Trojanss are a distinct type of malicious software, and they function as the trojan horse of the Greek mythology: they get copied on a computer, then automatically create an access point to an external server.
There are several ways of getting a trojan on your Mac: as part of a downloaded app, from an infected website or through an email attachment.
A trojan allows its creator to use an infected Mac as if it was its owner, therefore allowing actions such as keystroke logging and desktop monitoring, screen locking, file accessing or even crashing the operating system.
Most available security solutions now provide trojan detection and automatic removal, but the downside is that it is hard to detect all damages a trojan has caused since it got installed.
