Media Composer Changelog

What's new in Media Composer 8.9.3

Jan 15, 2018
  • Mac OS Support:
  • This release includes support for Mac OS v10.13 Supplemental.
  • Effects Parameters Update:
  • With this release, the following effect parameters have extended their values to include a decimal to allow for better precision. You can manipulate the image in the viewer or type the value itself. Using the sliders or arrows keys will stop at integer values.
  • Move Clips Up and Down in the Timeline:
  • Two new commands allow you to easily move clips up and down the Timeline. The Move Clip Up and Move Clip Down buttons are on the Edit tab of the Command Palette.
  • The Move Clip Up and Move Clip Down keys are assigned to the up and down arrows of the default keyboard settings. (This replaces the Previous in Group and Next in Group buttons. Use Shift + up and down arrows for Previous in Group and Next in Group.)
  • Setting:
  • A new setting has been added to the Effect Editor that allows you to disable the Color Info Tool from automatically launching when you access a color picker.
  • Dynamic Shuttle:
  • With this release, you can use the Dynamic Play Forward and Dynamic Play Reverse buttons to adjust play speeds at smaller increments than with the usual J and L keys. These buttons are in the Play tab of the Command Palette. Dynamic Play Forward and Dynamic Play Reverse are offered as alternatives to using J and L.
  • You can map these buttons to your keyboard. If you like the smaller increment play speeds, you can map these buttons to your J and L keys.
  • Audio Pitch Correction During Shuttle:
  • This release includes an Audio Pitch Correction option. Go to the Audio Settings in the Project window. If Pitch Correction during Shuttle is enabled, when you shuttle at speeds above sound speed, a pitch shift is applied to restore original pitch.
  • Color Correction Presets:
  • A number of color correction presets have been added to the effects library. The effects library contains several color correction preset effects that you can apply directly to clips in a sequence. Click the effects icon in the Project window to access the list of presets.
  • Adjusting FrameFlex Parameters:
  • With this release, using the Shift key while adjusting the X, Y and Z Rotation framing parameters allows for a more controlled adjustment.
  • Tool Palette Update:
  • This release includes changes to accessing the Tool Palette. The Composer window Fast Menu that had previously displayed the Tool Palette has been replaced with a new Tool Palette button. And the Project window Settings tab includes Tool Palette settings allowing you to have customize versions of the Tool Palette.
  • Motion Adapters and Source Settings Support for Matte Key Effects:
  • In previous releases, Motion Adapter effects were not applied to clips with Matte Key effects. With this release, Matte Keys support Motion Adapters. Adapters are applied to both the graphic fill and alpha sub tracks.
  • Relinking Across Frame Rates:
  • With this release, you can relink across different frame rates. A new option has been added to the Relink dialog box that allows you to relink to clips across different frame rates. This option is enabled by default. Access the Relink dialog box by right-clicking on a selected clip.
  • Audio Mix Tool Settings Update:
  • In a previous release, you could choose to set the display of the Audio Mixer Tool in either an expanded or narrow view by right clicking in the tool and selecting Set Display Options. With this release, you can create user settings for displaying the Audio Mix Tool.
  • Improvements Working with .mov and .mp4 Media:
  • Avid has made the following improvements when working with .mov and .mp4 media:
  • (MCDEV-7229) Previously, the editing application did not retain the image orientation of some .mov and .mp4 media. The image orientation is now properly applied by the editing application.
  • (LEPO-4020) Avid continues working to remove dependencies on QuickTime libraries. With this release, Avid has improved using the Avid Generic plug-in with H.264 variable frame rate media.
  • Displaying Faster Thumbnails:
  • While in Script View or Frame View, the thumbnails might not display clearly. This is because the application prioritizes displaying the thumbnails faster rather than having the best resolution for the thumbnails. The option, “Faster thumbnails” in the Bin menu is enabled by default. For bins with a lot of thumbnails, it is best to leave this option enabled. If you prefer better resolution for the thumbnails displayed in a bin, deselect Faster thumbnails from the Bin menu. This option only applies to the currently selected Bin.
  • New Features;

