This type of online chat is based on the existence of previous user lists, also known as contact or buddy lists.

Some IM clients will also allow their users to start video conferences or to send audio messages.

Most instant messengers may also be used for file transfer or photo sharing, provided that both the sender and the recipient use the same app.
