Encrypt File Apps and Alternatives

File encryption is the process of transforming data using a special algorithm and making it readable only for the user(s) knowing the key needed to decrypt that data.

Encryption apps feature a very wide variety of algorithms that can be used to encrypt one's files: Blowfish, Rijndael, Twofish, Serpent, RC6, etc.

File encryption (also known as filesystem-level encryption) also has its disadvantages and the most important one is the lack of metadata.

This means that timestamps or directory structure might be sometimes lost if the user does not choose an appropriate encryption algorithm.