  • Dynamic Play Forward and Dynamic Play Reverse buttons allow you to adjust play speeds at smaller increments.
  • You can apply a pitch shift when you shuttle at speeds above sound speed.
  • A number of color correction presets have been added to the effects library.
  • You can use the Shift key while adjusting the X, Y and Z Rotation framing parameters to have a more controlled adjustment.
  • Use the new Tool Palette button for easy access to the Tool Palette.
  • Motion adapter effects can be applied to Matte Keys
  • You can choose to relink across frame rates.
  • You can create user settings for displaying the Audio Mix Tool.
  • Avid continues to improve working with .mov and .mp4 media.

New in Media Composer 8.9.0 (Aug 9, 2017)

  • Create a QuickTime Export with Multiple Discrete Audio Tracks:
  • In previous releases, you could not create a Custom QuickTime export movie with multiple discrete audio tracks. With this release, you can create a Custom QuickTime Export by enabling Direct Out under the Audio Format tab. The exported .mov file will include discrete audio tracks. (The export actually uses Same as Source for the audio.) When you select Direct Out audio in the Custom QuickTime Export settings, you will receive the following message when you choose to export.
  • Avid Generic Plug-In:
  • Avid continues working to remove dependencies on QuickTime libraries. With this release, the Avid Generic plug-in natively supports the following format for linking and playing.
  • Support for Sony XAVC-Long G 1080p50:
  • This release of the Avid editing application now supports the Sony XAVC-Long G format in the 1080p50 project type. Media Creation options will only be available in the 50mb codec (AVC Long GOP 50). You must have the latest Sony plug-in installed to Link to Sony XAVC-L 1080p 50.
  • Performing Audio Slip:
  • New audio Source Settings allow you to perform sub-frame slip on audio sources. This allows you to perform a more precise audio sync.
  • Collapse and Expand Source Browser:
  • An expand and collapse button has been added to the media display area of the Source Browser. If you have a large number of clips to display in the Source Browser, you can click the Collapse and Expand button to view more clips.
  • Viewing Larger Thumbnails in the Source Browser:
  • You can view larger thumbnails in the Source Browser in Frame View.
  • Source/Record Highlight Colors:
  • Two new options have been added to the Interface Settings. You can choose to
  • turn on colors for the Source and Record monitor timelines and for the track enable buttons in the Timeline. Displaying the colors (green/blue) for the Source and Record monitors is very useful if you are using a single monitor Composer Window.
  • Automatically Opening Effect Editor:
  • A new Timeline setting allows you to set the Effect Editor to automatically open when you apply an effect.
  • Color Correction Mode Pre-roll and Post-roll Playback:
  • When you are in Color Correction mode, you can use the Segment Preview button to play a number of seconds of the previous clip and a number of seconds of the next clip. This allows you to see the colors in context of the scene. The default for the Pre-roll and Post-roll is 3 seconds.
  • Color Correction Update:
  • The following are new when in Color Correction Mode:
  • Dual Split mode remains active during playback.
  • Scopes now update in real-time as you change the Color Correction pa
  • rameters when grading your clips.

  • An additional option has been added to the Timeline Settings. When this option is selected, clicking the position indicator will snap to the nearest event, such as IN and OUT points, markers, and segment start and end points.
  • Audio Mixer Narrow Display Option:
  • The Audio Mixer tool has been redesigned to use less space on your screen. The Audio Mixer is now approximately 35 to 45% thinner depending upon the tracks selected. This can be helpful when working with multiple windows open or when working on a laptop. The narrow display of the Audio Mixer tool is on by default.
  • Support for HiRes Monitors:
  • This release provides support for HiRes or HiDPI monitors. We currently support setting your monitor scaling to 200%.

  • New Custom Safe Action and Safe Title Options:
  • In the Grid Settings dialog, it is now possible to set Width and Height values for Custom Safe Action % and Safe Title %. You can use the Safe Title and Safe Action options to provide visual guidelines in the Effect Preview monitor. See “Grid Settin
  • gs” and “Displaying Safe Title and Safe Action Guidelines” in the Help.

