    MPEG is a multimedia format that comes with support for lossy compression of both video and audio files. MPEG is also the most widely compatible multimedia lossy format, so that music videos and movie trailers distributed over the Internet are MPEG files.

    The advantage of the MPEG multimedia format is that the compressed MPEG files still preserve the quality of the initially uncompressed files.

    By default, MPEG playing apps will only allow their users to open and view/listen their MPEG multimedia files without any editing capabilities.
