TAR (short for tarball) is a data compression format used to represent a special type of archive initially created and used on Unix platforms.

TAR is currently used to store several files into a single large file to facilitate easier distribution and archiving, without losing information like group and user permissions or directory structures.

To be able to create a TAR archive, users will have to find and use a specialized application capable of using the TAR compression algorithm.

Some TAR-compatible archiving apps will also offer their users the option to protect their files with passwords.