New in Media Composer 8.7.0 (Dec 16, 2016)

  • LIST TOOL UPDATE:
  • With this release, you can create a cut list or change list for multiple sequences.
  • CREATING A CUT LIST FOR MULTIPLE SEQUENCES:
  • With two or more sequences loaded, the system generates on list with appended sections for all sequences in their listed order.
  • CREATING CHANGE LISTS ACROSS MULTIPLE REELS:
  • When you load comparable sequences, consecutive, appended lists for each set of cuts is created. You can make comparisons based on reel numbers.
  • Depending on the options you select, the new list notes any of the standard change categories across the reels:
  • Insertions of new material
  • Deletions of material no longer needed
  • Trims to be made to the heads and tails of the edits
  • Moves that consist of a matched pair of deletions and insertions
  • Optional information that details which portions of the sequence should not be altered
  • In addition, you can generate separate lists for each set of reels and simultaneously generate a single dupe list that describes duplicated shots across all the reels.
  • USING REEL NUMBERS:
  • When you use reel numbers to generate change lists for multiple reels, observe the following conditions:
  • For each sequence, the old version and the new version must have exactly the same reel number in order for the system to make the appropriate comparisons.
  • The reel numbers must be typed into the Reel # column in the bin for each sequence.
  • The reel numbers must be consecutive so that the system can generate lists that match the appropriate order of the reels; for example, sequence 1.1, sequence 1.2, and so on.
  • You must have an equal number of old and new sequences. If necessary, create a dummy sequence to balance the reels.
  • EXTENDED AUDIO PUNCH-IN:
  • You can extend Audio Punch-In beyond the end of the sequence or the Mark Out.
  • DUPE DETECTION FOR AUDIO AND DATA TRACKS:
  • The Dupe Detection feature lets you visually track duplicate frames of audio and data tracks. (Previously, Dupe Detection applied to Video tracks only.)
  • SUPPORT FOR SONY XAVC-LONGG FORMAT:
  • This release of the Avid editing application supports the Sony XAVC-LongG format. The formats listed below are available for media creation and linking.
  • NEW SAFE AREA AND SAFE TITLE OPTIONS:
  • In the Grid Settings dialog, it is now possible to set the Safe Area/Title to RP-2046 (safe area 93%, safe title 90%) and EBU R95 (safe area 96.5%, safe title 95%) standards.
  • ROTATION PRESETS IN FRAMEFLEX:
  • The Source Settings FrameFlex tab includes rotate left and rotate right buttons to help you when adjusting the Framing parameters when you are setting new dimensions of the framing box.
  • HYBRID LOG GAMMA COLOR SPACE:

  • This name change is valid across the application. This change is seen in the color space selection as well as color transformations in the Source Settings.
  • CONTROLLING THE TRACK SHOWN IN SPLIT VIEW:
  • A new setting to the Composer Settings window in the Multicam tab allows you to control which track is shown in the split view when you press Play. You can choose between V1 or the monitored track.
  • TIMECODE BURN-IN EFFECT LOCAL FRAME COUNT:
  • In a previous release, the editing application allowed you to set the starting frame count at 1. With this release, you can set the starting frame count at any value. This value will also be reflected in the Frame Count Start bin column entry.
  • AUDIO DEFAULT PAN UPDATE:
  • This update provides two new menu items in the Clip mode of the Audio Mixer tool that allow you to commit and remove pan effects whose values are the same as the default for their respective tracks.
  • For example, if your Audio Settings has the Default Pan set to Centered, and you select Commit Default Clip Pan on Track in the Audio Mixer Tool, the clips containing pan in your sequence will stay centered, even if the default is subsequently changed in the Audio Settings window. The Remove Default Clip Pan on Track option removes the pan effect from any clip whose pan value is the same as the current default. If you remove the pan effects from these clips, changing the default will cause the pan on the clips to change.
  • CLIP INFO SHORTCUT:
  • The Clip Info shortcut Alt+Ctrl+I (Windows) or Option+Command+I (Mac) has been added to the editing application. Select the clip or multiple clips in the bin and press Alt+Ctrl+I (Windows) or Option+Command+I (Mac). The clip(s) information appears in the Console window. This is helpful if you want to copy a text version of the clip information.
  • MATCHFRAMING TO TITLES AND MATTE KEYS:
  • With this release of the editing application, when editing a title or matte key into a sequence, the sequence will track the original clip used so that it can be match framed. This applies to newly edited Titles or Matte keys (Media Composer v8.7 or later.) If you edit a title in a sequence or recreate title media, Match Frame will take you to the newly created title clip from that operation.

