TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a

bitmapped graphics file format created Aldus, jointly with Microsoft, to be used with PostScript printing. The TIFF format handles monochrome, gray scale, 8-bit and 24-bit color

TIFF serves as a wrapper for a number of bitstream encodings for bit-mapped (raster) image files. The different encodings may represent different compression schemes and different schemes for color representation (photometric interpretation).

Most TIFF viewers will allow their users to rotate their images and to resize them according to one's preferences.

Also, this type of application will also offer its users the possibility to export the TIFF images to other formats that can be later edited using other utilities.
