.
  • Any feedback you can provide about features/issues you have is always a great help.
  • Bug Fixes:
  • Menu Bar Items Reordering after restart / login or adding System Items
  • There was a bug that could cause items to reorder when you restart, login, or add System Items.
  • This has now been fixed.
  • We do have to do some cleanup of the menu bar order list to correct the bug, hence some items may change position initially with this version. Dragging them to their correct location should fix this.
  • Show Full Menu Bar not working for some users
  • Show full Menu Bar should clear the Menu Bar of any menu's to allow the maximum space for Menu Bar Items, this feature stopped working for some users in Lion and Mountain Lion after fixing a bug for Snow Leopard. This should now be working for all supported OS's and all users.

New in Bartender 1.0.4 Build 20 (Nov 12, 2012)

  • Menu Bar Items appearing on right instead of left of other Items:
  • With the introduction of the ability to organize menu bar items, new Menu Bar items started it the right most position. This has now been fixed so that they will load in the left most position as before.
  • Ordering items inconsistent:
  • When ordering items, some items would jump positions, we have done a lot of work on the rearranging code and it should now be a lot better.

  • Performance Improvements:

  • Missing Icons:
  • In previous versions it was possible for some items to not appear in the Bartender Bar, leaving blank spaces. This should be better.

  • On the previous versions Dropzone would not work with Bartender unless its settings were set each time Bartender started, also the icon for Dropzone could display above other windows, these are both now fixed.
  • Update causing issues with old version till restart:
  • We have improved the reliability of updates, working correctly when still interacting with the old version. But again if you get any strange behavior after updating, restarting your Mac, or logging out and back in should fix this.
  • High CPU Load:
  • It was possible for Bartender to cause high CPU load under some circumstances with earlier versions. This is now fixed.