  • This release includes support for Italian and Spanish. If you change your system locale to one of these languages, once you restart your system, the User Interface for the Media Composer will appear in that language.
  • Hybrid Log Gamma Preset:
  • The editing application includes a waveform scope preset for Hybrid Log Gamma project types. The waveform scope preset appears when working in a Hybrid Log Gamma (ARIB STD-B67) color space. It shows relative luminance values ranging from 0 to 12 (a signal at value 12 will be twelve times brighter than one at value 1) on an HDR monitor.
  • Bug fixes:

New in Media Composer 8.5.0 (Jan 29, 2016)

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) Support:
  • Media Composer now includes color spaces for High Dynamic Range (HDR). Enhance color and contrast to achieve more realistic, dramatic imagery, with exceptional detail in the shadows and highlights, and get support for Dolby Vision, Sony S-Log3, BBC/NHK, and ACES profiles. If you are working in an HD project, Avid recommends using DNxHD444 and HQX because of their 10 bit resolution. For higher than HD, use DNxHR444 and DNxHQX which are 12 bit resolutions.
  • Menu Simplification:
  • A lot of the menu items in Media Composer have been reorganized. They now are grouped in a more logical location. Note that the Bin, Timeline and Composer context and Fast menus have also been reorganized.
  • A handy table in the What’s New Guide lists the main menu items that have moved, where they appeared in previous releases, and where you can find them now.
  • High-Visibility Timeline Editing:
  • With this release, you can clearly see the segments as you drag them in either trim or segment mode. As you drag a clip, the movement is transparent allowing you to see other elements in the Timeline. If waveforms are turned on, the waveform stays visible as you drag, making it a lot easier to line up clips as you are editing.
  • Adding Tracks in the Timeline:
  • Now you can add a track by simply dragging a clip in your timeline. As you drag the clip vertically up or down the timeline, and let go of the clip, a new track is added. Note that you can only create as many tracks at the same time as you are dragging.
  • Trimming with Sync Locks On:
  • A new feature allows you to enable Sync Rollers for Sync Locked Tracks. In previous releases, you had to wait for the trim to end to see how sync was maintained. With this release, when you enter single roller trim, each track gets either a gray roller or a dimmer yellow roller. The gray roller appears when there is a segment directly under the selected roller. The dimmer yellow one will appear on the left side of the next segment when there is filler underneath the selected roller.
  • Changes in Trimming Clips:
  • Media Composer now has new ‘end of trim’ indicators that show you whether the trim ends because there’s no more media or whether you’re running into the next cut. These new indicators instantly show you what track or cut point will be your stopping point if you were to continue trimming.
  • It also shows tick marks when trimming. This is useful when slipping clips, to show the movement of the actual trimmed segment.
  • Adding Custom Columns and Multiple Columns to a Bin:
  • In addition to the standard column headings, you can now add your own column headings to describe information about clips and sequences.
  • Also, if you select multiple columns to add to the bin, they will appear directly to the right of the selected column. If you do not select a column, the new columns will be placed at the far right of the bin.
  • Effect Palette Update:
  • Effect Palette has been improved to allow you to find and filter effects quickly and easily. Effects are now divided into two categories for video (Filters and Transitions) and two categories for audio (Clip Effects and Track Effects). A Quick Find field has been added, allowing you to search for a specific effect.
  • Identifying Rendered Effects:
  • Now you can easily identify rendered effects media. The Media Tool includes the option to see rendered effect precompute clips separately from Titles and Matte Key precompute clips. This will make it easier to delete the rendered effects media. You can also choose to display the rendered effect precompute clips separately in the bin by choosing that option in the Set Bin Display.
  • FrameFlex Rotation:
