AMR (standing for Adaptive Multi-Rate) is an audio codec developed by Ericsson and a patented compression format for speech coding.

AMR is ususally used by 3G mobile phones for audio recordings since it features a built-in ACELP algorithm that comes with extended support for efficient human speech compression.

These days there are numerous cell phones that can record short audio tracks using the AMR format, therefore AMR support is now also included in multimedia players available for Macs.

AMR playing apps may also be used to create extensive playlists that can store a wide range of formats, besides AMR files.