  • If you need to straighten or rotate your source image, you can now rotate the framing box in the FrameFlex source settings using the Z Rotation slider. Once on the Timeline, these adjustments can also be animated with the Effect Editor. All settings are saved with the clip metadata which can be exported to other applications.
  • Video Memory and Video Frame Cache:
  • All played frames—and all effects applied to those clips—are now cached in RAM. A new Video Memory tab has been added to the Media Cache Settings. Here you can allocate video memory for the editing application. You can also turn on interactive video frame cache. This saves the need to regenerate each frame every time it is needed during subsequent playback of the sequence. Enabling this cache will result in faster response times while editing.
  • Audio Mixer Tool Changes:
  • The Audio Mixer now includes triangular openers that allow you to control what parameters are displayed in the Audio Mixer Tool. Clicking the top expand/collapse triangle opens the track selector sidebar where you can select the tracks you want to display in the Audio Mixer tool.
  • Click the first column heading to sort the tracks according to which are enabled. Click the # column to sort by track numbers. Click the Track column to sort by track label (if applicable).
  • MORE NEW FEATURES IN MEDIA COMPOSER:
  • Support for Windows 10 and OS X El Capitan
  • Now you can use Media Composer on OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and Windows 10 operating systems.
  • 64 Tracks of Audio:
  • With this release, you can have 64 tracks of audio in a single sequence, meaning 250% more audio tracks than previously available! Bear in mind that you are limited to 64 voices.
  • Opening a Settings Dialog in the Project Window:
  • You no longer have to use the mouse in the Settings tab to open a setting’s dialog box. Type the first letter of the setting you want to open, scroll to the setting and press Enter to open the applicable Settings dialog.
  • Manage Preset Project Formats:
  • Custom raster dimensions that you have added to your project formats can now be modified or deleted. To modify your presets, click the Manage Presets button in the Project dialog box. In the preset manager, select a preset and overwrite any of the existing values. You can also add or delete presets from this dialog.
  • Changing the Background Color of the Project Window or Timeline:
  • In the Settings tab of the Project Window, open the Interface Settings. If you want to change the background of the Timeline, select Use custom Timeline background and choose a new color. If you want to change the background of the Project window, select Use custom Project background and choose a color.
  • Overriding Bin and Project Font and Font Size:
  • Now you can easily override the bin, project font and font sizes fonts for all bins and/or projects through the Interface Setting. This is useful if you share projects and bins with other users or if you are switching between systems. The font and font size you want to see on a desktop might be different than the one you want to see on a laptop.
  • Grouping Clips by Audio Waveform Analysis
  • Apart from grouping clips by IN points, OUT points, or timecode, with this release, you can also group clips by audio waveform analysis. Media Composer performs an analysis of the waveforms of the selected clips and creates a group clip for you.
  • Timecode Burn-In Effect Update:
  • In previous releases, the Timecode Burn-In effect would always count from frame 0. Now, the Burn-In effect provides the option to set the starting frame count at 1. You can also display a frame count for the effect in feet and frames (35mm 4perf).
  • Applying the Same Text to Multiple Column Items:
  • Select the items in the bin to which you want to apply the same text. Right+click the column and select Set column for selected clips. Enter the text you want to appear in the column for the selected items in the bin.
  • Linking and Importing Broadcast Wave Files:
  • Importing and linking Broadcast Wave files has changed with this release. The change ensures the beginning of an imported or linked audio clip is not cut off at the beginning of the clip.
  • Audio Track Ordering Layout Name Change:
  • A new 7.1 track ordering layout is included with this release. This change supports interoperability with Pro Tools. For 7.1 EXT the order is: Left, Right, Center, Low Frequency Enhancement, Left Rear, Right Rear, Left Side Center, Right Side Center. For SMPTE-DS (per the SMPTE Standard 428), the order is: Left, Right, Center, Low Frequency Enhancement, Left Side Center, Right Side Center, Left Rear, Right Rear.
